(ironic, it since it started over him lying about his continuing education credits allowing him to practice in KS). He is either incapable of learning (not a good trait, especially for your attorney) or simply out for your check (Personal opinion is it's a 50/50 split) Either way, the guy is a rolling train wreck, and Devon does not seem to have much more going for him than Joshy. The problem with the Mathews Group is they use the flat rate system, so once you sign the contract, they have no incentive to help. When I first called about their services, I walked to Mr. Mathews within 5 min and met with him that same day for about an hour. After the meeting, which went well and he told me everything I wanted to hear, I signed the contract. That's when things changed. I was not able to get a hold of him after that. He couldn't find time to meet with me before court, he was supposed to meet me early beforehand, but he showed up late to court and did not even bring the documents I provided hm. I was essentially representing myself during the divorce hearing, which likely cost me. Thankfully the judge did make a fair decision regardless. My ex told me her lawyer had even commented afterwards how unprepared Mr. Mathews was. After court, he did not communicate the next steps. I found out later it took him over 2 months to get the paperwork in to the court. When I started received bills from the court, I called them and they said my attorney was supposed to go over it with me. When I told them my troubles, they encouraged me to write my complaint to the board since he had failed at his obligation. The few times I did talk with him, he was very rude and told me he didn't have time. In summary, the Mathews group is really good at getting you to sign their contract for their flat-rate services, but after that, they have no incentive to do the very bare minimum. I really felt scammed that after I paid him thousands of dollars, and he did barely anything. read more

Amazing! My feelings were all over the place. I relocated from California to Missouri to get married. After a month into the marriage, it was over. The situation was so horrific, I had no choice but to divorce my husband and yet I still loved him. I didn't know the first thing about Missouri divorce law and I was still living in California. I prayed that the Lord would send me a law firm with people that I could trust and could handle everything without me having to go to Missouri. I found the Matthews Group on line and I made a call and low and behold the Lord sent me an Angel. I was so blessed by Michelle Wiles. I explained my situation and she listened tentatively with patience and grace. She informed me of the process and then she went to work. I felt extremely comfortable. Her professional demeanor exuded integrity and transparency. She got back to me immediately, I didn't have to look for her in the process, she was on top of everything! Paid $2k. Horrible...horrible communication. Attorney blames office staff that quit for her non communication. Then the attorney quits too. I show up to court and my atty isnt there mr. Mathews was. He didn't even know who i was till they called my case and then proceeds to tell afterwards thst they need 2k more. Simple divorce..no kids just property dispute. They let ex drag case out...now almost year later. Now they just keep telling me they will draw up papers and no one gets anything. ..just sign and be done. I would like for all the prospective customers of this group to know the problems we had with them. First of all we hired them in a paternity case. the main lawyer, Joshua Mathews gave us an interview that was very impressive and we hired him for $3500. Immediately following the interview we found out what we got for our money. He failed to return phone calls and when he did, he was so rude and offensive that it put us in a totally defunked mood and we were scared to call him. Next the court dates, he never once showed up for court. He would send someone we didn't know and when we asked if he was going to show for court, we were told he would show for the trial phase. Well, that didn't happen either. When we asked if he was going to go over the final results he went off and yelled before he hung up. That's only a brief overview of our experience. The end result was tragic and I filed complaints with the Mo. bar and the Ks bar and he was found to be in violation of ethics with both. I found this attorney for my daughter for Child Support and Custody. She is a single mother and gave them all the money she had saved $3000.00. they said all the right things, sounded great so she signed the agreement. Now 4 months later we barely got anywhere!!!!. No since the opposing party is Pro Se they cannot talk to him, she must megotiate on her own. They failed to tell her that. Now 4 months in the date for hearing is January 2019. She had to pay another $750 just to get them to go to court with her for the very first hearing. Even though she was told it would be included in the original amount. She has no more money and will have to change to Pro Se at this point. Once they get your money you cannot get ahold of anyone, you do not know who you may talk to. She has yet to meet with an attorney. She is more stressed out now then before this started. In my opinion this firm needs to be investigated!! If you meet with them take a recorder with you they will lie and tell you what you need and want to hear then that's it. He could care less about you or your children. If you like wasting money choose them. Otherwise your better off representing yourself. I do plan on filing a complaint with the bar association. Which will go