I went to the Garlic Fest in Bethlehem this past weekend and then went in hunt of Soulbury. When I saw where it was I could not believe it. Nestled in a slightly wooded area and just off the main road, you just might miss it. The exterior reminds me of a cabin. With a welcoming porch and lawn decorations (for sale), it's almost like going to a friend's home. On the porch we found racks of clothes. One rack was full of discounted apparel and other goodies. I did find some supper soft adorable mushroom overalls. Unfortunately, they weren't on sale, but there was nothing that would stop me from buying them! Inside you will find jewelry, paintings, clothing, food items, plants, pots and so many other unique gift items. If you're looking for a CT cutting board to pair with your charcuterie items, look no further. I bought myself the overalls, felted coasters, a squirrel tote and air plants. I have finally found a store as uniques as me. The staff were super helpful. I had to run to my car and I was offered a safe place to stash my stash. They also helped out when I wanted to double check the fit on my overalls. I was guided to their fitting/washroom. I cannot wait to visit again. I'm going to try to hold off for Shop Small Saturday, but I don't think I'll be able to wait that long!

Okay, I wish the 3 star rating said anything but "A-ok!" Because, while this store has some lovely…read moreand unique things, there are two problems: 1. This is a packed-to-the-gills gift shop with a nice selection, everything from kiddie items to women's clothing and jewelry, to the full gamut of the "Home Goods" type of great little things for the home. And even specialty items for men, BUT--they have one rather major flaw: THEY DO NOT GIFT WRAP (!!!) WHAT KIND OF A GIFT SHOP DOESN'T GIFT WRAP FOR YOU? The whole reason for going to a privately-owned gift shop like this, rather than Home Goods, Marshall's, TJ's, or even online, etc, is to get personalized service, and that SHOULD include gift wrapping--at least, for as long as I've been going to gift shops (and that's quite a long time, lol). If I'm going to pay regular retail price, then I expect better--gift wrap and all. Tsk, tsk, Queen Street! You can do better, especially at Christmas! 2. Though she seems to try to contain herself, the lady up front is always a little cranky. Not pleasant. :/

ORIGIN: Alaska Company opened August 2024 by Julie Hunt, a…read morelocal resident and salon owner who lived in Alaska as a child. LOCATION: The shop is located in an independent cement block building along Southbury's main thoroughfare. CONCEPT: The owner is apparently looking to bring spirit of Alaska, her childhood home, to Connecticut, her current home. There are a few items from Alaska, many more referencing Alaska or perceived as representing Alaska (such as love of coffee and fishing). SELECTION: As I walked around the shop I was mentally trying to make sense of the concept, as with each turn around a shelf there was a new collection of items on display. Among the collections I saw, there were a variety of seeds, dog collars, coffee mugs, tee shirts, fishing lures, and coffee. I left with the notion that the shop might fill a gap in Southbury by being a destination for men to shop for outdoor items and gifts.
