Great place to meet friends for a nice meal. Our friends came over from Cedar Rapids to meet us for lunch at the Quarry. They are both vegetarians and had plenty of choices here. I went to the quarry for happy hour food and a drink. I'd say this is the best happy hour spot for food and drink, when warm out, in all of Mason City. We had a Mother's Day meal at the Quarry. Our table was great, the wait staff attentive and pleasant. The menu selection was disappointing. Mostly sandwiches. We had a child along and no kid's menu. The Mac n Cheese was a quantity that our table of 6 could have been satisfied with. Other choices were spicy so not a possibility. The great part of my meal was the beet salad. That was delicious. Then towards closing the staff started the vacuum..... we have NEVER heard anything so loud and annoying. The young man should have been using hearing protection. Overall we were not happy with our choices- the pore-boy was steak with lots of fat (covered up with cheese) and the club sandwich fell apart and had to be eaten with a fork. read more

I REALLY wanted to like this place! It's in a Prime location in downtown Mason City, Iowa. In a quaint little outside mall area right next door to the FABULOUS Historic Park Inn which is a national treasure of a hotel built by Frank Lloyd Wright. From the outside The Quarry and Tapas Bar looks inviting. It offers plenty of outdoor seating, but we opted for inside due to the wind. They had opened for dinner at 4:00pm and we arrived about 4:30. We were sat immediately and told the chef wasn't there so they didn't know the "specials" yet but told the soup choices.... Then our server walked away... We had no idea what that meant... could we only order soup? Was the chef ever coming in? Should we wait? Soooo many questions... we waited about 10 minutes - looked through the menu - searched Yelp for other food options and finally the server came back and told us that she only meant the "head chef" wasn't there.... Ohhhhh clarity! So we ordered... a garlic chicken salad wrap, a garlic chicken open faced sandwich, and a California burger on a gluten free bun. The garlic chicken salad was good ... it was definitely garlicky.... But the California burger was not.... It was not a California burger and it was not good. The California burger is supposed to have chorizo, jalapeño aioli, pepper jack cheese, sautéed onions, and guacamole. I received a teeny 1/4 burger cut in half and placed on a giant deli roll with a slice of lettuce and tomato. I asked the server who said they didn't know what happened and that was a regular quarry burger... and walked off.... Ummmm hellloooo! That was it.. what the heck! And what the heck was I supposed to do? I finally decided I'd eat what I was given - mistake. I should have walked. At some point the server came by and told me they were making a California burger to go for me but the bill arrived but no burger.... So glad Iowa opened up. We're from out of town but I know residents of Mason City echo this statement by how busy the Quarry restaurant was on the Saturday night we dined there. They were at full 100% capacity. Staff wore masks and hand sanitizer was on our table. This is the place to go for excellent food and service in Mason City. A total five star experience. Sadly, they, like a lot of restaurants in this city are closed on Sundays so you need to plan accordingly. Now for the review. Saturday 7:00pm, no reservation, we entered the packed restaurant. Luck was one our side and a table for two was available. We were promptly seated and after a small wait our waitress stopped by for a drink order. Being from Wisconsin we had to try the Quarry craft whisky old fashions. They were well mixed with muddled fruit, rye whiskey and a huge block of ice to keep it cool without watering It down. Superb. We had to have two! The menu is extensive running the gamut from appetizers, to burgers, pub fare and dinner entrees. Everything looked good but we were here for an upscale dinner. After surreptitiously eyeing our neighbors order of trashcan nachos and drooling over them we decided to pass as the portion could easily feed four football players and there were only two of us. Maybe on another day. We made the right decision and started out with soup. The crab bisque had a good texture full of creamy goodness and chunks of crab. It's a house specialty. As good as it was, the clam chowder outshined it. Chunks of potato and clams with the right amount of heavy cream to make it sing without over shadowing the clams. If I lived here I'd be here every Saturday just for the soup. Our entrees were also excellent. Ribeye steak perfectly rare, nicely seasoned with garlic mashed potatoes. Yum! The shrimp pasta was exceptional. Six succulent shrimp sautéed until just done served over garlic Parmesan spaghetti -- a very large portion of spaghetti. It was so good I wanted to finish it all. Unfortunately I just couldn't. Needless to say we passed on dessert. The service was very attentive. Along with our waitress Laura a four day newbie took care of us. I wish I'd asked for his name because he stopped by several times to check on us and was very friendly as was Laura. Definitely make The Quarry a stop on your next visit to Mason City. read more

Fantastic food. We had the pork tacos, gyro flatbread, crab bisque soup, Greek salad, and crab cakes. Crab cakes are always good, so tough to give any rating here. Excellent. Crab bisque soup was awesome. Piping hot, had some spice AND there was enough crab to know you had it, not just flavor, but chunks, too. Gyro flatbread broke my tradition of pizza is pizza with the regular ingredients. Very good. Pork taco wee good as well, but we were too full to eat it all. Go , eat. Expensive and worth it on food side. Thought the service was ok. Nice, but not always available. Ok, Restaurant has stiff prices, as seems a little like a bar setting. It was fine but seems more upscale than a bar. Wine was too high to try a bottle. Liquor store is down the road 300'. Need to drop the price and sell some. read more

