Well for one I got a second opinion for my children and they don't like that. They took total offense to that. The dental hygienist are extremely rude and give unwarranted judgments, yelling across the office about what they are doing with my children's teeth. Confidentiality is huge and it's nobody's business but ours how our kids "floss and brush" The straw that broke the camels back- I cancelled an appointment and said I had the work done with my dentist, and instead of being an adult and professional, "Mickey here" hung up on me. My grandchildren have all been to the Smile Shop. I knew they really didn't want to take the Medicaid FFS insurance, but they previously did do some dental work on my young grandchild. I called and made an appointment to have her tooth looked at because another dentist recommended pulling a temporary tooth. They scheduled the appointment approximately 2 weeks out and said, they took that insurance. As I'm driving, and almost to the office, approximately 5 minutes away, the front office calls and cancels the appointment. They said they don't take Medicaid. This was very unprofessional, and if I cancelled at the last minute I would have been charged. read more

If you ask too many questions or have records sent to another practitioner you'll get "fired." Got a letter that said "After careful consideration we are withdrawing from the further dental management of your child(ren)." It went on to say "you had stated that you had taken (your child) to another dental office and we feel at this time it is best that you have his treatment completed there." The note was not even signed. At the time of the first and only visit, we paid our bill in full, we were polite and professional, and we did not have any issues with anyone. But we did ask questions about procedures, materials used, and effects on the patient. And at one point we did ask for records to be sent. While this was initially for informational and review purposes, it now looks as if it's going to be permanently. It was interesting to note that during the procedure (not cleaning or initial exam) we did have done there the dentist did not make ANY contact with us at all. The assistants took our child to the operating area and the dentist went straight over there and started work. Afterward the dentist went straight to another patient and did not even acknowledge our presence. Isn't that a little strange? Reno is an underserved market insofar as pedodentistry is concerned. This practice has several offices and they are all scheduled far in advance. My advice is if you want to stay with this outfit, don't ask quesitons, don't ask for information to be sent anywhere, just show up and just go along with the program. It's pretty clear they know this and they don't have the time or inclination for answering questions or handling requests. Or maybe just find another practitioner. read more

We are a graveyard family and my son doesn't get up until 1pm, even after explaining this I was told "That's just the way it is" and " Do you really think that hour is going to make a difference?" If your family has an unconventional schedule or you have a problem being told what time a day your own child is most pleasant, this is not the place for you. read more

I switched from another Pediatric Dentistry over by Lowe's on Hammill Lane after having one bad experience after another and did NOT want my young child (now a teenager) to have a fear of dentistry. That move was over to Smile Shop with Dr McCool and since then, we have had nothing but fantastic experiences when I take my kids (15 yrs and 8 yrs). I can't recall exactly how long, for many years now, think around 7 or 8 years? We have had no issues at all and only positive experiences...they even sponsored a little fundraiser my child put together for at-risk kids. Love this dentistry!! read more

I take my 7yo daughter here for her routine checkups and cleanings. The front staff is friendly and the dentists and dental assistants are patient and professional. They are a bit higher in prices as most places and dont have alot of open availability for quick appointments. So far we havent had any issues here and continue to return. read more

I take my son here. He has special needs so going to the dentist is with him is always a tough gig. I got to hand it to them- they are patient and kind. The staff is nice, the actual dentist (I go to the NW Reno branch) is super sweet. Service is good. Billing SUCKS Why I downgrade this place is because they ALWAYS send me a full bill for my services even AFTER I get my EOB from my insurance saying they've paid in full. I end up stuffing the Explanation of Benefits in their invoice and sending it back to them. Right now I have a $376 bill on my counter I got today--and I know and they know that my insurance covered all but $196 of the last visit, which I paid same day- yet they still send me a bill for the remainder, even though we both know my insurance will handle that. But if I don't respond, they'll continue to send me bills and rack up some fees. Ridiculous. I know they have people hired to do this job. My job is to bring you a patient and pay my part, not to close the loop with my insurance and connect third party dots for you. Grrrr. If they'd stop sending my outrageous and unfounded bills, I'd give this place many more stars. I really hope they end this practice soon. The place is conveniently close to my house and I've been taking my oldest son there for a few years now. If another pediatric dentist comes to my area soon, I'll move unless this billing nonsense goes away. Who has time for that? read more