no where. But I want others to be aware to stay away from this company. I will tell anyone and everyone who asks to stay away from them. $3750 may not sound like a lot of money to some people but to a single Mom its a lot! The type of service given from this company was the worst I have ever experienced. Although they are a law firm and I feel they lost my case, that is not my complaint. I hired Joshua Mathews to handle my child custody case. Joshua Mathews has THE WORST work ethic I've ever seen in my life. He is argumentative and has a VERY bad temper. I am from California and had no idea what is going on in my court case the entire time. Joshua had such a bad temper, he pushed me off to one of his lower attorneys that had less than 6 months experience as an attorney. Once we went to court, the "lower" attorney didn't know my case even after I had told him the story 3 previous times. When I made my visit to Kansas to meet the attorney for the first time, Joshua NEVER came out of his office to introduce himself. I saw him in his office with his door open and as soon as I walked in, he closed his office door. He wasn't with a client either. He is pathetic! I called Joshua a few months later (today) and he basically told me (in a HORRIBLY rude and sarcastic tone) that since I only flew from California to Kansas 3 times in 6 months, that my son doesn't know me and I am not a good father. The truth is, every time I fly to see my 3 yr old son, he runs up to me and says "daddy". I have followed the court paperwork to a "T" and my sons mother did not. He basically told me "oh well" This law firm is TERRIBLE!!! They have HORRIBLE business practices and have no idea what they are doing. WARNING- Worst lawyer ever! If you value your sanity...you will *not* use Joshua Matthews, or anyone in the Mathews Group! For starters, the "flat rate fees" are just to lure you in. Once you pay...you will mean nothing to them...and they will have absolutely NO incentive to work for you. You will be lost in a sea of others just like yourself...and you will quickly start wondering if you're in an episode of the Twilight Zone...really...it's that bad. Our nightmare began in February 2012, when my husband and I had a "phone consultation" with Joshua Matthews. (we live out of state). My husband needed a fairly simple 'modification' done on his existing divorce decree in regards to his daughter's child support/college arrangements. We were initially attracted to the "flat rate", and Joshua Matthews told us "everything we wanted to hear". He pin-pointed how we should approach his very difficult ex-wife, and he "sounded" like an experienced attorney. (wrong!) We paid our money....and that was the last we heard from him for 6 months. His staff gathered our information for the case, but NOTHING went according to the plan in the consultation. He never so much as "informed" his staff about the direction of our case, so they did not approach his ex-wife in the manner we discussed and agreed upon...and THAT set the stage for a very long, and miserable experience. The office staff are absolutely terrible too. (Tricia, Julie, Katelyn) did *not* keep us updated on anything...EVER. (they say they will, but they don't). They ignore most emails. We asked multiple times to please "copy us" on letters and correspondence (like other attorney's do)...but they never once did. We always felt like our case was 'none of our business'. You literally have to BEG for information about everything. You will never know what's going on, and months will go by with no progress whatsoever. They never even got the "required" financial information from his ex-wife, even though we provided ALL of ours to her attorney! Unbelievable...an unexcusable. Somewhere along the way, Josh brushed our case off to another attorney there (Jadh) without even notifying us. She pretty much blew it by sending an "unapproved" settlement offer to the opposing counsel...then didn't telling us for 4 weeks that the ex-wife attorney had replied immediately. (found that out from the ex-wife a month later!) Which by the way...the ex wife was the only way we EVER found out anything on our case! All they did was tick her off...making her even more difficult to negotiate with. We emailed invisible Josh and INSISTED that he take the case back. (He didn't even remember us) We wanted to fire him..but we simply could not afford to hire someone new after paying him upfront. Ultimately, after NINE MONTHS of hell, we ended up having to "negotiate a deal" with his ex-wife directly..ourselves! After doing the hard part for him, literally all that was left was just acquiring the signatures for the modification to send in to the court. However, Josh LIED to us for weeks about emailing her attorney for signatures...he told us he was still "waiting to hear back from them". (NOT TRUE). The opposing attorney confirmed that! No idea "why" he lied about requesting their signatures. We would have been done!! So "WE" had to send the "revised modification " to his ex-wife for her signature AND for her attorney's signature ourselves..THAT"S how we finally got it. Very embarrassing. Strange place. Unprofessional. Incompetent. Dishonest. No integrity whatsoever. (He has no business being IN business, and I doubt he will last). A complete waste of money...as well as 9 months of our lives that we'll never get back!! Worst experience ever!!! read more

