Herron's Reach

Blackpool once was a golden town. As a kid I have fond memories of glittering promenade lights and…read morepleasure beach heaven. Those are distant memories and the city is no longer seen as golden. These days the reputation of this seaside town has taken a bit of a battering. Stag weekends, dirty beach, chav culture and lack of high-end consumer friendly conditions has led to it being pigeon holed as a hole of a different kind. I can't say it has turned a corner completely, not yet anyway but I am here to report a different side to Blackpool which begs for it to be removed from this pigeon hole immediately. A close family member is moving here for a job for the next couple for years and helping them find a decent property has led me to discover another side to the town. Did you know for example that a De Vere property is present here in Blackpool called Herron's Reach? You know what... it's only five minute drive from the beach and this area of Blackpool will blow you away. Nestled between Blackpool Zoo, Victoria Hospital and Stanley park lies this stunning 230 acre hotel resort. While only being a stone's throw away from the hustle and bustle of the beach, this is a completely secluded oasis which is one of the best hotel options in Blackpool. The spa and golf facilities are great albeit both not my cup of tea. The rooms are comfortable and homely with stunning views of the parkland and golf course. There are 172 of them so you shouldn't have too many problems booking a room. The premiership is being graced by Blackpool's presence this year so I expect business might be good this year. The dining options are great also, the brasserie serves up a treat or two with great British cuisine made with fresh locally sourced ingredients. There is also the option for foodies after modern classical cuisine with Nineteen bar and restaurant where I recommend you get a deck table overlooking the golf course. It really is an absolute delight this place. I realize it might take a while for the town to shed its bad image but pay this venue a visit and it will go along way towards bringing that gold back!!

But the quality of service I received at The Avon Hotel has been excellent. The owner gives you his personal phone number, if you need something. The location is perfect if you are going to The Winter Gardens, the tower or the beach. Near the plenty of restaurants and things to do. Very secure hotel. Only people staying there have a key to get into the hotel. And the hotel has a Ring camera doorbell. I'm from the states and I know hotels I have been to in Coventry, Glasgow are very different to what Americans expect from a hotel. London and Manchester have the same quality of hotels like the states. If you are going to Blackpool and want to be walking distance from everything. Stay at the Avon hotel.

It is across the road from the campus, and a five min walk from the high street restaurants and shopping. That was the main highlight of the place for me. The hotel smelt very strongly - of stale cigarettes, mould, everything. Throughout the stairs and corridors. Luckily my room didn't, but it was very drafty, with a room menu actually stuck in the wall trying to block a draft. Unfortunately there wasn't air con / thermastat in my room, so I had to experiment with the one small radiator for two nights. I specifically booked this hotel as they have baths in the bathrooms, but I was very sad when I realised that the taps on my bath didn't work and also that the plug was too small for the hole. So no bath for me. Next, breakfast. Mmm, instant coffee (well from a machine but tastes like instant), stale bread and pastries, uninspired selection of anything else. Thanks to this hotel, I rediscovered Weetabix. An expensive rediscovery. All in all, I wasn't impressed and I won't run to stay at another Legacy Hotel.

Just something to note if you are going, you do get it back after a few banking days. The room was clean and spacious with a tv and free wifi. There was also good quality shower gel and shampoo in the bathroom, not the normal acid that hotels supply. Our room overlooked the road but you would never know unless you opened the windows. Breakfast was buffet serve yourself for everything. The tea/coffee machine had espresso, latte, cappuccino etc on offer. There were cereals, yoghurts, fruit and cooked breakfast available. Bottom line I would return if I was in Preston again.
