After…read morechecking into the Morgan around the corner, I made my way over to this exchange and converted the money I needed for my time in Dublin before moving on to Northern Ireland. The man behind the counter was courteous and professional, carefully counting the bills to ensure I had the correct amount. When I returned to Dublin towards the end of our trip, I finally converted the sterling I had been carrying since Derry to euro, since apparently, Galway had no places that exchanged period. I didn't realize that -- and that's the case with any exchange place. The only thing you can't do is convert coins. So unless you want to save them from reminiscing about your time in the country, make sure to spend the coinage. But I have had good experiences the two times I used the exchange, so no complaints from my end.

They state that they don't charge any fees, which technically is true. But you know, a business needs to make money. So, there will always be a high and low average for conversion rates for the day. You'll be offered the rate that leaves the largest margin for them to be able to take a cut out of. Which for what I need, totally fair. Even if you're just walking in, book the conversion online on your phone first because that's how you'll avoid any additional fees.

It is located on Grafton St next to the Whiskey Museum and is inside the tourist office. The rates they gave between dollars and euros was equivalent to what I was given in the States when I exchanged money at a Chase bank. The person here was quick and courteous. The sign inside the store says this place does not charge any commission. I'm thankful it was located here because it saved us a lot of running around the city.
AIB

I always have had pleasant experiences with them. The problem is AIB is too big and ugly now. The simple facts are: * Customer for 11 years. * As a student worked some summers for them. * Repaid any loans I had with them on time. * Debt free. * Have a job. Applied for a credit card. Denied. Why? "Well Annie (I loathe it when strangers think that we are cool enough to be on first name terms) it's because of your banking history." "Well Tom, what the hell are you smoking? I have a perfect record." "Yeah well we will have to wait another 6 months once we are happy with you incomings." "I have always had incomings Tom." "Well Annie I just am not comfortable giving you a card." "Well Tom are you comfortable with losing a loyal customer." "Of course not Annie." "You don't sound too bothered Tom. Is it because I am not 50 million in debt and colluding with politicians?" "Now Annie don't be like that." "No Tom, screw you, I'm closing my account." And the current bank I am dealing with are wonderful and have the smarts to see that I will make them money unlike AIB. Joke.

However…read moreregardless of their crimes (ahem alleged), they are a necessary evil though for the majority of working citizens. Perched in such a central location, this AIB is naturally a busy one but there seems to be a large, efficient staff to cope with the demand. The queues are not unbearable, even at lunchtime. There is a swift deposit facility and ATMs both inside and outside the branch. AIB provides phone and internet banking and are quick to act on swiped or lost credit card incidents. Definitely a convenient location for south-side shoppers, students and worker bees.

This has been my branch since my first post-communion lodgement. In the last year or so however the staff have changed and very single time I go in here I leave in a foul mood and vowing to change bank. The staff are incredibly rude, decidedly unhelpful and I've never once felt them to be capable to human emotion ranging past a level of 2. My banking business is generally simple lodgements and Currency exchange, I genuinely dread ever having to go in there for anything fractionally more complex. Avoid at all costs.

The building was a very modern and striking design and would not fit well at all in the really old village.
