The main seating area is in the basement and is very cosy (and usually quite full!) with an old bread oven at the rear of the room. As you would expect, you can have many kinds of tea and coffee here - all very good. There are also tasty cakes and homemade soups. On a sunny day you can sit outside as there are a few tables set out on the pavement. On the ground floor is a shop area selling all things tea and coffee. This is also pleasingly old-fashioned with lots of dark wood and decorative old tins storing different varieties of tea.

I'm not sure whether it's just that FHK is a new venue, or that it was mid-afternoon on a Monday, but either way the place was quiet. Upside? We got a table immediately and there wasn't a queue for food. The first thing I noticed whilst going up to order food is that there's a good range of teas and coffees available on display by the counter, presumably for you to select from if you wish. I didn't; I ordered a standard issue cappuccino for me, and the g/f wanted a latte. Both drinks came in decent sized cups, and my cappuccino was great. Good ratio of coffee-milk-foam, and a caramelised biscuit on the side to boot. On the food front, I ordered a croque monsieur and the lady opted for a sandwich called "Get your goat, you've pulled" which was a goats cheese and salad toasted sandwich. Both sandwiches came with a little bowl of side salad, which was average (bit too heavy on cucumber for my taste, as I don't like it) but that wasn't the main attraction. The croque monsieur was great. Cheesy, crunchy toasted bread, with a good amount of ham and a fried egg melting through the sandwich; it was just the pick-me-up I needed after a fair bit of walking about Kendal. T'other half seemed equally happy with her choice of sandwich. At just shy of £20 for both of us, it wasn't the cheapest, but for somewhere using artisan and local produce that's not too bad. Overall, for a new place on the block, I'd say they're off to a good start. I'll definitely be back in again in future.

This is especially true of Costa in Kendal. The ill-designed room means tables are few and cramped, and rarely as clean as you would expect. I have often found the staff to be impatient, and frequently have to clear my own table due to their indifference. You may ask why I have been more than once, and this is because my mother is a fan. Perhaps as a coffee hater I am not the right person to review such a place. Perhaps the drinks aren't outrageously overpriced as I suspect, and the quality of the beans makes up for the otherwise unpleasant experience. Perhaps. But I doubt it. I have awarded two stars because I must admit that I like their desserts. But do yourself a favour and get one to take away. A nearby bench is likely to be more peaceful and relaxing than this place, and you'll save yourself 30p an item by avoiding it.
