To say that the Mexican is mediocre is a grave overstatement of its horrors contained. While the decor is nice and the atmosphere is quite pleasant, faintly reminiscent of a true Mexican eatery, that, unfortunately, is where the positive qualities stop.
If you're aiming to get a lot of food for your money, I'm not sure that the Mexican is your place to go. I wouldn't go so far as to call it expensive, but there are many other places that offer more for less. That being said, its prices are competitive for what you can get in the Old Square.
The drinks there (alcoholic, of course) are rather poor. Their margaritas are a little weak and fake-tasting, similar to what you'd get from using a pre-made mix from a plastic bottle. For the money that they charge for these drinks, I would have expected at least some real limes being used in their cocktails. Their flavored margaritas aren't any better, tasting of flavor syrup mixed with the pre-mixed cocktail that's been sitting too long on the bartender's counter. I can't say that this is a distinctly authentic experience.
With regards to the food, I've vowed never to go there again. The food tastes as though reheated in a microwave several times over the course of the day before being shipped off to the customer. I strongly advise to avoid the refried beans, as those have resulting in several of my friends (myself included) having food poisoning for the next day (in the interest of science, I have verified that this is not a one-time occurrence). The "build your own fajitas" are rather hit-and-miss, as they tend to be a little erratic with their seasoning. However, the burrito was absolutely inedible. Topped with underseasoned guacamole, sour cream, and those lethal refried beans, it was nothing more than a soggy mess that was warm to the touch on the outside, but cold on the inside, which is a dead giveaway of microwaving food. There was absolutely no taste in the filling, and despite this, the staff were unwilling to rectify this in any way.
If you want to feel like you're in Mexico on a nice sunny Summer's day, then the Mexican's courtyard is the perfect place to take a few photos and move on. If you're on the prowl for good food, the Mexican is the place to avoid. read more
