Excellent little place, friendly service and the Lamb Dopiaza was superb. I reccomend it on that dish alone!

The staff and food were pretty good, but we weren't very happy with the butter chicken. I've tried…read moreseveral different recipes in my day, and cooked far more than I've eaten out, and I can say that hands-down this was NOT butter chicken. Butter chicken is supposed to have a cream, butter, and tomato base that's loaded with spices, onions, and garlic, while this dish WAS loaded with butter it didn't have any of the other components, or even the right spices, and the sauce was made with a very grainy coconut flour. It was really very odd. I ordered the lamb vindaloo, it was pretty much the most excellent version I've ever had of this dish. I asked them to make it spicy for me, and they warned me that it would be very spicy, and I was pleasantly surprised at how slowly the spiciness built up and then maintained at the same level, it was really nice. American spicy pretty much either kicks you in the teeth or builds to the point that the level is intolerably high for most, but Indian heat builds and then plateaus, which makes the experience more pleasant and less like a food challenge. Our starters were good, we had the poppadoms, samosas, and onion bajis. I'm not a fan of the mint sauce, but the onion salad and mixed pickle were great. Overall, I'd say that this place is good and I'd both dine here again and recommend it to my friends.

The decor was modern and clean, more swish cafe than backwater Indian. The staff were OK. I think that there was only two onincluding the chef. I think that reflects the rural location, and only added about 10-20 mins on our visit, which was fine with me. The food was good, I had (sorry cannot remember the name) a korma type dish with bananas. I have had a similar dish before and the bananas were part of the dish, so was a little disappointed when the dish arrived and there was just cold chopped banana on top of the dish. My friends ordered a hot hot dish, and both of them said it was good, although I think when they say hot on the menu they mean it!! There was a lot of steam coming out their ears! Reasonably priced, good food, and a good location. Worth a visit if in the area, but I guess not worth a detour!

The Taj Mahal - Exquisite Bangladeshi & Indian Cuisine - is by far the best restaurant of…read moreMachynlleth indeed! I would say it is better than all of the Indian places in Aberystwyth, and I have never been to an Indian restaurant in North Wales. There must be some good ones, too somewhere up in the north of the country. In England my favourite city is Leicester for an Indian. The owners are very friendly guys, so is the staff. It is a take-away place, too but take-away is not for me really. I like to enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant itself. The interior looks Indian. There are some round tables and unlike too many Indian restaurants in Britain the tables are not too close to one another. Often there is Indian music being played. In the past we have often enjoyed a good meal there on birthdays, Valentine's Day, and we take friends and relatives to the restaurant. The price is okay, too. One cannot complain really. A chicken tikka mosala costs 7.95. The menu is so varied and I often do not know what to choose from. I simply like everything. They do oriental starters, tandoori dishes, specialities, balti bhoona, tandoori special bhoona, balti dopiaza, tandoori special dopiaza, balti jalfrezi, tandoori special jalfrezi, balti pathia dish, balti rogan josh, tandoori special rogan, balti sag walla, malaya, korma, dhansak, madras, vindaloo -ohh, a little bit hot but nice!!, curry, biryani dishes. There's a lot of vegetable side dishes to have and rice, of course. I love the peshwari nan with coconut but the garlic nan is good, too. Do not forget the chutney and pickle tray. I say Cheers with a good Indian Kingfisher beer!
