Well, this is a bit out of my local area, but thought it worthy of a review.
Took the BF to Barnard Castle for the weekend as a 30th birthday treat, and thought I'd book us into a restaurant for the evening. After having a look around Trip Advisor, I settled on Blagraves House as the reviews seemed pretty good.
I was really, really impressed with this little place, and for me it definitely earned those 5 stars.
First of all was the building, which is 15th century and reminded us a little of something from the Harry Potter films, with lots of character. The history of the place is amazing - though I won't go into it here as there's just far too much! Just have a Google if you fancy it.
The welcome we received was really warm and genuine, the two waitresses were very friendly, very helpful, and always on hand if you needed something. We went on a Saturday so chose from the a la carte menu (it's a set menu on weekdays). I went for a seafood casserole with coriander and chilli for starter, and roast chicken breast stuffed with rosemary and goats cheese for main. The BF went for a crab and lobster tart with thermidor sauce to start, and fillet of beef for main.
The starters were each perfect. My seafood casserole contained chunks of salmon, sea bass and cod, and some large juicy king prawns. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the casserole had a wonderful thai taste to it. I tried a bit of the lobster and crab tart and it was delicious - big chunks of meat, the pastry was perfectly done, and the sauce was gorgeous.
The mains were heavenly. My chicken was lovely and moist, perfectly cooked through, and went really well with the goats cheese stuffing. The fillet beef was cooked exactly as the BF ordered (rare), and was so full of flavour. The mains came with a dish of seasonal veg which were also perfectly cooked - just al dente and nicely seasoned. We also got a dish of dauphinoise potatoes which were delightful.
Despite being stuffed to the gills, we went for a dessert each too. I had an absolutely gorgeous chocolate torte, and the BF went for a scrumptious sticky toffee pudding. Both were absolutely divine.
All in all, I'd happily say it was one of the best meals I've ever had, in one of the most unique restaurants I've ever been to. read more
