I'll explain why and try to be concise. The cuisine is exceptional. There's a good selection of quality drinks. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming -- the sort of place where complete strangers tend to strike-up conversation. The location is perfect, overlooking the Village Green, with a big beer garden behind, and a vast playing field behind that. It's a lovely village, nestled in the gently-undulating farming landscape of rural north-east Herts -- no wonder Braughing was recently awarded the prestigious "Village of the Year" accolade. The pub's menu always includes the best of local produce, from locally-reared beef to local pork sausages, alongside popular country pub dishes. (Braughing village is famous for, among other things, the delicious local sausages, and this is a good place to sample them.) Did I mention the pies? A different pie every day it seems, and you won't find better pies than these. I don't make a statement like that lightly.

The pub has decent traditional ales, and the wine list is good. It has about a dozen each of whites and reds, a couple of rose wines from around £12 to £37. There are about eight champagnes from around £18 to £100. Most people don't come here to drink, they come to eat, and the menu is varied with more fish dishes available on Friday. Starters range from around £5 to £7, mains £12 to £17, deserts about £5 to £7. We had homemade fish cakes with Salad and Homemade Tartare Sauce for £6.90 which were excellent and Gravadlax with Smoked Salmon Pate, Toast & Cress Salad which was the same price and tasty, but a little too oily for my taste, it would have benefitted from a good-sized wedge of lemon. We followed this by Roast Aylesbury Duck Breast, Confit Leg with Gratin Potato, Plum & Ginger Compote for £14.95 and Roast Local Rare Breed Lamb with Crushed Jerseys Royals, Marsh Samphire & Tomato: both were excellent and very tasty. After 50 minutes our meals arrived and although the meals were ok in regards to taste, they were all only luke warm at best. We were offered the desert menu and all ordered the recommended one on the menu, I'm afraid it was bland and yet another disappointment. Our spoons were delivered by the server, all held by their heads in her hands. The pub itself is cosy and had a lovely log burner but I'm afraid the service and food were a real disappointment. The food has a real chance of being so much better if only served hot and accompanied by a much better service experience.

Main coarses are about £11.50, which I consider fantastic value. The menu isn't extensive, but included a reasonable selection of pub-style food. We tried the home-made burger in a bun which was excellent and an up-market fish fingers sandwich which was OK. Both came with home-made chips which were nice. Unusually for a lunch time we decided to try the suites because they looked rather nice: we shared a sticky-toffee pudding with custard, which was very good. They have a normal selection of draft beers and spirits, and a small private car park. Definitely worth a look, we'll be back.

The current owners have however done a fantastic job transforming what once used to be a reasonably run down pub selling drinks only into a great little gastro pub. The place is small and cozy with all sorts of little nooks and crannies but it has been sympathetically modernised, has a small selection of Tap drinks, and has regularly changing guest ale. The proprietors are very accommodating and take great care in delivering a suitable meal when I visited with a guest who is a celiac.
