Eight years after cycloptic sailor Horatio Nelson asked a man to kiss him before dying and being dunked in brandy, this magnificent statue was unveiled behind Liverpool Town Hall. That derogatory sentence is just my envy shining through, envy that I'll never be commemorated in such an epic way.
Rather than just being a stone likeness of a person stood unemotionally on a plinth, the Nelson Monument is adorned with noticeable details. As well as the famous signal 'England expects every man to do his duty' running around the cylindrical base, there's four shackled prisoners symbolising his greatest military victories. There's also angels, flags, a cannon, Nelson himself and a skeleton peeking out from cloth, almost certainly indicating death, the scamp.