We normally go to see Dr. Stoker at the office on Ambassador, but earlier this month, due to a (my) scheduling conflict, we saw Dr. Adams at this office. It has been about two weeks since we were there and there was something that Dr. Adams said that has stuck with me...prompting this review. "Thank you for bringing your children in to see me today." Seems like a simple enough line, but I have been in to many businesses since then and have paid attention to the earnestness at which the simple thank you is said - and no one can compare to Dr. Adams. He took the time to explain, in simple terms (that a non-dental person can easily understand), what each of the conditions my kids have, how they are caused and how we can fix them. He even took a quick peek in the baby's mouth (at all 4 not-fully-grown-in-teeth) and gave us a "Baby Banana Brush" which is not only a great infant toothbrush, but fantastic for teething. The baby loves that thing and is still carrying it around with him! Cindy, the lady at the front who handles the scheduling & took our payment, is quick and professional. She called me right back when I needed to change my appointment and also set up a billing arrangement and next appointments for 6 months from now. Thank You, Smile Shop! Worst experience as far as a pediatric dentist, issues soon as we walked in the door. Made a whole treatment plan at the sparks office, who was so amazing over there, however we get over to the reno office, MOSTLY SAME STAFF EVEN and it was just terrible. They were rude, they talk over you, cut you off while talking. AND THEN Kicked me out cause I got mad that I was miss lead to thinking we were doing more then we actually were doing. SO I was upset, so they really told me they were refusing to do my daughter's cavity treatment at all now! So they were willing to let my 8 year old little girl be in terrible tooth pain because I got mad that the communication on BOTH our ends wasn't good! Dr. McCool is AMAZING! She is patient & gentle with my daughter who is now 2, but started seeing Dr. McCool a year ago. My daughter needed oral surgery when she was 1 & Dr. McCool handled it. She put in 3 crowns & did one extraction. My poor daughter is terrified of Dr's anyway, but Dr. McCool always goes out of her way to be patient & loving toward my daughter. Dr. McCool was also very reassuring to me & my husband. She always takes the time to answer all our questions (We always have a list, lol). She makes me feel like we are the only parents she is seeing since she focuses all her attention on us during our appointment. We have never felt rushed. Do not take your child to this practice. I brought my son in for repair of several cavities at the start of covid. Then the office closed. Once open again they said they couldn't get him in for another 4 months for first of several cavity repairs. They said if he had anesthesia they could do it all sooner. Their scheduler/office manager Christie was beyond unprofessional and got rude when the day she scheduled without discussion with me didn't work due to work conflicts. She said she would get back to me a week & 1/2 later with new possible surgery dates. Three weeks later and my several calls later she finally got back to me to tell me she still didn't have a date in the schedule. We will be taking our son to another office. We had been taking our kids to Dr. Adams at The Smile Shop for over 10 years, literally since our two sons began to get their teeth. Our entire family loved Dr. Adams including myself (Dad). A few years ago, Dr. Adams retired and we wish him the very best! However, since his retirement, The Smile Shop has been more and more difficult to work with. We have had three different dentists and the office seems to fight with us over everything, even appointment times. Then, somehow we were dropped from their system. We stopped receiving appointment notices or reminders and no attempts were made by the office to get our kids back in for check-ups. Now, my wife and I are partially at fault for not catching it earlier but we were use to their reminders. So about a year and a half later, we called the office and tried to get an appointment for the kids. We were met with a lack of cooperation from the front office and now we have been informed that our kids would be considered "new patients" and no longer qualify for The Smile Shop at age 13 and 15. Dr. Adams priority was ALWAYS the kids. The new office at The Smile Shop prioritizes their policies over the children they serve. How very disappointing! I made a mistake and was driving to my appointment when Dr. Adam's receptionist called to see if we were ok, turns out I wrote down the time an hour late for my kids appointment! The staff and Dr. Adams were kind enough to see us late-on their lunch hour no less! Dr. Adams is always kind and patient with my little ones and was genuinely happy to see us (even late!). His staff was also very understanding when my 3 year old threw a tantrum. The exam was quick yet thorough. Dr. Adams too the time to answer my questions and gave great suggestions on brushing my one year olds teeth. The dentist was always pretty nice which was the only good thing about coming here. After paying hundreds of dollars up front, out of pocket for work on my daughters teeth, we had to set up a payment plan for the last treatment because it was so much money. It was over $1500 that we were paying on every month, without missing payment, when they decided to cancel my daughters next appointment without telling us. So we showed up for a simple teeth cleaning, but they had canceled it because they said they wouldn't see her until everything was paid off. Even though we had already paid hundreds of dollars up to that point. I felt like they should want her to have her teeth cleaned to keep them nice after all the money we had already spent on having work done on them. Also another thing that irritated me was when my husband, who is my daughters step dad took her to one of her appointments, they refused to see her because my husband is not her biological dad. Even though he is the one who provides insurance for her, and nothing was ever said about this over the phone when I called to make sure I didn't need to be there with her. I had to leave work in the middle of the day, and drive down there to sign paperwork for her to have treatment. And when I got there, was informed that the paper could always be sent via fax, and I could sign it and send it back. Would have been helpful to know since that could have been done without me having to leave work and drive all the way there. read more

