A friend and I visited last week. This is a small museum that tells the story of Poe's life and has many artifacts from his life. I really enjoyed learning about his life and especially seeing his monogrammed pocketwatch that was the inspiration of "The Tell-Tale Heart". It doesn't take too long to walk through the three buildings and garden, and is a great place to visit in Shockoe Bottom. The gift shop also has some cool items for sale. read more

I made it past the last entrance time but the staff was accomodating and allowed me to enter. The museum was both a fun and informative experience. I've been a fan of Poe since middle school, so I'm not sure what took me so long to visit this museum, but I'm glad I finally did. It's small but packs a mighty punch! Despite the size, there is so much to explore and take in. Be prepared...I took a lot of pics! I loved meeting the black cats, Edgar and Pluto, that live there. RIP to Pluto who escorted us through part of our tour of the grounds. I ended my visit with perusing the gift shop, where I spent most of that time sniffing candles. I finally settled on The Black Cat candle and few other goodies. read more

It is a very interesting and creepy place. As soon as I came in through the door, the creepiest black cat with the meanest green eyes greeted us. I had an instant creep. Turns out there isn't 1 but several black cats, of which one of them jumped at me in the room with his writing table, what looks like a crypt etc. Almost made me lose my soul. There isn't too much to see, but it provides interesting insights including the few words he came up with, his handwritten letter begging for money, his critique turned enemy writing s**t about him when he himself is the biggest creep who slept with his 40 day old corpse wife... lots of weird things.. Visited the Poe museum today. We actually got in on the guided tour lead by Layna. She was an excellent tour guide and informed us basically of Poe's entire life. The tour involves Three different buildings with many artifacts from his life. The cost is $12.00 and they have different events in the evening "The unhappy hour". This is a small museum with 3 houses/places to visit. All the houses are airconditioned. No need for reservations. Went on a hot Sunday afternoon. Letters, books, furnitures, things belonging to Edgar Allan Poe and those related to him are on display. There's a nice garden at the middle with Poe's bust. The gift shop sells books, magnets, toys, posters, shirts, etc. Would not say it's a must see but if you have an hour to spare, you can learn a lot about his life and interesting facts. read more

If you have any interest in Edgar Allen Poe, this is a must-visit! The museum is comprised of several buildings surrounding a serene interior courtyard which display a fairly astounding number of personal artifacts belonging to Poe, his sister, his wife and other family members. There are also some pop culture artifacts and modern artworks on display. In particular, there is a rather fine daguerreotype of Poe and a letter from Poe to his famous contemporary Washington Irving. Tours are self-guided, so you can take as long as you like in the exhibits or just take a seat in the garden and make friends with the black cats who reside at the museum. There is a well-stocked gift store with everything from plushies and children's books to whiskey glasses and scholarly tomes on Poe. Admission fee with discounts for students and seniors. There is a very small parking lot at the side and additional parking on the street and in a nearby public lot. During special events it is recommended to purchase tickets in advance. This is the museum for me. I'm detailed oriented so it's easy to get overwhelmed with sights and info but the Poe museum is Just the right size. Great information and interesting artifacts that paint an informative picture of Poe's life. Only suggestion would be to have more direction as far as where to start reading in each room to have some chronological order. Liked that there was a free audio tour- only wish I had brought my airpods . read more

Twelve bucks for an adult, six for a kid. not really a whole lot to do here. there is a place to read in one of the buildings, probably the best part of it. be careful letting your children walk around, there is a cat that will scratch you and also propaganda inside the library. read more

It is a small museum, but a must visit for any Poe fan! The main part of the museum is located inside the oldest residential building in Richmond - although Poe himself never lived there! There are two other buildings with additional exhibits, as well as some beautiful gardens with friendly cats. The gift shop has a ton of Poe goodies. For any literary fan, goth, or history lover, you should check it out. They do have a small gravel parking lot, too. read more

On our way home from Washington, D.C., we stopped at Poe Museum. I've always been an avid fan and thought how it'll be great to visit his museum. GPS took us directly to it. It's in a great location. There's a private parking lot for the museum. You can also park on the street if the parking lot's full if permitted. The museum itself comprises of the oldest house in Richmond, two more small buildings and a garden surrounded by the buildings. The ambience itself brings you back to the bygone era. The staff at the souvenir shop's friendly and helpful. The souvenir shop's stocked with everything Poe. I ended up buying a refrigerator magnet. I buy magnets of places I've been. Glad we stopped and paid homage to this great writer and poet. I'm just saddened by his tragic life. It was crowded when we went and felt rushed. It would be nice to come back during weekday so we can spend more time. read more

