A fairly standard selection of pints, the black sheep was definitely a good choice as it's brewed just up the road and this kept me going while I nattered with the barman. The aforementioned fish and chips were well worth the wait and were super awesome - light batter, tasty homemade chips and lovely mushy peas - at £6.50 each it was a really good choice and great value. Although the restaurant looked a bit dated it is home to an award winning chef from Alsace/Harrogate and definitely has left me with a desire to go back and try the full menu next time I'm in the area. *extra point - there is a little convenience store next door which is run by the pub - open 9-12 each morning*

The internal decor of the place might be considered a little tired, but it felt warm and welcoming. I really couldn't decide what to choose from the menu, it's your standard pub fayre, but I like standard pub fayre - when it's done well. In the end I ordered Sirloin steak and I'm glad I did! It was one of the best steaks I've had in quite a while; cooked perfectly (I ordered rare) and accompanied by really great home cooked chips, mushroom and deliciously crispy onion rings. The meat is supplied from a farm only a couple of miles away, it seems most of the ingredients are locally sourced where possible. The portion size was generous to say the least. Next time I'm in the area I'll definitely be calling in again for a pint and something else off the menu.

My wife and I stayed in the Whernside room at Yoredale House on 10th December on our road trip up…read moreto Scotland, and the welcoming hosts Steve and Sandra made this a totally delightful experience. Make no mistake, this is no ordinary bed and breakfast; the room was large and beautifully furnished with a huge comfortable bed and a modern en-suite with a real man-sized shower cubicle. There were the usual facilities for making tea and coffee, and the room featured a combined TV and DVD player with a good variety of DVDs freely available to watch too, and everything had an air of quality and great attention to detail. I personally appreciate things like free samples of shower gel and shampoo, fluffy thick towels, heavyweight curtains, a comfortable chair, homely soft furnishings, etc., to give a feeling of being in a relaxed atmosphere. But perhaps the best thing about Yoredale is the food. Sandra is an excellent cook and the dinner and breakfast in the pretty tearooms at the front was simply fantastic. The meals are prepared from a lot of local produce and as with the rooms it was provided with great attention to detail; even the bread rolls and the morning toast was from (delicious) home-baked bread. The quality of the cuisine cannot be faulted and would not be out of place in a 5-star hotel. There are also a lot of locally produced jams, preserves and chutneys, postcards, and other souvenirs for sale. The value is quite amazing too, all this for £60 per night and £28 for a mouth-watering dinner for two including wine. I would recommend this bed and breakfast without reservation wherever it was, except this is also in one of the loveliest parts of the Dales and would make a perfect base for exploring this most beautiful of locations. The one point I would make is that being in an older Yorkshire house, the stairs are very steep and may not suit someone with any sort of disability, but this is otherwise one of the best B & Bs we have ever stayed in.

Back then it had a bar…read morebilliards table and the whole concept of pub food, with the exception of a cellophane wrapped ham sandwich or a pickled egg, had yet to be invented, certainly around this area anyway :-) All these years on though the Kenlis is still very much the same as it was back then. The bar billiards table has long since gone, replaced by a pool table, and the pub now serves food, but it still retains a quirky uniqueness as a result of being privately owned and run. There is a pile of board games in the corner of one room and newspapers and magazines are available to browse, novelty teapots adorn the walls and you can buy chocolate from behind the bar or jelly beans and sweets from a vending machine. There is a children's play area outside and it is also a hotel with a few rooms at reasonable rates. The food is inexpensive, we didn't dine but the menu included standard pub fare; steak pie, roast dinners, burgers, steak etc. A couple of cask beers were on including one from the local Bowland Brewery which was very pleasant. It is a big imposing building seemingly in the middle of nowhere, in fact it was kind of well known for being difficult to find in the days before satellite navigation :-) It is also close to the canal and there is a visitor mooring for a couple of boats by the bridge ( Bridge 54) or alternatively it is possible to moor on the towpath although it can be a little overgrown at times.

We were sat in the back bar by one of the speakers. They turned the music down for us as it was a bit loud (80s music though ). A good variety of choices- between the 5 of us we ordered two Crown Pies, the lamb and two chicken Caesar salads. The meat pie was wonderful - if you eat meat- this is a must- juicy steak, delicious gravy and flaky yet crisp pastry. The lamb was delicious too. The Caesar salad though was odd- it certainly did not have a garlicky caesar dressing- very little lettuce and I don't think it was romaine. The chicken was cubed and soaked in the dressing. It wasn't bad- but I would call it a "Crown Salad" . Beer and wine were good and we all had a relaxing time. We weren't rushed and again the service was good.