In my opinion, this place completely lives up to its name of being a "Shop", because that is exactly what it felt like every time we came here. My first experience with this place was my sons first ever dental exam. He was seen by the female Dr. Stoker. She seemed very cold and not very good with children. After that experience, we decided to stay with the practice but see a different dentist. The next few times, we saw Dr. Adams. He was much better personality wise with my son. What I didn't like, is that my son would see Dr. Adams for his exams, and then he would need to see a different dentist for any of the work that he needed to have done, to me this defeated the purpose of becoming comfortable with one dentist, when he would end up seeing another. In between visits I would get numerous phone calls from their office wanting to schedule cleanings, procedures, etc. They seemed so eager to schedule to get my child in, and it didn't seem to be in a sincere way to have his work done, it literally seemed like they just wanted the money. We were seen for one visit at their Spanish Springs location, where it took over an hour to be seen by Dr. Adams for a simple cleaning and exam. Probably because there were numerous children sitting all over the office in chairs waiting to be seen, again hence the "shop" atmosphere. On our last visit to The Smile Shop, I brought my son in becuase he had a chip and a cavity in one of his molars. We were seen by Dr. Adams. He briefly examined my son, and told me he would need a crown on the tooth. I was a little put-off considering this is a baby tooth and was going to eventually fall out, and wondered why he would need a crown. Beofre I could really ask any questions, Dr. Adams was gone and we were sent up to the dreaded front to the scheduling/money collecting ladies. As we were checking out, she handed me the estimate for the crown procedure that was going to be done by another dentist, and I noticed on the paperwork that it said he would need a pulpotomy (which come to find out is a miniature root canal). I was obviously concerened when I saw it, and I asked the lady what it was. She was visibly irritated and tried to explain it to me. When I began to ask more questions, she became more irritated and told me that Dr. Adams would need to explain it to me. She ushered me back to the exam area, Dr. Adams was in an adjacent room out of sight, but within ear-shot. She proceeded to tell him that I had questions about the procedure. He proceeded to explain it to a young dental assistant and had her come out and tell me instead of just stepping around the corner and telling me himself. I thought it was very rude and unprofessional, but then again, there tons of kids waiting in the "shop" so I guess he didn't have time to fully explain everything to us. Based on the last visit, we decided that we were done with the Smile Shop. I called to have my sons records transferred to his new dentist Dr. Wilkerson at Dentistry for Kids (who's staff and office is AMAZING). When I called to have the records transferred, they didn't even ask why we were leaving, so apparently their patients aren't even important to them. Lastly, even though I called and had the records transferred and told that them that we wouldn't be back, a few weeks later they called to schedule him for the procedure again! Such a joke. I again told them we would not be back, and again, they never even asked why. Since then, we had the same tooth treated with Dr. Wilkerson who pulled the tooth (since it is a baby tooth) instead of doing a root canal and a crown on a baby tooth that was going to fall out anyway. I am so very dissapointed with The Smile Shop, and so gald we found a new dentist who seems to genuinley care about children. read more

