They let my Herman go into the wild only 3 weeks after taking him from my home where he was safe and sound for 4 years!

They let my Herman go after only 3 weeks in the sanctuary!! He was with me safe and sound. He was fed live mice, fish, grasshoppers ect. He never was taught how to hunt on his own and they just let him go! Poor Herman! He was probably terrified! They kept him only 3 weeks when they let him go into the wild!! They didn't even call to invite us down to see him released! I called and spoke with a lady that promised to call me back to see if they had recorded his release but never even bothered to call me back! I'm devasted! She even told me that owls can live up to 20 years in captivity but only 5 years in the wild!!! He was safe with me and was happy!! They took him to release him to die years before necessary!

There were more hawks than I expected. The staff were nice and the grounds were well kept. The song bird area was a little disappointing because it was pretty much just pigeons and morning doves that were visible inside the enclosure.

    This chic was a cutie.

Love this place, this is my 4th time since may going here. Actually, this time I took a exchange student with me from Ukraine. What a beautiful memory it will make her and I did buy a owl charm for her to keep. This time, I bought a membership through Groupon. I can't wait to go back! Also the student really loves it!

This is a fantastic family friendly find. If you're interested in birds I have to recommend. We made a very leisurely visit here. Since the weather was nice, around 75 degrees, we enjoyed the the fact that it wasn't all inside. Actually most of it is outside. So if your visiting during inclement weather, dress appropriately. Some of the sanctuary is free, but since it's so affordable why not do it all. There were two family bathrooms with a baby changing table in at least one of them. There was also a kids exploration room near the entrance. This room had a few toys and I think the main draw was a two foot square table with bones and leaves on it. I really enjoyed seeing an owl up close just before walking outside. I think all the animals (birds) had names and a brief history of how the bird was acquired. Spoiler: Unfortunately, many of them were injured by humans. One of the more interactive features of this sanctuary was a walk in cage. You can pay a small fee to feed the birds special a special diet. If you want to do this, I suggest you ask for advice /techniques to get the birds close to you. I noticed they are quite close to finishing a new building to house new birds. I didn't confirm this, but I can make an educated guess. The trails seem to be mostly in wetlands so be prepared for uninvited bugs flying around your head. There was an extensive wooden walkway built to keep you out of almost all the mud. But, there might be a few locations that need advanced navigation, aka: mini detour.

Reasons why OBS is worth five stars: 1) free admission (although donations are welcome) 2) friendly volunteers/staff that are super nice and eager to talk to you 3) very well maintained facility with clean restrooms and a little gift shop 4) you can walk inside an aviary and feed birds (make sure you buy the feed cups) 5) great, well maintained trails that are easy but enjoyable (about ~3miles in total) 6) educational - I'm a former science teacher and learned a great deal about the different hawks and owls around North America 7) beautiful gardens/wild flowers and native birds along the trails that you can spot if you watch and listen 8) there is a pet/imprinted chicken inside the visitors center that is quite fun to pet/interact with 9) excellent place to take kids, if I were a kid I'd love this place 10) close to Mansfield but a pleasant drive out in the country areas I'd highly recommend a visit to the OBS. They are even open on Sunday afternoons which is awesome. Me and the hubby spent alittle over an hour wandering around the aviary and the trails. A great, inexpensive afternoon!

Our visit was mostly the gift shop and grocery store. The grocery store was a great stop for snacks. They had some delicious pies. At least the cheese and blackberries one I had was delicious. And since the crust is great, I would imagine they were solid choices. They had a nice selection of Amish popcorn and maple treats too. The gift shop is large and has a good selection of items. The yard decor and patio furniture were all fairly impressive. Some things were even Buckeyes themed! The leather goods were the other highlight. I thought the rucksacks were great and had me wishing I could take a hobbit adventure But, the highlight for my sister was a real/ nice belt that she is excited about. My highlight was the pecan turtle I had for dessert. It's a great spot in Amish country and the service was very pleasant.

Although it is fun, it is hard to wrestle the bucket back when you're trying to drive on to the next animals. These animal are big and they know that if your car window is up, they will walk on. If your window is down, they will stick their entire head in the window. They have over 500 animals including zebras, giraffes, buffalo, deer, pigs, llamas, and even have the very cute Scotch Highland cattle. The drive through part is not short and you have to drive slow because of the animals. It is worth the money. Fair warning, your car will get dirty. There is a farmhouse on the premises where they sell some desserts. We went during the fall and they had a small pumpkin patch and a stack of hay bales to climb on. We also had a nice little meal from their food tent. We will be back!

The ride starts at a barn and they lead you through the animal area. Plenty of food is given to feed the animals. You make stops along the way to feed the animals from the wagon. Afterwards you can tour an Amish house, barns and other areas of the farm. Inside the house you get a delicious cookie. Educational and fun to explore. Lots of animals to see as well. They have a playground and picnic area as well. So bring some food and spend the day.

