Coconut-Lime Curry with Rice and Naan
Tim S.

Great tea during the previous visit. This time we ate a really early "dinner". We had 2 appetizers, that were $3 off during HH, plus a Coconut-Lime Curry dinner that we shared. All were excellent, as was the service. We used to come here many years ago when it was the Blethering Place but were happy to find that this incarnation is good as well.

High Tea

We came for high tea at what was once The Blethering Place, unfortunately it's under new ownership. As a result, I can't fault it for its quality of high tea based on the restaurant and grill, that it now is. Nothing tasted like homemade so it wasn't what we expected. So don't go solely for this high tea eat something else maybe they're better at it.

I should have listened to myself when I said I wouldn't go back there the last time I went. I find they have a good selection on the menu but I always end up somewhat disappointed with the food. I had a half a sandwich with fries. They put a big old pickle slice on it. Looked nice but it left the sandwich all wet. My husband enjoyed his mango salad. The China tea cups are a nice touch.

The food is normal. Service is good , nice ambiance. The scone is delicious. Others is just average. It's a good breakfast handout for family.

Cream tea

Good, reasonably priced Afternoon Tea. I had the light cream tea with a pot of Earl Grey and a huge berry scone. The dining room is traditional, with wood paneling and high back chairs. The area has nice shops and parks for burning off the teatime calories }}

YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM...to the point where we were both in a food coma. This place is absolutely beautiful...for something built in 1912, it seemed like a well worked on modern building. Just breath taking. We had breakfast here since we were both craving some delicious eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce. The orange juice was the best I've ever had as well. Our server was amazing and so sweet and helpful. The price was a bit more than what we'd normally pay for breakfast, but so well worth it. Oh...and no lines! Love it love it love it!

We noticed that a number of people eating the fish and chips left food uneaten on their plates. The waitress was nice. But we watched our food sit under the warming lights for 10 minutes before it was served. Not good. The view was beautiful. Wonder when the owners last ate the food. Better to drive down the road to Genoa Bay for a better restautant experience.

There's a parking lot on the lower part of hill, if you're not lucky to snag the few spots up front. I went here on a night that I just didn't feel like cooking supper & to enjoy the bay views before it got too dark. There was some larger groups eating/celebrating plus a smattering of smaller tables. I didn't notice more than one waitress & occasionally what I think was a manager on the floor serving. I wasn't in a huge rush to order but I do think the was some very long waiting periods to get a menu, get my a non-alcoholic drink and even much longer to be noticed I just wanted to get the bill to leave. I did appreciate that it was delivered warm. It wasn't a slammed place, but I do also understand when a waitress is running on fumes. So perhaps the bartender & manager could step in when when gaps need to be filled (as I noticed there was more tables awkwardly waiting to pay than me). Food was decent helping but nothing I would say was at a wow factor. I only had one meal here but my friends that have stopped here several times had good remarks about their meals. So maybe another stop by when I'm in the area is worth a second shot & enjoy a view to the water.

Nice little pub in Oak Bay - we had a filling lunch here on our recent holiday in BC…read more We were on the hop-on hop-off bus tour of Victoria and stopped by the quaint village of Oak Bay because it was lunch time and we needed a bite to eat. Wandering down Main Street, we spotted Penny Farthing and its sister restaurant Vis à Vis (they share a kitchen and have the same owner). Half of us wanted English pub food, the rest wanted sophisticated French cuisine, so we compromised; we sat outdoors on the common patio and ordered from both menus! Standout dishes: - Brie tart: warm and delicious, from the Vis à Vis menu. - Buffalo Chicken Wrap: flavorful and zingy, one of my favorite dishes on the trip. - The Farthing Burger: juicy and filling. Service was friendly and relaxed, and prices were reasonable. Happy to return.

The Sunday roast was just a thick piece of roast beef . It did not seem fresh like it was carved from a roast. It did not melt in my mouth. The potatoes were good-food was not hot - there was no au jus no gravy it was still expensive at $33. Also I asked for a gin and tonic with a craft gin and they added another $5 on the bill which at previous visits they didn't. This resteraunt gets away with a lot because they are a favourite of the people who live in Oak Bay. Like I said the staff for the most part are very friendly but the food could be improved especially since they supposedly share the kitchen with Vis à Vis next door which is a pricier place that does have great food. I think they just need to pay more attention to the food quality and temperature and either hire more serving staff for the busy nights or just make sure they are present to check on people. And I would not order the roast again unless I knew it was freshly carved.

The first night my wife and I had scallops for appetizers and herb crusted Wild pacific salmon for the entrees. Their fish were cooked to perfection and the accompaniments were an enhancement as opposed to a dominating force. The second night I had escargot and my wife had the beet and goat cheese salad. We both loved our appetizers. The shepherds pie was good although I found the cheese on top of the mashed potatoes was neither necessary nor authentic, but it was still quite good. My wife had the duck confit which she liked very much. The ambiance is one of a country English cottage which felt cozy and warm and the servers were personable and solicitous without hovering. I'm guessing as good as most of the restaurants in town (Hastings House lies just outside the main strip).

Started out with lobster bisque (with a good amount of lobster) and a dozen snails (chef slipped a couple extra!) in a marvelous garlic butter and Parmesan sprinkled over all. Then for entree we enjoyed a wonderfully prepared Herb Crusted Wild Pacific Red Snapper With Creamy Parmesan Polenta, Basil Pesto. I enjoyed the Pan-Seared Nova Scotia Deep Sea Scallops on a fresh bed of lettuce mix and greens. So definitely a restaurant to try but you'll want to plan staying a night or two given they are on an island off the Vancouver island! Rooms are great also with some placed in cabins with views making you feel like you're in a tree house amongst the pines.

The salmon main was absolutely delicious. The salmon roe added a texture were your mouthful just popped. The duck main was cooked perfectly. Did not taste gamey. The black rice or risotto in this dish was very tasty. The dessert of Panna cotta was delicious and had a citrus finish. The dessert feature of rhubarb cake was just meh. The white frosting had no taste and was thick on the cake. You finish out the meal with some jellies and some caramel Service was good but here is the reason for the low rating.... The main of the flat iron with arugala on the top with fries. They plated it and served it with a slug in it. The slug fell from inside the salad onto the plate . A baby slug. But it was living and moving. What followed was poor response and gaslighting of which this restaurant should be ashamed. In order not to disgust the others I stopped a woman that was working the floor to remove the plate. When I pointed to the slug why gave a small chuckle and half smile and stated, "well, it is farm to table." That is gaslighting. Right there that was a poor response. I see signs saying Michelin on this restaurant, but really...if you had served a slug to a someone rating you for a Michelin, you think you would get that rating? Highly doubtful. That should never have been served. Yes the restaurant cooked another meal which took longer. They cooked it just fine too....however their lackluster and empty words of well we do say it's farm to table doesn't replace an apology or an assurance of we will do better.