Received a bill after service, it is typical to receive something while Delta Dental is processing the payment. No Biggie. So I log on to Delta Dental and see that ALL the Claims have been paid in full after getting another bill with 93.00 late fee added on to it. Now that I am retired and no longer affiliated with The Smile Shop I feel I can write this review and hopefully it will not sound as self serving. I worked at and owned The Smile Shop for twenty five years. For many reasons there truly is no better place to take your children for dental care. All of The Smile Shop dentists are residency trained, board eligible or certified pediatric dentists. This is hugely important as only the best of the best can reach this level. No matter what you have heard, there is quite a difference between this and a general dentist "limiting their practice to children". The dentist's are technically excellent. Their work is as good as it gets. The dentist's are completely trustworthy. We used to call it the "Niki test", my daughter's name. If we wouldn't do it on our kids we won't do it on your kids. If you are told that your child needs a restoration, they need that restoration. This also makes The Smile Shop an excellent place for second opinions. The entire office wants the best experience for your child. All the assistants and front desk are trained in this manner. Everyone will take all the time that is necessary to assure this. Upon recommendations from local Reddit users, I brought my kids to this Dentist for over a year. I'm now switching. The doctors are professional and the entire staff is very nice. The office is clean, and the children love the waiting games and prizes/rewards. My biggest issue is that they FORCE Gas on kids every time they have anything done. My daughter got a small fill and some seals done and they wanted to charge me an extra $100 (after my insurance coverage) for gas...that she did not need. When I tired to decline the gas they berated me about her "comfort" and made me look like a terrible parent in front of all of the other patients because I choose not to give my children substances that are not needed. She was supposed to go back to school after a TINY fill and instead had to stay home because of the effects of the Nitrous Oxide after I gave in because they made HER feel like she was going to suffer greatly if she did not have it. In the end they did not charge me for the gas, but then made me feel horrible at payment for not wanting to pay for something that I had declined multiple times. I would absolutely recommend this Dentist to a parent that is fine with their child being un-necessarily gassed up for a fill. I will not be returning though. Just not my Cup of tea. read more

We go to the Sparks location for both of my children. We love it! The receptionists are helpful. The dental hygienist is gentle with my kids and explains everything she's doing to them. The dentist is gentle and friendly and makes the process less scary for kids. My kids enjoy playing the video games while waiting and watching the movies while getting their work done. This is the first time in years that my children are comfortable with any dentist office and I'm glad we found them! We'll continue to see them until my kids outgrow pediatric dentistry. Also, we've never had any issue with overbooking at this location. They even squeezed us in one day for a dental emergency. read more

The third time was the charm. I have tried two other children's dentist and this office is by far the best. Their office staff is always very friendly and helpful. My son is 3 and requires IV sedation surgery at Renown. Christy has been amazing with getting everything authorized for us and they were able to use a facility that was covered by my medical insurance. Dr. McCool and the staff are amazing. My son is difficult and they almost got him to take xrays which was more than any other dentist had done. They are very kind and patient and I will not take my kids anywhere else. went to dr austin first in sparks. but was stuck in a dark, cramped and scary exam room with a hyperactive 3yr old. they couldn't do any of the work in the office so had to send him to be completely put under at a surgery center even to take x-rays. when our insurance changed we had to check out a different dentist and found the smile shop. my grandson loved it immediately. open, airy and bright. he never felt cramped, scared or bored. no sedation for anything including x-rays. he has had to have some nitrous gas for having his teeth painted because he has trouble sitting still. but that went great. the front desk staff is really nice and helpful. i would recommend them in a heartbeat. read more

We lived in Mammoth when our children were little and would drive 3 hours just to see Dr. Adams. This is the very best pediatric dentistry, ever! I have been taking my daughter to The Smile Shop since 2009 when we moved here from Las Vegas. We have always been treated with kindness, respect and thoughtfulness. They have never been rushed or brushed off. The staff has always been helpful and answered all questions. We have been to all of there offices and now only go to the Spanish Springs office because it's 2 min from my home. My daughter loves the office and all the staff. She isn't afraid of the dentist and I credit their caring nature as part of the reason. Today we were in and out in 30 min which included a cleaning, exam and prize selection! I brought my daughter when she was 3 and it was ok but when I brought her few months ago they kicked us out just because we refused to have our daughter have the x-ray. Female dentist refused to treat her. They sent us a letter stating that they no longer want our daughter to be serviced. Patients have the right to refuse a particular treatment. What a joke of a doctor! Took my son here because he had a really bad toothache and our normal dentist was out of the office and this was the on-call dentist. They took an extra and the doctor said that he was going to prescribe an antibiotic and refer us back to our regular dentist for the extraction. I already knew what was going on and what needed to be done. I explained this to them on the phone. The doctor said that they don't normally do treatment for on-call patients. They just see them and then refer them back to their regular dentist. Needless to say, I was pissed! If this is what they normally do, they could've told me that on the phone when I explained what was going on. I'm sure it's simply a way for them to make some more money by charging patients for an emergency exam but not actually doing anything for them. So, in the end, nothing was actually done and we'll end up back at our regular dentist...who has managed in the past to remove a slightly infected tooth without a problem. All-around, it was a waste of time visiting a useless doctor. If you're going there as an emergency patient because this place is the on-call dentist, don't waste your time. read more