I hired J. Mathews for an adoption case where the birth father was out of state and contesting the adoption. I read the 3 recommended reviews by yelp & was apprehensive. Then I read the 9 "not recommended" reviews by yelp. I'm curious why the positive reviews are not recommended and you can't comment on them as you can the negative reviews. This law firm & staff have been very open, upfront, and honest with my family. All the dealings I have had to date have been very professional and completed in a timely manner. My phone calls, emails, and drop in visits have been met with the utmost professionalism and respect. On occasion I have brought in the little girl we are adopting. All staff we have dealt with greet her, ask her questions and make her feel she is part of the process and her opinions matter. This is very important to me as a parent; that my child feel comfortable. After my initial consultation I actually sat in the car with the rest of the family and wept. The instant relief I felt upon leaving the office was great. To know my case has been handled in the manner it has took a great deal of stress off of me. For once I didn't have to deal with this adoption on my own. I have a team of professional lawyers & staff behind me. I find myself relieved that I didn't take for granite the 3 recommended reviews but instead listen to the "not recommended" reviews that were more positive. I hired the Mathews group to represent my son in a custody case. Without getting into the particulars of the case, Mathews seamed very positive and I felt good about hiring him. Well, after he got the money we had no contact form him and when we called him he failed to return our calls. Time went on, and the court dates came up but he failed to show in court. Instead he sent another lawyer who was fresh out of law school the first 2tiems were no big deal but when it came to the trial, it was a big deal. We lost and then we were told by his paralegal that if we paid another $2500 they would go back to court. What a joke, I hope people look at our experience and go farther with their search for a lawyer. I'm so upset about the treatment I got from him. He isn't even appoligetic he tries to blame my son for all of it. In my opinion, a lawyer is supposed to work with the client and keep them informed of what's going on. The service was terrible and they made it very stressful. When I initially went to the Matthews group, I was able to speak to a lawyer immediately. I paid a flat rate and was assured that I could call with questions and concerns. My case went on for about 2 years. The courts would cancel dates and I would not be informed until the day of, or if I called to verify. Went to court in November, I had never met Mr. Mathews and he showed up to court late, not well dressed, did not know anything about my case. After being in trial for about 4 hours, he assured me that everything was good. However, because of his lack of knowledge of the case I did not feel that way. I received the judgement in January and it was not pleasing at all and was hard to understand. I called Mr. Mathews without receiving any return calls. Stopped by the office and was told that you received your judgement and Mr. Mathews has no further ties with you. As I'm standing there in tears trying to get and understanding of the order. Now in March I receive a letter saying that we have tried to reach out to you and Mr. Mathews say he is no longer representing you, we need to communicate on the order. Please, if you want better for what you are going through choose someone else. I read the reviews before choosing him and thought theirs always one person who is angry. Really wish I didn't have to give even the 1 star!!! Just read what everyone is saying, they are absolutely correct. My divorce took nearly 2 years, and now, 3.5 years later, we are still in court over custody. We had an agreement nearly a year and a half ago, but Josh decided he didn't need to respond to my countless emails. Our engagement was over after all, at the most critical time of my divorce, he chose to be absent because our contact was up. He never responded saying he needed more money, just ignored me, opposing counsel, and the GAL. My ex went through 4 different attorneys, of course Josh only thought there were 3, and every single one of them asked her if he was still my attorney due to his lack of responsiveness. I believe wholeheartedly that my life with my kids would be much different now, if we had just wrapped things up efficiently, instead of doing nothing for nearly 6 months... Which effectively pissed my ex off to the point that there is no reasoning with her any more. If you love you're family, stay far away from this firm. read more

This was the worst experience I have ever had. When an individual is in a situation in their life where they have to hire a lawyer, they are usually in a bad place to begin with. Hiring a lawyer should provide a sense of security and reassurance. Josh Mathews and his "team" did no such thing. After the initial consultation and the decision to hire, I made my one time payment and was in a positive state of mind. Two years later, zero case resolution, zero communication, and out $3500. We hired Mathews in December of 2010, after our daughter committed suicide. We were trying to get grandparent's visitation rights. We paid him a flat fee for that. Then, we learned our daughter left life insurance money and a savings account to her mother (me). He represented us in that case which was treated as a separate case and fee. Mathews and his office staff were a complete joke. He has no empathy or ethics. He bungled both cases but kept taking money. In July, 2012 we changed attorneys and paid them over $50K and they weren't any better than the Mathews Group. I cannot say enough IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY, don't be taken in by these people. We were in a state of shock and denial