I'm only as perturbed as I am under the illusion that finding a place that was once owned by Johnny Depp means I'm now married to him. Okay, so this particular Viper Rooms wasn't owned by Johnny Depp but it shares the same name. That is close enough for me. Now will it live up to expectations? Well actually yes it does. It's housed in a Grade II listed building and inside they've spared little expense. We're talking four bars surrounded by multiple rooms and a mad mix up of music as well. You'll get anything from disco to Hip Hop. It is beautiful, it really is. A special mention goes out the centre piece chandelier and quite awesome (not to mention comfortable) leather sofas throughout. To get you in the mood and your disco shoes raring the drinks menu will blow you away. It beats some clubs I've been to with a huge selection of cocktails, wines, fizz and beer. This is grade A stuff. It may be a little mainstream for some people's tastes but just go with the flow and enjoy the venue if nothing else.

Yes, HiFi -it's one of my favourite places to bust out my best grooves. (I'm not suggesting they're good, but I'm sure they're a spectacle.) I'd not been back for some time, so when the opportunity arose this weekend, I couldn't turn it down. As I was arriving, some of my friends had left, and in some respects I can see why. It was absolutely heaving, and of course the music was incredibly loud, as standard. It's difficult, as I was certainly getting the rage whilst trying to make my way to the toilets, or the bar -it's one thing for a venue to be heaving (this is fine, and can elevate the fun), but it's entirely another when you're battered and shoved beyond belief. Perhaps it was because it was so late, and so folk were drunk, but there were rather a lot of pushy people and manners had almost entirely left the building. It costs nothing to say 'excuse me'! Anyway, rant over. That being said, once I managed to wade to the bar, things got a lot better. The chap who served me was lovely and friendly, and beer in hand, I managed to find a spot with my comrades where we could dance with abandon. Top tip - the steps by the stage seemed to be the most spacious throughout the evening! And that brings me to the music. It's always utterly fantastic - for all the funk, soul and reggae that you could want, this is the place to come. I've not danced for a solid few hours in quite a while, and can absolutely say that it was fantastic, and in spite of the crowds I'm hoping to come back again soon. Drinks wise, I didn't really check out all the options, but there's a fairly decent range to suit most tastes. Price wise it was £4 in at about 1am, perhaps more earlier on, and the drinks are standard -expect to pay about £3+ per drink. I agree with Ben, the door staff are quite the jobsworths, though this keeps out the riff raff, for which I'm grateful! (And, they are friendly, don't get me wrong.) The toilets were in a bit of a poor state, but having been in much worse, it's not all that bad. Essentially, the biggest draw is of course the fantastic DJs, live music and comedy at their other regular events, friendly staff and having a right old dance. Highly recommended for a proper night of fun. Just be patient with the crowds!

Having said that, some of the best nights of my life have been at Corp. I've been going to Resistanz festival every year for the last four, and if I'm in Sheffield for any other reason I inevitably wind up there. Every time, and I do mean every time, I see my friends get obliterated, hook up, and dance like maniacs. There is some strange bayou magic to its foetid bathrooms. Yes, you may lose your kicks, but beyond a shadow of a doubt, the price is worth paying. Incredible bands, fantastic DJs, a friendly clientele, and my favourite accent in all of Yorkshire combined with some of the best alternative music going and cheap drinks. If you're in your stompiest boots (and you should be), what's not to like?

I kinda have to be honest and review it as a facility rather than the quality of the individual nights I've had here.... I will explain.. Firstly I should mention I don't live in Sheffield and have probably been to Corp in the region of 8 to 10 times. Some of those were for gigs, some for club nights and three times for Resistanz festival. It's relatively easy to find in the depths of Sheffield (situated about 5 minutes from The Moor) and puts on a plethora of gigs and events throughout the year. I actually really like the exterior. It gives the feeling of a dirty warehouse club and is spot on for what you'll find inside. There are tables outside which come in very useful if you're at a gig (and the courtyard isn't open). You can't take your drinks outside the venue, but this is perfectly fair (as there are plenty of places to stash on the inside of the door). This particular time around, the smell of vomit really hit me as I went in through the dingy corridor. In fact, I had to go straight outside again so as not to be sick myself. I understand that with the cheap drinks prices and the clientele it tends to attract on certain nights that people probably do drink to excess, it's just never been as bad as any other venue I've ever been to (and that includes Snobs in Birmingham!). Once you get used to the smell, you can hit the bar. On a club night the drinks are ludicrously cheap (70p a single vodka and coke)... That is, if you can call it Vodka. I steered clear on my last visit and stuck to the £1.50 cans of Cider (which my body seemed to thank me for). There are 3 rooms inside (side room, main room and upstairs) and each comes with it's own bar. There is also a separate club area (called Local Authority) attached to the venue and a very large courtyard. Now... If you're a visitor to this venue, you know I HAVE to mention the state of the toilets. They should come with a health warning, seriously. If you have a toilet seat, a lockable door, toilet roll AND handwash; you are in the minority. Normally you might get a max of two of these essential elements. On a side note, Local Authority seems to actually have half decent toilet areas so the venue really needs to pull it's socks up on this. The sound can be quite hit and miss for live acts. It's been excellent for some gigs and terribly poor for others. It can really depend on the sound tech's whether you get an enjoyable aural experience. However... I guess sometimes it just doesn't matter. When you've had enough 70p vodkas on a club night, you probably wouldn't notice. Another quick warning; watch your drink! Everyone should always be wary in clubs, but I've seen spiking quite prominent on some nights at this venue. The security are actually pretty good and seem to keep an eye on everything, but I guess that says more about the clientele that use this venue on selected nights. Oh! And make sure you take enough cash out with you! There is a cash machine in the venue, but it was charging £2 for withdrawals last weekend (which could really hit you if you're on a budget). Finally, no goffick's life would be complete without at least one trip to Corp. I have always had a great time here (despite the toilets and the smell), but that's largely down to the nights I frequent. Don't let this review put you off visiting as the atmosphere can be electric (and worth suffering all the other stuff). Go, visit, enjoy and write your own review.

