The food is always cooked well and is obviously freshly cooked when you order as it's piping hot and very well presented. They serve a range of real ales as well as the more usual lagers and other drinks choices. It has a lovely atmosphere inside and because children are welcome it's a great place to bring the family, there is a fairly large open fire so do take care to watch the children when you visit but otherwise this is a really nice place to have a drink and something to eat. The decor inside is lovely and puts me in mind of an older pub, which considering this is a 15th century building isn't hard to imagine. I felt really at home when I visited and thought the staff were absolutely lovely, it was quite quiet when I visited and the lady behind the bar was chatty and told me some interesting facts about the area and seemed to know exactly what was what around Stowmarket.

During the week the emphasis is more on the restaurant side, but during the weekends the place is hopping! The food is the best i have had in stowmarket and i would recommend it to anyone. Its not just the quality, but also the flavours that you notice. Everything is cooked to perfection and comes out quickly and is always hot. I noticed that theyhave regular Karaoke nights on there, and coming up the have a Michael Buble tribute artist on as well. In recent years, various members of my family have moved to the Stour valley area and so I was very excited to finally have the opportunity to go here, having just re-read the book to my own sons. The Butt and Oyster certainly lived up to my expectations. Although, like many country pubs have become over the past ten years, it's really more like a restaurant with beer, the interior is still clearly old, with terrific character. Its situation in the village of Pinmill is everything you could wish for as a Ransome fan, with a host of boats new and old lining the 'Hard', a scattering of well-preserved cottages and sailboats drifting by on the Orwell. The food here was very tasty with some local themes - seafood in particular. I had a delicious Lowestoft skate with capers and roasted tomatoes. Plus, they sell Adnams ales which instantly gives it at least four stars on my scale. A couple of pints of Broadside washed the food down a treat. After lunch we also had a great walk through meadows upstream along the river. A real English country experience that feels like it hasn't changed much since Ransome's day. The staff are always friendly, professional and helpful. The food is always amazing quality from rolls at lunch to the best chicken pie in the evening. We turned up without a booking just wanting a summer time drink but when we asked if we could possibly have a table they managed to fit us in. During lockdown we visited several times.
