We were visiting family in the area and called in to try it out and found just what we wanted, simple food and a pint at realistic prices. A couple of days ago, we called in for Sunday Lunch and it was perfect. We had a bit of a wait but only because they were cooking real roast potatoes and yorkshire puds. Even the horseradish sauce was homemade!

So much so, that they've erected publicities on a pole outside in the green. Hey, if you've got it, flaunt it, right? While I can't speak to the food, I can wholeheartedly report that the staff is smiley and friendly, the Doom Bar real ale is refreshing after a five mile jaunt through the countryside*, and the back garden is sun-drenched and filled with laughing children on a Sunday afternoon. This seems like quite the weekend social hub of Blackmore - not that there's much in the way of competition. Although I'd just had a reasonably filling sandwich for lunch on the green outside, I began to salivate uncontrollably upon seeing (and smelling) the fish and chips brought to a table near us. That's in contrast to the burger on a dowdy-looking bun that her dining companion had. I won't lie, I considered shanking the other diner for a bite, but she was Asian too, and probably hungrier than I was. She might have bitten my ear off or worse. Instead, I just ogled from afar. Whether you're seeking a comely cosy bar scene, a fine dining experience, or a lovely afternoon sit in the sun, The Leather Bottle's likely to do you just fine. You just have to be willing to make the trek from Ingatestone - but a worthwhile sojourn it is! ---- * And quite reasonably priced, considering we had a pint and a half of real ale for barely over £4.

Very small and really quaint with loads of real ales on pump. Nice seating area outside for the summer visitors with outstanding views of the Essex countryside. I have recommended it to many people, it is a great shame I will never go back. I had booked a table for nine people to celebrate my birthday .I rung three times on morning of meal to extend to ten people to eventually be told, very aggressively, that they were closed due to a family bereavement. Ok, totally understandable but more than half an hours notice would have been useful. When I queried why we had not been telephoned I was told, again in a very aggressive manner, that they did not have my number and was I not listening, they would not serve us and he slammed the phone down. A week or so later I visited the pub, as I often have after playing golf' to be greeted by Mr. Kirtley appearing from the back of the pub in a totally aggressive, intimidating and frightening manner shouting and swearing at me to, "Get out of my pub or I will throw you out". He subsequently manhandled me to the door and threw me to the ground injuring my hands. I later suffered chest pains and was taken by ambulance to A&E, where I spent around five hours having tests. I know Mr Kirtley has lost his brother and for that he has my sincere condolences, we have all lost friends and relatives but don't react so violently. This sort of behaviour is not acceptable particularly to someone who has been a loyal and supportive customer over many years. Lastly, I still have no idea what upset him. Steer clear is my advice!!

Never enjoyed it as much as I did last year but still was a good night, staff are friendly and helpful and the pub is beautiful, I would definitely recommend it but whether I will come back for a third year remains to be seen. There is no reception what so ever or Wi-Fi in the pub, if you're there early and meeting people this can cause problems for that i give it 3 stars and not 4.

We were seven in all and we all agreed that this place was expensive and certainly not worth a second visit. The starters were difficult to find as they were so small on the plate and the main dishes were extremely poor. The owners' attitude was equally bad telling me that she had a large party of people in today and they thought it was wonderful. Rather than trying to prove the quality of the Pub (and I call it that) because in no way does this qualify to be called a restaurant. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Not only should the kitchen take some lessons in fine dining but the management needs to go back to school to learn that the customer needs to return to stay in business. This is a lesson that she has obviously not learned. Take my advice and find an eatery that appreciates your custom and where you can park safely.
