The River Lea holds a special place in my heart. As a rower, I've spent the better part of the last 6 years either paddling along the river, running/riding along the tow-path trying not to be late to training (because I've stopped to take yet another picture of the early morning mist, sunrise or frost on the grass) or sitting at one of the cafes or pubs in the afternoon. Even so, I never tire of it.
Not only is it a great place for exercise, but it's awesome for a chill day out with friends, and there are loads of date-spots along it...especially with all the great pubs and restaurants in Hackney Wick...although if those are too crowded for you, there are others on the walk up to Tottenham Lock. In the summer sloe berries grow along the towpath(I picked loads last year and made a few bottles of sloe gin) and along the paths in the marshes there are blackberries...blackberry cobbler! YUM! There are secluded paths through the marshes where you feel miles away from London, big fields for kite-flying or picnicking or you can head to the Olympic Park and have a look around. The barges are great scenery, and I always wish I knew someone that lived on one, so I could get invited on for a cruise!
It's a wonderful part of London, with lots of different options for things to see, do and eat. Definitely recommend a day on the Lea! read more
