They hold a monthly or bi-monthly rotating exhibit. It's a really beautiful place to view art and appreciate local artisans.

This is a small art gallery in Raton, New Mexico located next to the train station. They provide an ever-changing selection of artwork throughout the year. Entering the gallery, most days you're immediately greeted by the wonderful Gilbert. He's been around a long time, has stories to tell, and is an incredible delight to speak to. If nothing else, you'll leave the gallery smiling if only have spoken to Gilbert. However! There's the art work, of course. Like I mentioned, with different shows throughout the year, you'll always see something different. "Women of New Mexico" or an event featuring the artwork from children in Raton. Always something different. The artwork can be that of southwestern paintings, perhaps photography, or even sculptures. It's always changing! Prices are very modest and often affordable. In fact, there's a gift shop with t-shirts, jewelry, and other novelties and collectibles. This wonderful art gallery in a small little town is very much worth a visit! read more

Many of my friends in the Southwest had told me that, if I was anywhere near Raton, I needed to visit the Old Pass Gallery. They were right. I loved the diverse and well-selected offering of Southwest and native art. And the director could not have been more helpful and more knowledgeable about the featured artists, their work and other local caches for art treasures around the Raton area and beyond. This is a "must visit" for everyone who loves art or who just loves life in general. read more

History

Established in 1988.

The Raton Arts and Humanities Council, Inc. was founded January 1988, and became the designated City of Raton arts council in August 1991. The council's programs are designed to meet several goals and objectives: one of the most important is to further the development, learning and appreciation of the arts in recognition of the fact that the arts are important to the well being of a community and its citizens. It has become increasingly recognized across the country that a dynamic cultural atmosphere is of economic value to a community, providing an attraction for visitors and tourists as well as prospective businesses and residents. This in turn inherently increases the monetary and human values of the arts. Other goals include enriching quality of life, enhancing educational programs, fostering creativity, self-esteem building, and increasing appreciation of all artistic disciplines.

Walter and Fumio, the owners, were delightful to work with. We purchased two of Fumio's abstract works and we could not love them more than we do. They are a treat for the eyes and have completely transformed the room that they are displayed in. Fumio Sawa is a masterful artist and his abstracts are stunning!, especially when you learn they are done by hand. And they are a bargain for this quality of work. We also have purchased two of his prints of birds that we love every time we see them. They too were quite affordable and the framing was impeccable. In addition, they have an art glass collection that is museum- quality. We purchased a piece of Venetian glass as a gift and the recipient was thrilled with it. If you are in the Trinidad area, we highly recommend visiting Fumio Sawa Fine Art if you love original and outstanding artwork.
