I stopped searching when to my surprise I found a wonderful Asian hairdresser that was able to tame my head of crazy curls for 7 years. When she quit styling to learn English this past year I was left without a hairdresser. For a quick blowout I have a spot near my job, but what about when I'm home and in need of more serious work? My sister in law has a super cool short haircut that compliments her edgy style and I've been dying to take the leap but wouldn't trust anyone near my hair with a pair of scissors other than my Dominican peoples. After doing some Yelp searching, I found Amiris and am beyond happy with finally getting the haircut of my dreams! Every time I went with a picture to my former hair dresser I would get a close but no cigar. It was partially my fault because I feared going too short. Amiris and her daughter Yvette wanted to make sure I was ready for the drastic change and advised that sometimes shorter can mean more maintenance, but reassured me it would look great on my head shape. As the hair evolution took place I felt a freedom and immense joy come over me. It was as if God placed me in Amiris divine hands for a reason. As Amiris cut my hair she told me about the history of her salon and how her mission is to make everyone that enters feel at home. Dominican hair stylists always get those blowouts done right but I've been avoiding them mostly because of the rowdy and gossipy atmosphere and loud music. At Amiris hair salon you won't get any of that and I certainly felt at home. I was quoted $145 for a silk press and $65 for a trim, yet somehow the final bill landed around $300--both times. And we're talking about a natural girl here. The moment I step outside, my hair is already negotiating with every molecule of humidity in the atmosphere. A silk press has a limited life expectancy; I cannot justify treating one like a financial investment. On my second visit, an unfriendly assistant also decided my appointment came with an unsolicited supporting role in her TikTok content, filming the blow-drying process without first asking my consent. Ultimately, the value simply isn't there. A $300 silk press that looks like every other competent silk press I've had does not suddenly become haute couture because it happened in SoHo. What exactly is the premium for--the zip code? Proximity to designer boutiques? Nika did a nice job, but "nice" does not make a basic silk press worth $300. At these prices, I expected my hair to reject humidity and remain silky until further notice. It did neither. The math simply does not math.
