If you didn't bring enough to read on your journey overseas you can likely find something here that is acceptable. I'm giving this place a 4* review because the owner/proprietor recommended a restaurant 2 blocks away called the Schelling Salon that was truly great. I have debated getting a Kindle for a long while. So easy! So convenient! etc, etc, etc. However, it would preclude me from visiting fine little bookshops such as The Munich Readery, and this would be a shame. (Plus, I can barely care for my iphone, what on earth would become of a Kindle!?) SO for now, I stick with real books...charming, isn't it? And, I like the smell of books. The hunt of the bookstore chase. Finding something new I never thought I'd read. Watching people explore books. There is a whole culture of "real books" and typically it goes along with coffee as well, so I'm game. The Munich Readery is indeed charming. What it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in organization. The shelves are well-stocked, well-ordered...better than some "chain" bookstores I've been in. Just because it is secondhand, by no means should lead you to think that this is a mishmash/hodgepodge of book chaos. Quite the contrary, all the sections are easily found, sorted and all books are run alphabetically by author. There is also a half-price rack in the front and a "new arrival" section just to the left of the cash register. I picked up The Emperor's Children by Clair Messud to keep my jetlagged nights at bay, for just a quick 7.95 euro. New $14.95, and I'm sure at least that much via Kindle. True story. The Readery also has great events (readings, open mic, childrens story hour), and they do actually take books in exchange for store credit. Check their web site for info as the owner needs to be in if you are going to do this. Also, they have a really great policy if you bring back books to the Readery that you've purchased there, you get a nice credit on your next purchase as well (higher than another book bought elsewhere). It's like book recycling magic, and particularly great for travelers that burn through books, and locals that hate paying retail. They also have "Cafe Browse" which is a small coffee machine at the cash register where they'll whip you up a cappucino, espresso, etc while you look around. If there was ever a foreign city where you could find a wonderful English-language bookstore, it'd be Munich. Hence the Munich Readery, a seller of USED books whose supply of books rivals (in quantity, quality, and range) rivals that of stores in England and America. Even better: since the staff knows that many of their shoppers may just be passing through town, they offer trade-in and buy-back policies so you can save money (and not be stuck schlepping a lot of books home or to your next travel destination). Oh, and the bookstore happens to be located in a very neat part of town, Schwabing West, which is worth a stroll! read more

I think I had heard rumours of this bookshop, but had never seriously looked for it. I discovered it whilst experimenting with a new walk into the centre of Munich. Excellent shop, very well organised and a surprisingly wide selection of quality books. Amazingly I found precisely the book I had been looking for: The Penguin unabridged version of 'The Count of Monte Cristo', probably the best version available in English. I would tend to say that some of the books are pricey, but the offer of 40% off your next book, if you return the book in the same good condition, means that the prices are about average. I'm so pleased to have discovered this shop. I'll be visiting it regularly in future. read more

Amazing English second hand book shop in Munich. We're not here for very long, so I'll buy and read a few books, then take them back to get some money back, and buy a new one. And so the cycle keeps going. I think you get 40% back on each book that you bought there. Love it. read more

The best second hand English bookshop I think I've ever been too. It seems the owner takes lots of care in keeping the shelves stocked with good books. I spotted a bunch of titles I recently read or have been wanting to read: Knut Hamsuns Hunger, Cortázars Blowup and Hopscotch, Rilkes The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, Charles Stross's Accelerando, Chauteubriand, Thomas Merton, etc. If you want to sell to them you have to make an appointment, which he said they don't take much and pay very little! Books you buy there can be sold back for 40%. Lots of titles seem to run at 7.95 Euro. Its his magic number. read more

Lovely english second hand book shop! My favourite place in all of Munich ! Spend so many hours in here browsing through the books, and never leave empty handed! Wonderful bookshop, introduced to me by my son when we were visiting him from New Zealand. Was able to purchase books of plays by Harold Pinter, John Mortimer and Peter Shaffer, so hard to come by in NZ. Lovely atmosphere and comfortable seats. read more