when we hired Mathews. Take your time and investigate thoroughly the attorney and firm you hire to represent you. They couldn't have cared less about our case. Make sure you document each meeting and phone conversation and you should be able to approve of any action performed by an attorney. In a separate review (the second set of attorneys we hired-Hubbard, Ruzicka, Kreamer & Kincaid and opposing counsel Sanford Krigel, Karen Rosenberg of Krigel & Krigel Law). Stay away from all of them. If you have a Will, Trust, Estate Planning, Adoption, Bankruptcy, etc. with any of them have it transferred to another ethical law firm. After over 3 years after our daughter's death, we were given no visitation rights with our grandson. We have filed for bankruptcy. We have a judgment of $20,000.00 to pay to our daughter's former girlfriend who is no relation to our grandson. read more

I went to The Mathews Group 6 1/2 months ago for help in the divorce that my wife filed against me. My wife has all the money in the family so The Mathews Group $2500 flat fee if what attracted me from the start. I had no friends or family to recommend a lawyer so I thought this would work. It has turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life, besides asking my soon to be ex-wife to marry me. At the start I thought the ladies in the office were professional and helpful. I paid them $2500 cash and spoke to them for about 1 hour and thought Josh Mathews would be my lawyer. One week later I found out that Josh wasn't my lawyer and I would have to work with Angela that was assigned to my case. Angela seemed nice at first(I never did meet her in person) but rarely would communicate with me. After 3 months in limbo I received a call from someone named Tyler. He informed me that Angela went away and he will be my new lawyer. When he asked me what seems to be going on in my divorce case I should have known I wasn't with the right law firm. Tyler did communicate with me when I had questions but he still didn't quite understand what my position was in the divorce. On my first court date almost 6 months after hiring The Mathews Group my lawyer was late to court. I sent him a text to see where he was, described what I was wearing so he would recognize me in the court room. When the Judge called my name I saw two lawyers stand up and approach the bench. As I walked up to the bench behind both lawyers(one for my wife and one for me) I felt so embarrassed not to know which lawyer was mine. The Judge finished quickly and I walked out of the court room in disbelief of what just happened. My lawyer approached me to introduce himself, we walked out of the court house quickly to his car talking the whole way. As we approached his car he stated he had to go so sadly I walked away. Over one week later when Tyler sent me a proposal letter that he wanted to send to my wife's lawyer, I was shocked in what he wanted to offer her. He wanted to settle for something that I never had mentioned. I thought for several days and made a great decision. On New Years Eve I decided I really needed a fresh start for 2014 and sent a letter to The Mathews Group, it was an end of our relationship letter to The Mathews Group. I have since hired a very good lawyer and spent thousands of dollars more but now I feel GREAT about my representation. WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! Please take your hard earned money and hire any other Lawyer in the Kansas City area other than The Mathews Group. Do your homework, research Lawyers, get a referral if you can, Don't do what I did and hire the cheapest drive thru, fast to take your cash lawyer. Notes: 1) I 6 1/2 months I never met Josh Mathews. 2) In 6 1/2 months I only spoke to him twice over the phone 3) I never met my 2nd lawyer. 4) I only met my 3rd lawyer once. read more

I paid the flat rate, provided all the details that were necessary to the petition and the case, and signed the documents under the good faith that they would actually file it with the court in a timely fashion. I have asked on multiple occasions to have paperwork filed on my behalf the last 2 months and so far nothing. These people will not return your emails, they will gladly charge your bank account,financial device the day you sign their paperwork and then not deliver. Divorce is hard enough but having to deal with jerks like this during a very emotional time is ridiculous. I wish I would have read these reviews before I hired them, I would have gone elsewhere. If I could score zero stars, I would. Every warning here is correct. They lure you in with a flat rate and a promise to work hard for you. Then you have to do all the work - contacting their offices, following-up, begging for help and understanding. They are lazy, in-ept, and unresponsive. I had three paralegal changes during my seven months with this firm. I can't stress enough that this is a lawfirm to avoid. This place is an absolute shit show. I hope others will learn from my very large mistake and not choose these morons to handle anything with the slightest importance. Filed in March, and got nothing (not a call back, responding email, or any simple paperwork) until September. I told them I was not at all happy because they drug the process out, ended up having to file a dismissal for the case, and was told I could pick the case back up from where we left off when ever we were ready and the way the specific dismissal worked was that we wouldn't have to refile, we would literally pick up where we stopped. I JUST got the dismissal forms today (that I should sign and have notarized) and when I emailed her back telling her I got them, I'm told my case no longer exists