Nice way to kill some time in the city. The museum offers a self guided tour that takes about 45 minutes if you listen to the entire audio tour. I suggest you bring earbuds if you want to listen to the audio tour. There are 3 different buildings to look at. They all have displays about Poe's life. This is a refresh of my last review of this very cool spot. (Which, by the way, happened to be my 1000th review on yelp!) So, yup. Still cool. Still macabre. Still interesting. Much busier this time. Same sweet cats, Edgar and Pluto. And if you read my last review, I am happy to say no harm was done by the door that maybe should not have been latched during the construction project. I really needed another two hours here to get the full experience, but we were on a tight schedule and had to keep it moving. Love love love this place. Don't worry. I'll be back evermore. read more

My sister and I came here with a friend on a whim after dropping off another friend. The lady working inside the ticket office/gift shop was friendly and helpful. There is an audio tour option, but we mostly navigated without audio. We wandered the buildings and grounds for a little more than an hour. Everything was well kept, and I would definitely return, as I didn't get to read a majority of the plaques. Reading about Poe's life and death was eye-opening. The black cats around the grounds were used to people being around. I snagged a photo of one. (I had to open the door for the cat, and another came in right after.) The gift shop was lots of fun, and we found goodies to bring back home for family. read more

Museum is a great stop while heading somewhere else, Williamsburg in our case. Only $10 for about an hour of time walking around the beautiful grounds and reading some really interesting history. As a history teacher myself, I found everything super fascinating. I will say, though... the staff does not add to the experience. They're awkward and won't make eye contact with you; willing you to move on without so much as a quick chat. As a mom of an autistic child, I always like to give the benefit of the doubt... but when the entire staff is like that, it begins to detract from the experience because you feel like you're being hosted by some awkward teenagers, when in fact they're all grown adults. BUT, don't let that stop you even if you have the faintest interest in Poe! read more

This was a fun visit when I was I was in Richmond. The Poe Museum is a small museum dedicated to the life of Edgar Allan Poe, a famous Virginian and even more famous poet and dark writer. For all things spooky or just a fan of Poe and in the area, it's worth a visit. We visited on a Saturday in the late morning and the place was actually pretty busy, with many other groups checking out the museum. Admission was only $9 and the tour is self-led, as you're handed a map and are off your way. Since the museum is small, it was easy to get around and navigate, following the map and order of the buildings. There are three small exhibits and a garden. Inside the museum, you'll learn more about Poe's childhood, upbringing in Virginia, career and writings. There's even a black cat that will walk around the grounds, which just adds to the mystery of Poe. You can take pictures inside and spend however long you'd like. Though, it will only take you an hour max to visit. Free street parking was plenty. There's a bookstore and gift shop for some souvenirs. Glad to have checked out and learned more about Edgar Allan Poe while in Richmond. read more

I was surprised to find this museum on Yelp since I always associated Poe with Baltimore. Turns out that he moved around a lot throughout his life and his time in Richmond (childhood to young adulthood) was the longest he had lived in a single place. **There is a free audio tour of the museum on their website that you can access on your phone. If you plan to do so, don't forget to bring your ear buds! Accessibility: there is an accessible museum entrance from the main street but it doesn't lead through the gift shop where you pay for admission and it needs to be opened by a staff member. I would call ahead if you are planning to visit with a wheelchair or stroller. There is a step up into the museum buildings but I saw a portable ramp, which I'm assuming museum staff use for guests with mobility-related access needs. I would also call ahead if you're planning to visit with a service animal, as there are two rescue cats that roam the museum courtyard. Service animals are of course allowed but they note on their website that they appreciate advanced notice to warn their felines. I don't recall how accessible the restroom was. The museum has a small off-street parking lot next to it but you may need to plan for street parking. You enter the gift shop where you pay for your admission. There are restrooms behind the checkout area and there are doors to the outside towards the back of the hallway, in case you need to use the restroom while coming from the other end of the building. Otherwise, you'll exit the gift shop through the doors behind you (to your left if you're facing the gift shop street entrance) and then make a loop through the various historic buildings that house artifacts from different stages of Poe's life. I like that it's organized that way--not just chronologically but separate building for different life stages. The buildings are quite small and it can get cramped but there are lots of signs to read while you're waiting to get an up close view of the artifacts. Keep an eye out for the crow stickers on the walls with fun facts too! I don't think there are any other museums dedicated to Poe in the US/the world--just statues and monuments. Even if you aren't familiar with his works, it's a fascinating insight into the culture and society of the times. For example, did you know that the profession of acting was looked down upon and women who were frail and dying due to tuberculosis were seen as beautiful/trendy? Lots of the artifacts and placards are on higher shelves/behind glass displays and the building spaces can get quite cramped so this may be best for older children rather toddlers/young children. The building on Poe's young adulthood has a staircase from his actual home that leads up to a second story reading area. It has lots of books related to Poe and his works (including children's books) and also some modern Poe-themed artworks. There is a chest in the corner where you can take a poem written by a visitor or leave a poem for another visitor to take. There was a bunch and some were quite funny. Don't forget to keep an eye out for Edgar and Pluto, two black rescue cats that roam the courtyard of the museum! They are friendly to pet but I wouldn't disturb them if they're relaxing/sunbathing. There was a book in the gift shop featuring them and other local rescue animals (including dogs, horses, birds, and turtles!). read more

