As I went to The Peacock during the Northcote Festival it's difficult to judge the normal ambiance and vibe of the place. The day of the Festival was one of the first truly magnificent days of early spring so the ample beer garden was packed with 20-somethings enjoying the rays. The beer was served in plastic cups which is always a negative but understandable on a day as busy as this and with plenty of bench seating out back and a DJ starting to spin beats in the early afternoon the party was really kicking off. A great place for a sunny day.

It should go without saying this is a SENSATIONAL craft beer venue but I thought I'd mention it to make a point. Whenever in the venue you chose to drink you have an option of drinking from all bars. The selection of craft beers are sensational! This selection is not the case for the food sadly. There is the lovely restaurant at the back, the original pub part and the (no longer new) craft bar where the drive in bottle-o used to be. To me, as a customer, the oddest concept of this is the snobbery between the craft kitchen and the original kitchen. You can't order from both and eat in one area - they demand you order from the one you are in only. I get it from a kitchen point of view but for me the biggest issue with that is that the pub part doesn't have fish and chips because that's a fav of my husband whilst I adore the pub part steak. I would give them 5/5 if I could order food from either kitchen - just as I can with the beer.

However, despite it being so close to the railway station doesn't necessarily make it any good. In fact it stands out from many of the other pubs in the area in that it is your typical suburban pub with a gaming lounge and a sports bar (as well as a burger joint, but I'm not sure if it is actually part of the pub or just leasing one of the rooms). Okay, they do have specials, but the selection really isn't all that great. There are actually much better pubs in the local area.

There I was, cycling back from a festival at organic, fair trade Mecca CERES when a familiar feeling struck: junk food craving. I needed a parma now. So I sat there expecting some diminutive parma that just by dint of being a parma gave all parmas a bad name with its soggy diminution. How wrong I was. For the Albion Charles Hotel's parma was as good as any I've had at a Fitzroy gastropub, as good as any I've had anywhere. This is a bona fide awesome deal. Ok, there's a predominance of gambling machines and pokies and men who look like they're addicted to booze and women who look like they haven't seen the light of day because of a reliance on pokies, but there's also the parma deal. And a warning sign in the carpark that the Albion's patrons must stop leaving their children in their cars while they go inside for what I can only presume is a parma.

Okay, that is usually the case on a Friday night or a Saturday afternoon, but then again I have been here on Mondays and it has still had its fair share of people. The thing with this pub is that it has one of those great beer gardens, a huge screen of the footy (and is one of the best pubs to watch the football at), and some great beers on tap. Yep, I like this pub.

The $10 lunch menu is great value, changes each week and comes with a softie included. For those after something a little more filling or meaty, there is a permanent $15 steak fries and salad for lunch, and a la carte options. If you haven't been, you're missing out. For the post-work barfly there is a spirit's special in Thursday, and $3 pots on Fridays. Evening dining also fantastic. The large beer garden comes with super-sized Jenga, and some throw-the-beanbag-through-the-hole frustrating exercise. Good for those like to look a little silly while getting messy with the varied crowd watching on. Two pool table and an open fore make the bar the perfect retreat after meals if you want to continue your session. Staff usually lovely, but the gentleman who I assume is the manager can be less than inspiring as a host - don't expect too many smiles, but don't let him put you off.

The thing I love about this place is the huge beer garden out the back, which even has undercover areas for times when it is pelting down with rain. They even have a barbeque, but I doubt you can just come here with your own meat and start cooking it up. The inside is pretty cool as well, and they even have trivia nights (not that I have ever participated in one). Oh, I also recently discovered that they also have a happy hour, which is also pretty cool. I've got to come here more often.

Strong local presence to take advantage of the lunch specials on offer while chilling with the Sunday arvo game. Quite a few of us got the Parma, I had the torpedo calamari out of curiosity (so named of the shape! Felt a bit silly having to google it). The meals were generous in serving size, especially considering the price. A good section of craft beers, you can even buy a stein to take home. Not many wines on offer, but it is a beer establishment after all. Big beer garden out the back, also a pool table inside available. Serviceable and fit for purpose as a friendly local.

From the moment you walk in, there's a buzz that makes the place feel alive without being overwhelming. It strikes a great balance between upscale and relaxed, making it perfect for a date night or a fun evening out. The warm lighting and eclectic design add to the charm and make you want to linger. Service was friendly, attentive, and well-paced throughout the night. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, checked in on us at the right moments, and made the whole experience feel effortless and welcoming. Every dish we ordered was excellent -- not a single miss. We started with the Cauliflower & Mozzarella Croquettes, which were crispy on the outside and perfectly creamy inside. The Grilled King Prawns were flavorful and cooked just right, while the Kingfish Ceviche was fresh, bright, and beautifully balanced. The Stracciatella & Heirloom Tomatoes was simple yet outstanding, letting the quality of the ingredients shine. For mains, the Duck Breast was cooked perfectly and full of rich flavor, and the Lamb Backstrap was tender and well-seasoned. The Pecorino & Ricotta Ravioli was comforting and delicate, while the Seafood Linguine stood out with generous portions of seafood and a beautifully balanced sauce. The Honey Glaze Carrots were the perfect side -- sweet, savory, and executed flawlessly. Overall, State of Grace delivers on every level -- ambience, service, and food. An exceptional spot that lives up to the hype, and one we'd absolutely return to on our next visit to Melbourne.