My suggestion was actually a hit. I did my indecisive alterego very proud. There are many quality club nights organised by the Lost and Found name and this was no exception. Dance off, being £1 entry, sold it for me. Doubles for £3, a range of sambucas £1.50? Messy. Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. Another great Northern Quarter location that needs to become a regular thing for me.

The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

Mostly DJ's but occasionally live music and Rock Nights with bands. The dance floor is not huge and usually packed. It bounces too especially when groups of Goths in New Rocks are jumping around. This is the third floor too. Not designed for the disabled as lots of steep stairs to the free cloakroom and ticket office. Loud, friendly and jumping this is an established place having been there around 25 years or more and just as popular now as it always was. Drinks and cocktails are reasonably priced. Plenty of room to circulate if you are good at pushing. The long bar can involve a wait or misheard orders but not much of a problem. One corner used to be called Goth Corner as it was where they all congregated but now the students seem to have discovered it too. You can often find a seat there or else you will stand. Once upon a time you always stuck to the bar floor but they seem to have solved that problem. A shame as it was famous for it. A good night out but your ears will ring for hours.

There are much better clubs than Oceana in Leeds, but, unfortunately, there are few that are…read morebigger, or busier, than this sprawling establishment on the corner of the Merrion Centre. Sprawling was the only word I could think of to describe Oceana Leeds; there must be dozens of rooms in this place, all decorated differently - dancefloors, boudoirs, ski lodges - but rather than endearing you to the club, this just annoys you as you spend half your night on the move, or trying to find friends you've lost in the labyrinth. They do have a student night where some drinks are ridiculously priced (80p), but this gets overcrowded, meaning that the mazy interior becomes even more hazardous. The real gripe most people have with this place, however, is the way it can up its prices with no notice for one random evening. For example, on Easter bank holiday Monday, the entry fee went up to £9, and you struggled to find drinks cheaper than £3.50, which, for Leeds, is a bit shocking.

Granted, it's definitely got size on it's side, it's easy to get to, there's plenty of dance space, and once inside and all gathered together in collective buddy solidarity, there's an actual properly DJ for you to get your groove thing on. Or down. Or jiggy with. That sounds wrong. I got change from a tenner for paying to get in, and compared to some of the places I've been to in Manchester, for a large city centre club, I didn't find that too unreasonable. Some of my Yorkshire counterparts tended to disagree, but c'est la vie right? Also, if you can grab a flyer off one of the promotions people, and you get there before 10pm, entry's fiver. So I didn't think it was too bad at all. Inside it's absolutely massive, and depending on what night you go in, you can have access to up to seven different spaces. Oceana seems to have taken some influence from the bigger clubs in Ibiza like Pacha, that have separate themed spaces for patrons to dive into and enjoy, rooms I remember were the Ski Lodge, the New York Disco, the Venetian Ballroom, and Secret Garden. Drinks weren't too hard on the wallet either, a nice bogof incentive before the night hit the midnight hour. Once you do hit the midnight hour you've got three hours of partying left, as kickout time is decent 3am. Good times were had by all, not marvellous, but not hideous either.

Unfortunately for me, my friends are all big drum 'n' bass/dubstep heads and we ended up going more often than not, to see the latest underground names - generally pitching themselves up at Mint Club, who charged an extortionate entry fee as there'd only be us and a handful of others who knew what we were getting ourselves in for. Thankfully, the heavy bass remains. But everything else has been done up; from the DJ to the bar to the toilets to the dancefloor. It's still not the best nightclub in Leeds but it never was, it had it's niche market and it still does. There's novelty value for the non-dance heads too. The seats are enlarged polos.

Well head down to the Mint Club and reassess. This really is a true clubbers dream. I always loved it as a venue but since it's The Mint Club has undergone a £500, 000 refurbishment, I'm becoming quite obsessed with the place. The sound system is immense and a cutting edge lighting system called a 'DISCO PANEL' which features in the 'Watergate' club, Berlin has been installed. This claims to be the first of its kind in this country. Whatever, it works the club like a dream. The sounds served up tend to stay away from mass market convention, offering Tribe House and minimal Techno. Indeed, it regularly boasts the DJ set of Techno uber God Sven Vath. Try not to bounce off the walls when he's in town. The Mint Club also welcomes back Asylum and Filth to its roster of Saturday club nights along with a whole host of quality mid-week and Friday club nights. It's full-on action and no room for ear plugs or dance fatigue. On top of this the bars, DJ booth, seating areas, dance floor, toilets, and outside area have all been up graded to a very high specification. Swanky, underground and a priority of quality over quantity, win win all the way.
