We went here once on a weekday and it was fine, the service was good, prices were good, food was alright. So, we decided to go back on a Saturday, and, needless to say, after this experience we will not be returning.
It was a cloudy summer day, there was a breeze but it was warm out, and still pleasant to sit outside in the fresh air. The pub inside was quite busy so we opted to eat at the nice outdoor tables with a sea view.
After selecting our table number, we went inside to order. No menus to be found anywhere, all the tables only had drink menus, and for food there were only chalk-written ones up on the wall. The queue area was quite crowded so we didn't really have time to be choosy. We decided to just go with 2 chicken starters since the girl at the register said there were no other crispy chicken options. And 2 orders of chips. I also ordered a half pint of Guinness and my flatmate had a tonic water.
I don't know the name of the girls on the registers, but they were both overweight girls in their mid 20's with dark blonde hair. It was just after 2pm on 10 June. Our first encounter was with the girl on the register on our right hand side. I placed the order, she seemed to have gotten it down, and my flatmate then added his drink and paid. We waited for the guiness but it turned out she had forgotten to add it, so he had to pay again before we got the drink.
Then we went outside to wait at our nice table. The food arrived, but it turned out that she had also only taken down 1 order of chips. We asked nicely about the other chips, and the girl serving us curtly stated that we would have to pay if we wanted more. Well, obviously, but she could have been more polite about it! But we were hungry and didn't want to place an order for more food and wait again, so we just shared the small portion of chips and ate our small starters. We were still sort of hungry because we had to split the chips, but it would have been enough food if they hadn't forgotten to take down the order properly.
So we went in again to order more food. After ordering with our table number again, this time at the register on our left with the other girl, she rudely informed us that we would not be served outside. I asked why, not rudely, but it was an odd thing to say. The girl on the right then chimed in repeating this, and the girl on the left stated 'they had had complaints about the wind making the food cold and so they would not serve food outside'. I'm not even kidding. We had literally just had our starters out there, and we wouldn't even ask for more food if they hadn't forgotten half of them!
Now if no food in a gentle breeze is their policy, then it's ridiculous one. It wasn't a cold wind out and it was really quite pleasant at the sea view outdoor tables. My flatmate didn't want to eat inside the noisy pub, and I like to enjoy a cigarette with my drinks. But beyond this, and what really got me, was the two girls were so very rude about the whole thing! I felt like we were being bullied by them, because they sort of ganged up on us shouting about the wind when I politely asked why we couldn't eat outside. I don't know if it's because I have an american accent and they don't like americans, but they really seemed quite standoffish and aggressive from the minute the first one had forgotten the drink. So we said nevermind and left right away.
In any case, if you turn up here and there's a rather hefty girl with dark blonde hair at the register, run! These staff members were just rude, big bullies, and we won't be coming back for that reason. Otherwise we would have still considered it on non-breezy days, lol. read more