I have been going to this office for many many years and started at the Moana office in reno the Dr Stoker and Dr Adams are awesome but if the first impression (the office ladies and office mangers have no excellent Customer service skills ) then its just another business just trying to take peoples money and really doesn't care about there practice or business . I would deffinately re-evaluate the office manger / workers real closely . I really love the Drs. but I did find another dentistry that actually cares about there patient customer service wise . I was so offended, I felt like telling this woman my story, that does not include me using and abusing government assistance. My kids had a great first visit with the male doctor ( I forget his name) But the last visit was awful. The front desk person was rude and the tech (who has an obvious lisp, name unknown) was gagging my child when she was cleaning her teeth. The response I got from her was "your kid made me drop my instrument!" Wow, she was having a bad day. Then not to mention they do not talk to you about your insurance, like all my other dentists do. I had a few things not covered and of course nothing is said to me and I unfortunately didn't have time to check prior to the appointment. My charges were times two because I had two little ones at the appointment. Then I was told my very good dental insurance is the same as Medicaid?!? I also think the dentist (who was also grumpy) overlooked something and she won't do a recheck even though its been about a month, without another charge. My dentist, who is awesome by the way is going to check her for no charge. This was at the Sparks satellite office. Its a great location, terrible place. Their billing office has earned this one star review. I'm currently four months into a battle with their office over a regular check up for my daughter. According to my insurance, the Smile Shop has never submitted my bill for payment. So the Smile Shop continually sends me a bill, tacking on late payments each month. I've called several times and they lie saying they submitted my insurance and my insurance denied the claim. Just received my fifth notice and can't wait to hear them lie about submitting it again when I have proof they haven't from my insurance. No dentist is worth this hassle. read more

I like Dr. Stoker. but the front desk workers are incredible rude. I take my daughter to the NW location on Mae Anne Ave. but the stuff is the same since they are at this location only on Tuesdays, when you called to schedule an appointment no matter what location you go to you always get the same rude lady's on the phone. On my previous visit when I got there and sign up at the front desk they ask me the name of the patient and then they said we didn't had an appointment I was in shock then I remember the lady who I have talk ever the phone to make the appointment and remember that she was very rude and indifferent she was talking to somebody else while she was talking to me and after I complain and tell them that my daughter needed to be seen by the dentist they tell me that I have to reschedule, I left the office sad, mad and disappointed and with time I just let it go and forgot about it. Today I was there again after along time maybe almost two years when I check in I had no problem but when I check-out omg those lady's at the front desk are worse than rattle snakes, they star asking questions about my insurance an tell me that I have to pay 20% copay when literally I had just spoken to my insurance and they told me I only pay 10% copay anyways as I tell this to the front desk lady she almost wanted to jump out on me and do something to me, she was furious and tell me that I was very hard to talk to and that last time I was there I give her a hard time too I was like what?? what are you talking about?( I forgot about that issue) then she said well it says right here on my computer " mom was very upset for no reason she thought she had an appointment but she didn't" I was like wow yes I do remember that and of course I was really mad because of that but what does that have to do with this? and then she said we always have problems with people like you here at the office and here is my co-worker she is listening to everything, as the other lady respond yes, I remember the issue with her and she is so rude. we don't like that, so I tell her I will have the insurance email me some kind of paper that says I only pay 10% co-pay but at this point it was not about the money or the copay it was something personal against me so I tell the lady : you are so rude this not the way you should treat your costumers, she reply no I'm not you are rude then I tell her I think I have to find another dentist I don't like the way you are treating me and I don't need this BS, she reply whatever we don't care you can go, what she did't know is that I have a Youtube channel with a 450K Subs and millions of views "doctors pay me to review their services and interview their clients" so I tell her you will be on my next review and she is like we DON'T CARE!!! well will see if Dr. Stoker Don't care about this either. read more