because it went threw the court February 5. It is now the 16th. And again, I JUST got the dismissal papers. So. After they put these papers threw the court without my signature and without notability, my case is no longer even on record because they filed the wrong dismissal in the first place. Complete ignorance. First conversation I had with these people was "super easy case, no disagreement with the plan on either side, should take 4months MAX" filed in March, received nothing until September, and in February they wrote my case off threw the court without my consent. If I could walk in and throat punch everyone of the idiots in that office, I would. Do not trust these people with your legal outcome... Because you will end up, with less money, a horrible outlook on any legal situation, frustration, and not even half of what you wanted in the first place. Sure they say its a 1 time fee. No matter what! really? A simple parenting plan hearing took over a year to resolve. I had been passed around to, I think, every paralegal on his team. I never knew who was going to meet me at the courthouse. Typically I would receive notice I had a court date the day before and made this very difficult with my job. By the end, they were so done with my case they essentially gave up and didn't even get 50% of what I wanted. I am a reasonable man who wanted 50% time with my child and for him to stay in the schools in ks instead of mo. that's really it. I'm not a ex con on drugs or abusive in anyway but I was ignored and marginalized and ultimately screwed out of a fair shake. Until I can afford to go back to court, I get to miss out on time with my boy. they might have done a better job if they didn't lose money on the amount of time it took. not my fault but now I'm paying for it. they didn't even come close to feeling like they had mine or my son's best interest at heart. Avoid them. not worth the time or trouble. there are better lawyers out there in my opinion. read more

If you have but one choice for a divorce lawyer, it should be Josh Mathews and his team! I got slapped with divorce papers before I could turn around and catch my breath. I was hurt, anger, devastated but at 61, I wasn't going to let this event define me. I search the internet, read the reviews, and looked at the results versus the hype. I picked Josh because the lion's share of the reviews said he went the extra mile. I needed an advocate for my side. It wasn't always easy Josh gives tough love. His frankness can seem harsh, but he explains why and goes into detail about the range of outcomes. His staff is exceptional. Particularly outstanding was Amber's genuine concern, caring and commitment. She let me vent in daily emails, she called me on weekends if need be. Amber showed she cared. It was not some hyperbole of a slick ad like you see in another firm. It was honest, decent and although I didn't always hear what I wanted, I heard what I needed. Josh has the money side of this mess, down to a science. I knew exactly what worse case, best case was and where I most likely would end up. In the end as one reads this, it is about results. Josh pulverized opposing counsel. He was prepared, organized and stayed on point. He clearly won the day. While the emotional toll isn't something lawyers can help with, knowing I won't continue to pay for something I didn't really want (a divorce), I can go into another relationship with peace of mind. They are horrible, I hired another attorney and within three days he was able to solve my issues with my divorce and get me far more than these so called attorneys were willing to even try and do. The Mathews group had my case for ten months and did nothing. They don't inform you about what is going on, they don't ever call you back!!! You better be willing to call them constantly to find out anything. The attorney that was doing my case, Tyler, went to work for the law firm that my ex had and they filed a no conflict of interest form without my signature!!!! HE LEFT IN JULY, AND I NEVER FOUND OUT UNTIL SEPTEMBER 29 THAT HE LEFT!!!!!! The Mathews group is shady, their practices are shady, and I wouldn't trust this law firm to handle anything. Go give your money to charities rather than pay them to represent you. This firm acts like they are doing you a favor because you hired them. So if you like being treated unprofessionally and not getting anything that you want in a divorce, then I guess this is the firm for you. DO NOT HIRE THIS HORRIBLE FIRM!!!!! Josh met with us nearly 2 years ago and has helped my husband battle not 1, but 5 cases, of which none of them are easy. He has met with us outside of normal work hours when we could not make the normal lawyers 9-5. He started it all with a flat rate that we discussed during our first meeting and he has held to that even though 2 of the cases seem to be a lot more difficult than we thought. But, he is not giving up on us. Any other lawyer would have continued to charge us more and more & honestly would have thrown their hands up and given up a long time ago. Josh & Mike have had to use very creative ways to help my husband. From our very first meeting to the meeting we just had last week, Josh has given us hope and kept us informed as to what each of our next steps are. Unfortunately, when it comes to minor children in separated households, the battle seems to be never ending unless one person gives up. We know as long as we are willing to continue to fight, Josh is willing to stand by our side & help us. Even when we are thinking we should just give up, he let us know that we still have other options. We are extremely thankful that they are helping us. read more
