My sister was going to pick up a pair of shoes she looked at on her last visit that she just couldn't stop thinking about. I came along and we had a wonderful day in Jim Thorpe. When I went into Mabacol and I had ZERO intentions of purchasing anything. My feet are so sore if I wear anything but my custom orthotics with my sneakers. I can tell you I strongly dislike shoe shopping and I consider it a miserable ordeal- yanking out insoles- inserting my orthotics etc. That was BEFORE Mabacol!! Maria is so kind, concerned and above all patient as can be! She literally spent hours with my sister and I trying various shoe styles and sizes. I found things that I thought would be comfortable. Maria encouraged me to walk outside in her beautiful shoes to be abundantly sure of the comfort. I was absolutely shocked to have been given this opportunity!! Usually you may not ever even return shoes if they are worn outdoors. She most certainly wants her customers to be comfortable and happy. There are no returns on her custom beauties so that is a good reason for her investing so much time trying to super please the customer. I ended up purchasing two pairs of shoes. They are superior and super comfy! I couldn't be more overjoyed! My sister and I really enjoyed the experience. The time Maria, the owner and creator took with us was an act of love and sincerity in my opinion. The shoes are well worth every penny as they are all unique, different and hand made. I can't say more positive things about Mabacol, the owner, Maria Lloyd, her sales assistants or the products. You can truly see her passion in her work. Maria stops at nothing when it comes to hyper pleasing and customer service. My sister and I both purchased two pairs of shoes. We both knew if we had to choose one we would be obsessing over the one we didn't choose. 9/30/2026. I wore my shoes out and about and I received 4 compliments. Someone actually thought I had purchased my pants and the shoes as a set because the person observed that they matched so well. At every opportunity I used the compliments to talk about Maria, her shop and her designs. I would go back in a heartbeat. Maria is an incredible artist, designer and creator. It's like she is your own stylist- that's the kind of individualized attention you can expect. Many of her shoes are vegan, sustainable, have rice soles, and other options. You needn't take my word for it- go and experience it yourself. The most important thing for me was comfort. Since my feet are larger I usually get stuck with the ugly shoes- NOT HERE!!! There are no ugly shoes in Maria's Jim Thorpe shop.

Soundcheck Records has an impressive selection of CDs and, believe it or not, cassettes for those who appreciate a little nostalgia. Their new vinyl inventory is outstanding, with plenty of albums spanning a variety of genres and artists. When I stopped in, the used vinyl section was a bit limited because many of the records had sold quickly--which is usually a good sign. One look at the prices and it's easy to understand why. Their pricing is fair and collector-friendly, making it hard to leave empty-handed. Beyond the music, they also carry concert T-shirts, mugs, and other music-related merchandise. I was also happy to find a nice selection of discounted Record Store Day vinyl releases, which is always a treat for collectors. What really sets this shop apart are the owners. They're incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about music. If they don't have what you're looking for in stock, they're happy to special order it and even have it shipped directly to you. The day of I was late but lucky, as nobody had taken it yet, and when you were in line they had someone who would help find records for you. Yelp is insisting I say something about value, so I will say that this had an extremely fair price. This was a limited run collectors item and I know for a fact that they priced it well within the usual range for it sold throughout the states, even though they are a very small business is a very small town in the middle of PA. Not saying I expect small businesses to price gouge a little, but for this record and on this big record store day, I did expect to pay a premium and I got a very fair price.