Visiting the Poe Museum was our anniversary activity this year and it was interesting and enjoyable even for people like us who have only really had a peripheral admiration for Poe. This museum is thoughtfully designed and gives the feeling of an original Poe residence (it is not). Lots of tokens of his lifetime and comprehensive placards detailing the rise and demise of this macabre man provide a real understanding of the lasting impact his works have had on every generation during and since his death. We love meeting the two resident black cats, Pluto and Raven (I think??) and visiting the gift shop afterwards for a 1000 piece puzzle on the theme of Poe's writings, as well as Poe inspired magnetic poetry. Highly recommend this museum to ALL. read more

Ok, I was a initially a tad disappointed because I thought it would be bigger. But after reflecting back on my visit, I would rate this as 4 or 5 stars. First of all, it is very reasonably priced! $7 per person with a AAA membership, $9 without. Children are cheaper, but I can't recall how much. The museum is organized by rooms according to different periods of Poe's life. If you have your phone, there is a step by step audio tour guide that you can listen to as you explore the museum. Each room is clearly marked by number so you know what part of the audio tour guide to play. There are two black cats roaming around the outdoor courtyard, both very friendly, and both add to the ambiance. The gift shop is small, but has a variety of Poe themed items to choose from: I went with a very cool Poe coffee mug. Pro tip: As opposed to the audio tour guide (or in addition to it), look up "The Grimm Life Collective" on YouTube and find their video on the Poe Museum. This is a great video that walks you through the museum and points out the most interesting artifacts. I enjoyed this video better than the official audio guide! We were in town for a soccer tournament and had a few hours to kill, so we drive 25 minutes to get to the Poe Museum. I'm glad we did and would definitely visit again next time we are in the area. read more

Finally made it to the Poe museum. My daughter aka, Mini me, has discovered the loveliness of the macabre genre. So, we made a day trip here to Richmond. I wasn't sure what to expect, but you walk in to the gift shop/main room filled with all things Poe. After purchasing tickets, you grab a map and go explore the 3 smaller buildings at your own pace. There is an audio option, but we skipped it as many of the objects and photos had very descriptive information near/next to it. I was really surprised on the back story of Edgar Allen Poe and all the people in his life I didn't know about (I'm pre-WWW.com when I first started reading his books). The museum has some really interesting items of Edgar Allen Poe in it's possession- like his childhood bed. I really enjoyed the back stories surrounding including why his middle "name" is "Allen". For the price, I thought it was fun for fans of Poe. My daughter loved the 2 black-ish cats that roam the garden. The whole experience took about an hour. read more

We had a blast on our trip to the Poe Museum. Our entire Richmond trip revolved around making it here and I'm so glad we made it a priority. I was in Richmond for business and had a couple of hours to spare before heading to the airport. We discovered the Poe Museum was close by and decided to check it out. It's small, a perfect size to get through in less than an hour, 3 buildings and a courtyard garden. You don't need to be a huge Edgar Allen Poe fan but most people are atleast aware of his work to be able to appreciate the history and enjoy references to some of his work like The Raven. Plus I personally do like visiting historical sites. Poe didn't actually live in this historic building but did live in Richmond. Though there is some of his own furniture along with many artifacts inside. The house is the oldest standing structures in Richmond. We were there midweek with no crowds, actually for a while we were the only ones there. I'm assuming now with COVID they have restrictions on numbers of visitors inside etc. Nice spot to spend some time and maybe pick up a bit of knowledge and appreciation for Poe. read more

There were several personal artifacts that were owned by Poe which was interesting. This was our first time in Richmond and we needed local places to visit in the days leading to GalaxyCon. My boyfriend chose this museum, and granted I'm not the most knowledgeable of Poe's works, it was nice to learn more about his life, his place in history, and to see his and his loved ones' belongings. Our visit lasted about an hour. You start at the gift shop where they give you a map to follow. I loved that the rooms were well-air-conditioned and that the overall experience was not overwhelming. Be sure you visit the reading room, spin the wheel of death by the restrooms to see how you'd die in a Poe story, and keep an eye out for the two adorable black cats roaming the property (which we did see). ‍ ‍ read more

They have a nicely organized gift shop where you enter and pay the admission fee. The museum itself consists of several small houses that you can wander through at your own pace. The interiors of the museum were kind of gritty to be honest. This isn't the Smithsonian for sure. But it is still a neat experience. We parked a good walking distance in a public paid parking lot and walked to get the the museum. The museum does have clean restrooms. The interior courtyard is a pretty space. Overall I am happy that I visited The Poe Museum. I am a resident of Baltimore, Maryland where we are steeped in all things Poe. And I was also a goth in my teen years. Given all of these things, The Poe Museum felt required for me. However this is a once and done for me. I fully support what this little museum is doing. I hope they freshen up the exhibit spaces a little bit for future visitors. read more
