As of this month I tried to repay The Standard due to my unintentional overpayment. I made no less than 12 phone calls with 7 different representatives over 3 days. Only upon the third day did the representative inform me that I couldn't make a payment online nor over the phone. Instead, they require a draconian method of sending in a money order or check, via snail mail. This is unreasonable requirement on behalf of this company, effort and time is precious. I'm confident this is to maximize profit at the expense of claimants. I wish this monopoly that is The Standard, fails as a business. I rolled over a 403(b) account from them to another firm and had the worse customer service in trying to get the money issued to the right place and they charged me $60 to do it. Before that, the 403(b) was charged fees periodically and I don't know to this day what they did to earn it. They put in a minimal of effort. We've had a very frustrating experience working with The Standard for our company's 401(k) plan. They incorrectly changed employee 401(k) loan monthly payment amounts and end dates, and it took them a long time to fix the issue. Even after "resolving" it, they claimed the change was due to their system functioning differently than what was explained during the sales process--something that should have been made clear upfront. On top of that, they made errors in reporting when we implemented the required 3% contribution for employees who were not contributing. Mistakes like these create unnecessary and extra work for us. Their communication has also been lacking. Much of it is handled through regular mail instead of email. This has caused delays and confusion. Overall, The Standard has not been reliable or transparent. If you're considering them for retirement plan administration, I would strongly recommend looking at other providers who are more accurate, responsive, and upfront about how their systems actually work. read more

I started a long-term disability claim back in January 21st and here it is March 15th and I still have not received any payment. I called and asked if there was anything else they needed from me to complete the process, and their reply was that they had everything they needed to make a decision on my claim. Had 2 accounts on indexed annuities with the Standard since 2019. That were so quick to throw out that 5% rate. Here's the catch ,that's a teaser rate. If on the anniversary date of of opening your account, it's tied to the closing of the S&P 500. The market can do good all year but if it tanks on the anniversary date, you get $0. Then to add insult to injury, they start dropping your rate at will. Mine went 5,4.5,4, 3.5% in a 5 year contract. Also on 2 of the anniversary dates market was down. So on 2 years I had $150,000 that I didn't get a penny of interest Then when you contract runs out and you try to do a transfer it's one form after another they want,even a letter of acceptance from the company you are doing a roll over to. The reps you get are in Vietnam, when you ask to speak to someone in distribution, they always give you a reason not to connect you. It took me from June 26 to July 27 to get a distribution rep. I got on phone at 9 am and refused to hang up until I got a rep to do transfer, I was hung up by the Vietnam reps 3 times, finally after 7 continual hours the 5th rep transferred me to a US rep in distribution, within a few days she put check overnight with FedEx to the financial institution I wanted it to go to. Never again will I use the Standard. My fiduciary runs a wealth management company, he had made 3 calls spending hours trying to get this done for me. He has 200 agents and said he will never use the Standard again read more

Spent several months trying to deposit rollover funds into my 401k and Roth with them. We repeatedly went back and forth on what additional information they needed to deposit checks. They would tell me they had the information necessary to complete, then when I followed up, they would tack on additional information that they were missing. This building is home to basically Stoel Rives law firm and a few other offices. It's got a classic old-school look on the outside, but actually features some pretty decent amenities on the inside that make it an ok building to work in. First off, the elevators have a cool pre-programmed system where you enter your destination floor in the lobby and the system tells you which elevator to get in, and then you are whisked to your floor. No buttons in the elevator. You kind of feel out of control, but there's no chance of others changing their minds mid trip and pressing all these extra floor buttons. And it seems futuristic. Which is kinda cool. They also have a little elevated eating/smoking area on the mezzanine floor our back (on the river side), which is a crafty escape from the bustle of the sidewalk a mere floor below. A decent place to dine on a nice day. Finally, they have Outtakes in the basement, which is more a cafeteria than anything else, but can come in handy when you want a simple, reasonably priced meal for breakfast or lunch. When I used to work in the Fox Tower, I was stuck with Elephants, which is tasty but incredibly expensive, or I had to leave the building. This option was always a nice one to have. Overall, while it's not the tallest, newest, fanciest building in town, it does the trick, and the location is pretty great too. read more

I wanted to continue my life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance with them after leaving my job, and they made it hard to do, and I missed the deadline for their premium. They sent a letter out about the premium dated two weeks before the due date. They never told me about this premium in any other way, even when I called them to ask about my application. They just told me to wait for the decision, and I got a bad feeling about it when I called to talk to them. Now I'm glad that they did not accept my application, because I don't think they are a good company to use for my insurace. read more

I would not recommend this company to anyone. And if any company told me they used this company for any insurance products I would tell them to find someone else. They are slow and inconsiderate. Will have people jump through way too many hoops to file claims. My wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer. All the Doctors would say that her condition is permanent and there is no cure for her cancer. The Doctors would say that my wife wouldn't be able to work. Yet, every six months The Standard wanted a physicians statement. Then you get the right info to them and they want more info. Usually it was because the Hospitals release of information form wasn't compliant with theirs. So double the paperwork just to have The Standard talk to my wife's Doctors. Why would they put someone through this when they have a Physicians statement already stating that my wife's condition was permanent. Now, my wife has unfortunately passed away. I notified them by phone a month ago of her passing. They told me that they have a team that oversees the claim for life insurance and I would be contacted shortly. Yet, I have received no phone call or any correspondence from The Standard. I have called to request updates or get an idea of what is happening. All I get from them is that I have to wait to hear from their "team." At this point I am not very satisfied with The Standard. My overall impression is that they are a small company biting off more than they can chew. read more

For example, when I started receiving SS benefits, the TS made an error in how much lump sum reimbursement was required from the SAS. The error made by TS was thousands of dollars. My wife's company used The Standard for 401K services. My wife worked for her company for 7 years and we left the 401K for 3 more years with the Standard. When we decided to move the money to another business to manage it, we had the check cut to the wrong name. Our fault. Standard wanted $50 to re-issue the check as that is their standard fee. Human error on our part and in an account with not that much money, they want $50. The Standard does not understand customer service. $50 to stop a check and issue another!!! How about $10 or $20 as that is more human and compensates for their time. Nope. The Standard and their supervisor would not budge. If there policy was $100 or $500, I guess we would have to pay that too as they are holding the check hostage until we pay as we cannot get a reissue. If I could give a ZERO star rating, I think I would. OHSU (unfortunately) uses the Standard as The "enforcer/gatekeeper" for all absences. In my case, my husband has been very ill for the last several years. I had no choice but to start (intermittent) FMLA, which is a Federally Protected benefit. I have had nothing but problems from these guys. They don't often return phone calls (even after my THIRD request to speak with a supervisor). They are very slow to act, hence I have a short- or no paycheck- multiple times. (Did I mention my husband was very ill?) They have tortured myself and our primary physician with repeated requests (the latest- 3 in less than 6 months) for more paperwork. More time away from caring for my husband. Their team has some SERIOUS training issues. Turns out, after all the heartburn they've given me during a very difficult time, the whole problem could have been avoided with a simple "as needed" entry by physician when he was asked how often I needed to use my FMLA. I do not know how a physician is expected to divine the number of days a patient will decompensate each six months anyway. The Standard has been nothing better than Obstructionist- just ONE MORE problem that I have to deal with...If you have a child or spouse with a serious health issue and you are forced to deal with the Standard... all I can say is, Good Luck!