While your down there your using a provided map to guide yourself around and match the corresponding areas ( Ex; A to A or 1-1 ) We went after it had just rained the night before, so everything was VERY wet. Wear waterproof/walking shoes if you plan on exploring. Be prepared to get dripped on by very cold water coming off nearby rocks, and the "ceiling". Coming down the initial very steep stairs is a beautiful view of different levels of rocks decending into a tunnel/cave where the rest of the cavers are. Tons of puddles all over the ground from collected rain water and the "droplets". Most the areas are about big enough for one person to walk through the tunnel areas at one time, and if your a larger person i DO NOT recommend going down there. Some areas are extremely tight and really only accessible to someone under 4'5 and around 100 pounds or less. (Im 5'4, 140 and some areas i almost got stuck cause it was too tight going through the rocks. It is neat to see though, i dont think id want to do it again as it is just wet rocks and the furthest tunnel was closed from the previous year that occurred from some heavy rain water. (The water collected, over time causing a collapse). So that was kind of a bummer but i get it for safety reasons. The gem mining was fun, definitely loaded with a lot of "gravel" type rocks so that was new for me, Ive only ever had ones with dirt/sand that yield rocks/gems/shark teeth. We found some really interesting gemstones in each tray. The petting zoo was great. I thought it wad Going to be boring and smelly, and i was happily wrong. The goats were adorable, when we came in a baby jumped through the fence and was following our group. And when we came inside the "pen" to pet them he ran back in it was very cute! The deer were a little skittish but very sweet and gentle. The treasure hunt/maze was VERY fun we enjoyed getting different prizes snd trading them within the group.

We had expected to maybe pet a few alpacas, and feed some goats, but we got to go into the pens with alpacas, goats, mini pigs, mini horses and donkeys, KANGAROOS, and a wallaby. There's a free ranging tortoise, and a rather cranky camel as well. All of the animals are super social, and came right up to us for pets, even if we didn't have any food. There are add-on private encounters, but my friend wasn't interested in those, so we just did the tour, and got plenty of dopamine from that!

This is a hobby-esque farm in a smaller town in Ohio. I know one of the biggest complaints about…read morehobby/pay-for-viewing farms is that they aren't enriching for the animals. I do not know enough about animal welfare (and what they need, when enclosed) to note anything about animal welfare, so I won't. I will say that there were a ton of attendants around, and the animals seemed active and with full coats of healthy-looking fur and feathers though. NOTES: -It's definitely outside. Most of the places you'll hang out are somewhat covered for shade/rain purposes. -It's much, much more casual than most zoos I've been in. While you can't necessarily go riding a camel, if the camel comes up to you (and doesn't eat your hat), they're very touchable. -Because this farm is so casual, it's really not a good fit for kids who don't listen. They are animals, and they can peck back if your kid is doing something that annoys them. -Most pathways are mud/gravel. Plan footwear or any accessibility access accordingly. -Most employees we encountered were definitely still in high school. -No big "backstory on the animal" signage anywhere. If you're pulling in kids, you might want to open up articles to answer any questions. OTTER ENCOUNTER: We came for the otter encounter, and I would pay for it again in a heartbeat. It was a private experience, just for the ticket attendees. We sat on the ground (on cushions), and the otters were allowed to run around us. The otters seemed pretty happy about it. They, essentially, treated us like fun new playground furniture, and they crawled pretty much anywhere they wanted. Our guide, Samyra, was absolutely amazing. She was very knowledgeable about the otters, and it's clear she loved them. They were pop around her legs and jump into her lap and squeak, and as soon as she moved, they'd follow her around. She was super friendly and definitely the most engaged/friendly employee we met that day. I wouldn't wear low-cut tops or anything that an otter can "flop" into and accidentally expose parts of you. The otters, again, treat you like playground furniture, and if they can burrow into it, they will. They were trying to get into the waistbands of jeans, and crawled onto the shoulders and down the backsides of shirts and dresses. They like playing with hair. The instructions state to tie up hair, but I don't think they would have gotten tangled in it. They just seem to like nibbling. They do have little claws, and they do bite. They don't seem like malicious or violent bites. I'd liken it to a cat love bite. I think they just like biting things. The bites are definitely a surprise ouch, but they don't break skin, and you don't really notice them after they happen. They will give little bites, though, even while seemingly happy. For example, one crawled into a pant leg, and I tried to raise the leg to see him, and he gave a little bite because he wanted to be left in the darkness. Another time, one just launched himself across the room into my lap, nipped a finger, then hopped out and kept running. Just something to note if you have little kids around. You sit on your cushions, and the otters run free around you. You can pet them as they run by, but you're not allowed to force them to stay or hold them. They will just plop into your laps, though, throughout the experience. If you've ever played with ferrets, they act like rambunctious water ferrets. They might be able to add a chair if sitting on the ground is difficult, but the otters may not interact with you as much. You stay seated on your cushions throughout the half-hour experience, and the employee gives you little otter toys and treats to attract them to you. I gotta be honest: our otters ignored all of the treats and toys and just wanted to climb around us instead. You really have to plan ahead for any of their close-up animal encounters. I'd probably guess this is their bread-and-butter for funding the place. Appointments book up like 4 months in advance, and there is no rescheduling. (There is a partial credit refund, but you'll need to stalk out another 4-month-out-date.) A lot of the animal enclosures are very cement-heavy. They aren't much to look at, and I do have some concerns there, even with no knowledge of keeping animals.
