I am visiting Winston Salem from another state so I don't know anyone here that could recommend me a place for a good haircut. I found the Refinery with good reviews online. I called just for a haircut and they gave me an appointment for a little bit later the same day which surprised me but I was pleased. They said the price was $45 which is much cheaper than what I pay where I live. The issue is that the girl that cut my hair is just learning ( therefore the price I assume) I could have someone at home do my haircut. I don't mind someone learning but another senior person at the salon should have come to review and show this girl how to do it better, so right now I'm still in need of a good haircut and out of $55 with the tip. Chelsey has cut and colored my hair for nearly four years. I have a short hairstyle that she keeps fresh and easy to maintain. I can't imagine going anywhere else. The shop is very cool on the inside, with great music playing (but never too loud). The staff is friendly, and I come out feeling pampered. read more

Tika is amazing! Long story short, I hadn't done anything with my hair in about 3 years. It is thick and curly and had gotten very long. She helped me decide on a style, washed, cut, dried, and styled all within about 30 minutes. And I love how it turned out! I have never had a haircut done so quickly and with such great results. Went to Alice for my haircut and she did a great job! I had just had a horrible haircut and she made my hair look good again! I have really fine hair that's generally pretty annoying to cut, but Alice was really gentle, so as not to cause breakage, she took her time, and continued to ask if I liked my haircut or if I would change anything. Tika is the best, highlights & Haircut are always perfect. I have been trying to grow my hair out for 4 years but all the other stylists either over processed or under processed my hair. I found Tika about a year ago, thanks to others leaving honest and great reviews about her and the salon. My hair is finally long and the highlights are perfect ( and have been since my first appt with her). I drive 2.5 hours each way to get my hair done by her and I would drive 8 hours if I had to. One of the hardest things about moving is finding a new hair stylist (sounds dramatic, but I stand by it). I stumbled across The Refinery on Yelp and decided to give them a try. Chelsey is the owner and while it is currently just her and one other stylist who are taking appointments (they should be adding more soon), they do such a wonderful job. I have long hair and a decent amount of it, and every stylist I've been to in the past has almost always booked me for a 4 hour cut and color appointment. So, imagine my surprise when I scheduled myself for a two and a half hour color appointment and Chelsey was also able to get a cut squeezed in there. Not only is she efficient, but she clearly knows what she's doing and does a wonderful job. I cannot recommend this salon highly enough. Your search is over! read more

This salon is exactly what I have been searching for in Winston! Having moved from a smaller city, I figured it would be easy to find an upscale, trendy salon with talented colorists and stylists. I was wrong. If you just search through Yelp, you'll see few salons with reviews, making it hard to decide where to go. Everyone at The Refinery is fantastic! I felt welcomed and my hair cut and color are beautiful. I didn't get the "I'm going to push product on you now" vibe from anyone. That's always a bit annoying to say the least. DON'T COME HERE! This is a long overdue review, but I was here a few months ago and got a haircut by their junior hairstylist. She was a young woman with short blonde hair. I was quoted for my haircut over the phone, but it wasn't until after my haircut that the stylist decided to charge me $10 extra. She did NOT even explain why until I asked. Her explanation was that my hair is really thick. She should have told me at the beginning before cutting my hair, asking if it was okay. I have also never heard of anyone charging extra for thickness--usually it is only for length. However, my hair was not that long whatsoever. It is so unprofessional to do something like this. I regret not speaking up earlier and also regret leaving a tip. Furthermore, my hair was lopsided. I told her at the end when I noticed the unevenness. She fixed it a little bit but when I decided to get another haircut a few weeks later, the new stylist noticed how uneven it was in the front. The salon itself is clean and nice, but the pricing is definitely not worth it for the junior stylist. I wish I remembered her name, but stay away! read more

I scheduled an appointment weeks in advance to get a blowout in June for a wedding. Last minute the salon had an issue with the stylist who was supposed to do my hair. However, Chelsey, the owner, came in on her off day just for me and did a fantastic job! I got beachy waves and it looked great even 10 hours later. This was my first time visiting this salon. The location is easy to find in downtown Winston Salem. The building is elegant and the salon has classy decoration. If you are like me and you care about the whole experience of going to the salon to relax and feel good, then you need to try them out! We moved here one year ago and I have been to 3 other salons, Refinery being my fourth. The first three had very good reputations but they really did a bad job on my hair. Today I went to Chelsey as a result of Yelp reviews. SHE WAS AMAZING. From my color which is probably my favorite color I have ever had; the cut, which is more adorable than I anticipated; the salon, spotless and friendly; the staff, a very nice group of girls; to the PRICE, very reasonable.