This restaurant is tucked into a small outdoor section of the mall in mason city. The location is great. It's convenient and beautiful to walk around outside. The restaurant looks like a bar and grill when you walk in. There's a bar up front, and another one in the back room beyond the bathrooms. My group called ahead and made reservations for Saturday at 7. When we showed up, nobody asked us about reservations. There was no host/hostess. There was just a sign that said please seat yourself. So I guess reservations aren't required or honored. Our server was pleasant, if not a little on the up-sale pushy side. We ordered drinks, they were pricey, slow to arrive, but good. We ordered food, where there was more upselling. The server came back and confirmed our order because he didn't write anything down and had forgotten. Food came out. The mussels are amazing. The bread with the mussels is amazing. Girlfriend got the rack of lamb. It was amazing. I got the duck. I should have gotten something else. We were sitting by the kitchen and everything that came out looked really good. We ordered a second round of drinks. Waiter didn't know what I was ordering when it was the first drink on the menu. He tried to upsell the alcohol choice and the drink still came out wrong and charged wrong. The bill arrived without an offer of coffee or dessert. Waiter was slow to run the bill. I'm glad they offer math for tip amounts on the receipt. I dropped my normal tip amount to the minimum suggested amount and we left. I'd come back because the food is good, but I'd sit at the bar. It seems like many people have trouble with poor service for the price paid. I hope they can fix the minor shortcomings and truly shine. read more

Every so often, you come across one of those places were your expectations are slightly above average, but they get blown out of the water by what you find. On multiple fronts, the Quarry restaurant did that for me last night. It's been a long while since I ate somewhere where everything was so memorable. The story began when I met a buddy at this spot. Nestled downtown by a hotel and a bit off the beaten path, it sets a nice ambiance to begin. There's a dining side and a bar side, both of which serve the same menu. Set ups are nice either place. The bar side is surprisingly quiet with a couple TVs and a nice array of seating options. The restaurant side is very quaint and almost rustic feeling - the building is a little older and it adds a certain charm. The beer menu isn't extensive, but has 10 or so different and solid brews from around the country. The wine list is a bit better and there's certainly no lack of things to try! The food is where I was blown away and unexpectedly so. A friend who's opinion I highly value told me this was one of his new favorite places. Three of us ended up sharing 3 appetizers, 2 entrees and a salad. It was one of the best meals I've had in a few years. For appetizer, we had mushrooms over rice, avocado fries and the macadamia nut fried goat cheese. The goat chees was unique and came with a fig and orange compote - Incredible flavors. The avocado fries were solid as well - lightly breaded to give the avocado just a bit of girth. Finally, the mushrooms. These were in the top 10 appetizers I've ever had. Light sautee', bruschetta, served over rice to keep the flavor locked on the plate. I found myself chewing longer as the flavor was so good. For the salad, we had the Ceasar, which I don't normally get excited about. This one however had "grilled lettuce". Sounds weird, it was BOSS! The light char gave a little smoky flavor up front and changed the flavor of the salad enough to make it really memorable! The Jambalaya was excellent with just enough kick. Rumor has it that the chef has spent time in NOLA and this dish would confirm such a rumor. The dish of the night and perhaps of the year was the Ossa Bucco - This red wine braised pork shank served with sweet potato strings and gravy was far and away one of the best things I have ever had to eat - and this hoss eats a lot! The pork was falling off the bone like it was it's business and the gravy just made me want to sing. A friend described it as "laughably good" and that's exactly what it was. I seriously can't overstate how delicious this dish was. Ms. Gaga had her meat dress, I would don a dress made of this, only to have it fall off gracefully such that I could enjoy a dress sized portion. Straight up, if you only have one meal in Iowa, come here and get the Ossa Bucco - you've love it! This is one of my new favorite places to eat in the country. A must try for anyone in town, anyone in the state and anyone in adjacent states! read more

All restaurant problems can be fixed; all customers can be retained. But only if the staff cares. This staff doesn't care a bit. When a customer finds a 2-inch piece of metal wire in their lobster mac and cheese, it's not enough to shrug and take it off the bill. An apology is needed; a visit by the manager is ideal. That experience was the worst part of a mediocre evening... Arriving, we were seated indoors. The decor was dark and drab. Even before we ordered, a waitress moved along an adjoining row of tables spraying cleaner directly onto the tables. (We'd never seen that before, not with clients already seated.) A chemical mist filled the air. And our nostrils. And the air around our infant. After the wire was discovered, our waitress merely shrugged, said she'd take it off the bill, turned, and made a poorly-concealed roll of the eyes. And that was the end of that. Leaving, we asked to see a manager. No manager, so we were directed to the bartender. she didn't care either: "Well, we've got to clean the tables!" No apology, no concern at all, no reaction to the wire in the food Guess we could have anticipated this: everyone seemed to be wearing faded cut-off jeans. The Quarry is a great place for dinner. I've eaten here three times and each visit and meal was excellent. The menu hasn't changed a whole lot but the ravioli was great. I've eaten other entree and small plates which are equally tasty. The servers are timely with everything and professional.
