Generic Theater for Kids - The ending lineup of characters for Alice/Dorthy in Oz

Generic Theater for Kids

Our kids did the most recent children's theater class and had their performance tonight…read more But every week the kids got into the car upon class pick up (ages 7 and 9) and would talk about how the two teachers just yelled at the kids the whole time and said rude things to them. I would ask to tell me what was said and here's some examples "shut up and listen" "you didn't practice your lines!!" To children who clearly were trying their best and did practice. The kids would say that they just sat in class the whole time unable to talk while other people worked on their part and they just had to sit and listen so they found it to be not only boring, but very stressful. Day of performance: I heard them rehearsing beforehand and again the children were being yelled at. They put down the children by saying they haven't practiced and they aren't good. They are not building the kids up by encouraging them. They literally told the kids "this is the worst show we've seen" before the kids were expected to go on stage in front of parents and family to preform what they just worked months for. No smiles on any of the kids faces until it was finished. Also- there was not enough practice before hitting the stage. They hadn't even ran the play from start to finish until they did it in front of everybody live. All the kids seemed very unsure and they each forgot a large percentage of their lines and looked very confused about what to do on stage. This is because they never had a proper dress rehearsal. My kids were very uneasy and disturbed at seeing how the two women spoke to the other kids in their class. They even said they felt scared of them. There was 1 boy with a speak delay/learning disability of some sort and my son said that he got yelled at before the performance so bad that he cried. When we heard that we were mad for that poor child and his parents. These kids should feel proud of themselves, not shamed and disappointed in their performance. This is the beginning of these children's confidence in theater and they are being made to dislike it and feel dumb. Confidence is everything and it's not what they are gaining here. As my 7 year old says- "we are supposed to be built up, not torn down"

If I could rate these classes Terribly Traumatic, I would. All of my child's friends and classmates…read morefelt unsafe and unhappy after only two days. The third day -according to my child- ruined the whole program for them. My child took other classes and said that they no longer want to be in any classes with this so called "children's summer camp company" ever again. My child came home after having called me in the class (we will talk about the call later) saying that they had just experienced the worst panic attack in the entire life. Now, my child has anxiety and frequently gets these kinds of panic attacks; so for my baby to come home and tell me they just experienced the WORST ATTACK EVER, simply will not go unsaid. When they had called me that day two hours before pickup they had explained the situation with the help of a dear friend. It is oustanding to me that they could barely speak and needs their friend to talk to me. The situation at hand was told to be toxic, manipulative, and extremely traumatic. While on the call I was listening to the situation unfold. To say the least I was shocked, angry, and extremely disappointed. I heard an ADULT call the entire class sh*theads, gaslight them by saying the kids were ruining her happy place and dumping her past year's trauma on them. WHAT?! These are kids we're talking about. CHILDREN. Not therapists, not adults; kids as young as 9. My child also reported that a friend of theirs (who i was told wishes to be anonymous as possible) was told they were the favourite. Yeah. Not only that too, this child was asked to help an ADULT how to calm down the rest of the kids. THEY WERE TOLD THESE THINGS BY AN ADULT DURING A PANIC ATTACK. My child also claimed that another friend (this child was not in the class long enough-due to this situation-to tell my child their contact info so, they are staying anonymous) was told to be with the rest of the class after being vividly reminded of their traumatic upbringing. It is truly revolting, please never sign your child up for these camps unless your prepared for more therapy expenses. 1st Virginia Public Safety Training Academy - yay!!! couldn't be more excited about my aim :) Thank you for the encouraging words Lt. Tynan!

1st Virginia Public Safety Training Academy

I enrolled in the 02E Entry-Level Private Investigator course at 1st Virginia Public Safety…read moreTraining Academy in June 2025 to try and pave the way to a career after retiring from the military, and it was without a doubt the worst educational experience I have ever had. The instructor, Luis Cortes, demonstrated a complete lack of professionalism, instructional structure, and ethical conduct from the moment class began. Here is exactly what happened: No Real Instruction Given: The first half and only day of actual classroom time was spent listening to Luis Cortes ramble on about his past as a bodybuilder and brag about how agencies supposedly seek him out for training. Instead of teaching, he used up class time to gloat and print off a disorganized 100-page packet that we were then told to study outside of class, with no in-class teaching, review, or guidance on the material we would be tested on. Abandonment of Classroom Responsibility: After that first day, which was on a Monday, Luis Cortes informed us we were told not to return until that Friday, essentially dismissing us from the course while still expecting us to complete a series of self-directed assignments, robbing us of the required sixty hours of classroom instruction to legitimately fulfill DCJS standards and earn a license. We were given a vague scenario (e.g., car crash) and told to generate our own investigative case file from scratch, with zero instruction on how to properly conduct interviews, draft reports, or follow legal procedures. It was the equivalent of paying nearly $500 to be told, "Figure it out on your own." Hidden, Undisclosed Costs: On top of the $495 course fee, students were expected to pay additional, undisclosed expenses. These included using our own gas and transportation to attend civil/criminal court hearings and to go to city records offices to pay for and retrieve the original deed to our current residence. None of these required tasks were mentioned prior to enrollment, which is deceptive and unacceptable for any legitimate training program. Unethical and Possibly Improper Behavior: During class, Luis Cortes called someone he personally knows at DCJS on their cellphone to expedite student paperwork, then told us not to tell anyone about it, explicitly admitting it could get them both in trouble. This behavior directly contradicts the "moral, legal, and ethical" standards he preached during the course. It was both hypocritical and concerning. Unprofessional Environment: Luis Cortes made an inappropriate comment to a student that made some of us uncomfortable. The entire setting felt more like a personal vanity show than a professional learning environment. The lack of structure, lack of respect for students' time and money, and blatant disregard for proper protocol made it very clear this is not a place committed to actual education. Bottom line: This was not a class. It was a disorganized, overpriced, self-study assignment disguised as professional training. If you're considering this academy for any certification through a class instructed by Luis Cortes, don't. You will not receive what you're paying for, and you'll likely leave frustrated, misled, and still unprepared to pass your exam or perform in the field. I have formally withdrawn, filed a complaint with DCJS, and requested a refund and permanent removal of my personal information from their system. Save your time, your money, and your patience. This is not a legitimate learning environment. One star only because zero stars is not an option.

I am pleased to say that I ended up continuing on with my training from Unarmed to Armed officer. The instructors are amazing people. They inspire you to be the best you can, they teach you strength through knowledge and proper training. The instructors teach you in specifics taking you step by step using tricky tactics to keep you on your toes preparing you for the big step outside. The lead instructor was very helpful, an issued had happened and he was first to step up and say "You are my student so therefore I got your back". It was a very positive experience and I hope to come back and train more with 1st Virginia Training Academy. No one knows their stuff better than these men and women. Would definitely recommend!
