My boyfriend and two of our friends enjoyed a day at a sneaker (yes, it was called a sneaker festival, not a trainer festival) in Finneston when we decided to venture in to the city for some drinks. Well, they drank, I had water, as I'm currently off the booze for health reasons. Anyway, we were looking for anyplace really that had seating and after trying a few of our normal haunts, we decided to check to see if we could get a seat here. Voila! We could! The catch was that the massive table we were able to score had to be back in a few hours time, which was fine by us. What an interesting concept this place. It's part cafeteria, part bar, part sports pub, part party hall. It really is a massive place with not a single style to call it's own, rather a few mixed in. Loads of family sized wooden tables and benches to sit at, as well as cozy chairs, stool and mini tables. A mixed crowd of kids (yes, kids), families, groups of women and men, and of course us. Three dudes and me. Ha! The lot of us really don't understand why pubs/bars are starting to cater to having kids in among all the drinking and the booze but I digress... The guys decided they were going to partake in the cocktails they had on their list. Mai-thai, and a DeNiro. The Mai-thai, they said was pretty boozy but good and the DeNiro was really sweet. The DeNiro was Jack Daniels, vanilla essence, coke and a piece of orange. They all agreed, instead of an orange, it would have been better with a cherry. I enjoyed my water just fine (boo!!)- but the waiter didn't seemed pleased about serving it. He basically threw it on the table, not even asking who may have ordered it. On top of that, even though I asked for a lemon, it came barely with any ice and no lemon. Oh well. Anyway, I think this could be a place to bring the girls back for a night out. The guys I was with weren't too keen on the music being like in a club and it just wasn't their style. The drinks are a bit pricey, but for one or two, it's ok.

Service was fairly quick, and there's plenty of space and seating. I wouldn't choose it for a meal or evening out, but for an after work drink and munch it does the job.

My husband and I traveled to the UK for about two weeks for our honeymoon this past October, and we visited quite a few places. I walked down a street that Jane Austen walked down to get home. I walked on a stone that an ancient Roman placed in the ground, presumably with his bear hands (or... I don't know. Something Roman-y). I stood in Edinburgh castle and marveled at a city so far removed in both aesthetic and culture from my own that I was nearly breathless from it... But you want to know something? Cafe Mimi's is STILL one of the first places I tell people about when they ask me about my honeymoon. Why? Well, it's possible that I'm romanticizing my experience well beyond recognition of what it actually was, but from what I recall, this was exactly the kind of restaurant my husband and I had been hoping to find. We walked in, we sat down, and we were immediately greeted by the friendliest of friendly cooks (server/owner?). I wanted porridge. Did you know that there are about a hundred ways you can have porridge made for you, and that this man among men at Cafe Mimi's is willing to sit with you and walk you through them until you both create a porridge experience that is completely customized to you? Like, if your porridge were a computer, then someone would have to make rubber imprints of your fingertips just to break in to it. And you don't want anyone breaking in to it, because it's the best damn computer you've ever had. Eh... analogies are dumb. The porridge, on the other hand, was awesome. Meanwhile, if you order a cup of tea, they bring you a bottomless bowl of it. So. Much. Tea. It's like, forget the teapot; just bring me all my tea in one cup in one go, and walk away. Walk. Away. I just asked Dan if he remembered what he got, but since he rarely remembers what he orders in the same minute he ordered it, he informed me just now that he didn't. He did, however, say that he remembers it being "delicious." So, let's tally up the score here. Friendly and helpful service? Check. Good food? Check. Good prices? Check. Second and last ever visit, had to wait 30 minutes to be seated and another 30 to be served - service is terrible - this time I had the Blueberry Pancake Breakfast - this order was put through incorrectly and for some reason served on two plates, though there was more than enough space on one - The hash browns were raw and the rest of the food looked unappetizing and cold. I came back here only because we wanted to grab something small and quick before a gig at the Hydro and we couldn't be bothered going elsewhere. The bf ordered soup and I got chips cause I wasn't very hungry. It would be pretty difficult to mess this up, right? Wrong. The food came really quickly, almost as soon as my bf had come back from ordering it, which was pretty worrying to begin with. The chips were obviously just frozen ones which had been deep-fried and they were ok, but just ok. The soup wasn't that hot, the mug it was in was barely warm at all and according to the bf, it really wasn't very good - he hardly ate any of it! The place itself is ok, I see what they're trying to do with the whole industrial look but there just isn't really any atmosphere. 2 stars only because the staff were really friendly and nice!! Won't be back here if I can help it. Might try the Kitchen part, but probably only if I didn't really have any other options.

I'm not a great fan of the layout; parts of it could have been more sheltered since I felt like I was sitting right in the middle of the SECC concourse, on busy concert nights I can imagine you would feel very hemmed in. If you felt the call of nature whilst eating, I imagine your food would probably be cold by the time you went to the loo on a busy concert night. The food itself is really tasty however, my friend and I shared some coca cola ribs to start (we were getting the rest of the meal free so figured we should at least buy something!); these were juicy and smokey and the meal literally fell of the bone. Yum! Next, we both opted to try the Strathdon pizza (Aberdeenshire blue cheese, mozzarella and pancetta). I love blue cheese on a pizza, so rich and adds a little extra something to a pizza I feel. We both found these to be lovely, well-made and not skimpy with toppings. The service was a little so-so. As I mentioned, we both ordered pizzas so we thought we would get some proper knives/cutters to attack these with. How wrong we were, we had to struggle through with just normal butter knives. Messy! They also tried to charge us for the full meal, even though Vicky had clearly stated at the time of booking that she was a competition winner. On the other hand, our server (I can't remember his name), was very attentive and coped well with a busy night and was very helpful in offering tips and advice on what to try. Overall, a bit meh. Good food but the service and the layout isn't great sadly.

They're about the same size and always packed, and huzzah, their sandwiches are delicious at both locations. I had walked by a few times the day I finally popped in for a late lunch, as they were swamped the whole lunch rush. I managed to squeeze in to the queue around 2pm and I could tell they had just been through the ringer with the lunch crowd. The guy ahead of me wanted a chicken tikka sandwich but they were out of a couple of the ingredients, so he ordered something else. When it was my turn to order, the guy jokingly said 'let's see if I'm able to make your sandwich!" I ordered the Chiken Ole which was chicken meat, manchego cheese, chorizo, salsa and a spicy mayo on ciabatta. The only one thing they didn't have was the salsa, which in exchange they offered me a bit of salad with some sweet chili sauce. I decided against the sauce and took the salad! What a delightful sandwich this was. My stomach is growling just thinking about it! The bread was freshly baked and so delicious, even at 2pm. The ingredients were all fresh and piled high in to the bread. I also grabbed a bag of crisps and a lemon mint san pellagrino. The greatest lunch on the go I've had in a long while. The guys in here were cool as anything and the music was great. The queues might be long but the sandwiches are worth it. They also serve soups, coffee and baked goods if you're looking for something sweet. I will be back for sure!
