The drinks a very reasonably priced and the 2 for 1 offer on Cocktails between 10 and 11pm is a favourite of mine. The Strawberry Daquiri cocktail is lush. The staff are friendly and hard working. My dad chose the black pudding brunch which includes black pudding bread (!), bacon, egg and mushroom. He really enjoyed it but wondered why there was a drizzle of honey mustard dressing across the plate, which didn't really mesh with the flavours or add anything. He thought that a drizzle of brown sauce would have been excellent though. I chose the rarebit which comes as a meal with a choice of salad (which I think changes daily but on this occasion included a pasta salad, a cous cous salad, a Greek-style salad with feta and olives, or a simple green salad) or on its own. I got it by itself and it came with a pot of chutney and a small dressed side salad. It was really tasty, indulgent without being too heavy and rich. The chutney was slightly spicy which cut through the cheesiness very well. We all ended up having a cake - my mum had carrot cake with Mascarpone, my dad had a bakewell tart, and I had a ginger, stout and dried apple cake. My cake was really good and I was even offered fresh cream with it which I obviously couldn't turn down. Carrot cake was also really good. The bakewell tart was a bit disappointing, very hard to cut into, and oddly out of three tarts in the cabinet only two had flaked almonds on top and my dad ended up being brought the one without any. Overall Clervaux is a great option if you're in the area.

There are lots of Cafes and Coffee shops in Darlington, from greasy spoon cafes, to those that…read moremainly focus on coffee and just happen to sell food as well. Cafe Valente is a proper small cafe located in Post House Wynd. They bake homemade pies such as their corned beef and potato pie and their homemade steak and ale pie which is packed with LEAN tender pieces of steak (yummy!) Their 'Smokey Joe' sandwich which can be ordered on either white or wholemeal bread is lovely, fresh pieces of chicken breast, basil mayo and smoked bacon absolutely packed into the bread makes for a very tasty treat indeed. On my last visit I thought I'd try their 'Wallace and Grommit' sandwich on wholemeal bread (this was made with grated Wensleydale cheese and mango chutney and some salad, I can't remember the exact ingredients, but needless to say this was also a great sandwich). Both tea and coffee has been good when we've visited and the staff are really friendly. I obviously wouldn't compare any small cafe to a restaurant, so my rating is based on cafes only and nothing else, great place to stop for a spot of lunch although it can get really busy at lunchtime, which I guess is a testimony in itself.
