When I told everyone I was going to Worcester for the weekend from Edinburgh, I got a whole lot of…read more"WHY?"s. Well, here's one reason. Jerk. The outdoor seating at The Firefly... on an evening in England where the day had been 26 degrees (got Celsius!) made me think that maybe, just maybe, if all of England was perfect like this everyday they would still rule the world. The colonies would want to be owned again (sans slavery and oppression etc.). But I digress, that shit will never happen... so we need to ignore this ideal of a perfect England, and just take the pub as a perfect pub. Reasons for perfection: (see photos) The front room: fireplace, antique chandelier, old tyme-y lampshades, big red velvet couches, a moose head over the fireplace and ARE YOU F**KING SERIOUS - Brooklyn Lager. My favorite beer in the world. And I know I am an exaggerator, and I know I say "my favorite (insert something here) ever" all the time. But for real, this is the greatest tasting lager of the entirety of the history of beer (in my humble opinion). The downstairs: Apparently they have bands down here, they didn't this night... but it was a proper looking porn-like lounge area with giant sofas and a good looking stage where you could definitely see some mediocre bands up really close before they sell out. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, the bands play outside. Yes, I said it. The MFing outdoor garden: I have this friend, his name is Jack Johnson, maybe you've heard of him. Maybe (probably) you're sick of him because most of his songs sound alike. It's also pretty likely that you'd give anything for his life, I know I would. If I had minimal talent like him I would totally move to Hawaii, surf and sing songs about making pancakes for girls and playing my guitar all day while working on my tan in a hammock. But again, I digress - why don't you guys stop me when I do that? - The garden here looks like an old fashioned surf lounge where guys with long hair (rebels!) and tattoos (scandal!) sit with beers and talk about waves. Jack, would fit in here... and I could even stand to listen to Banana Pancakes (once, just once) while I am sitting on the couches with my feet up next to the lanterns LOVING my totally chill life. Worcester is a two thumbs up all you naysayers! So there.

A perfectly good example of this pub chain…read more... O Neills in Worcester is an airy, clean pub which benefitted greatly from it's recent change of management and change of decor! The atmosphere is typically one which you would expect from this Irish themed bar - Guinness memorabilia on the walls, nice old wooden & tiled floors, and a good range of beers, ciders, wines and spirits. The menu can seem a little limited if you are a regular visitor for food. However it represents good value for money (especially the £2.95 menu) and it all tastes very nice. The service is friendly and, if you're a regular (which I am whenever Wales are playing rugby!), then you're treated to additional perks such as table service, which is worth it's weight in gold when the bar is packed! O Neils offers a good variety of live music during the week, and also at weekends (I can thoroughly recommend going to see Jim Fox if he's playing there!), details of which can be found posted on the walls around the pub, so you always know who's playing and when. The bar can get very busy at weekends, or during football or rugby matches and is probably best avoided then if you're the sort of person who enjoys being able to hear themselves think! However the atmosphere is always that of people having a good time. All-in-all, a great little 'no nonsense' kind of pub. It doesn't pretend to be overly posh or pretentious, and instead concentrates on providing a decent pint and good honest food. In my mind, that's spot on.

The Guinness alone is worth visiting for, but the food is pretty good too. Friendly staff and nice…read moreatmosphere add up to a really good place to have lunch.

We went here for my works Christmas do. I have to say that…read morethe food was spot on and the waiting staff did a really very good job. However. It did lack atmosphere. The coat rack was just some random rail in a corridor and no where big enough for all the coats so half of them ended up on the floor. Although the company gave us drink vouchers, once they ran out it was up to people to buy their own and the drinks were expensive; London prices. Took quite some time to get served drinks at the bar which was frustrating. The heating was on above us and we were sweltering, they did turn it down eventually. Overall, a lovely dinner with food waiting staff, cost wise acceptable for the company but too expensive for the more junior staff, and it was reminiscent of having a school disco in daylight.....

Plus the aural delights of Morgue Orgy,Flayed Disciple,Kremated,Anihilated,Shrapnel and 15 others? Sign me up my good man!! So only 2 weeks after Bloodstock we found ourselves driving south again to get our Thrash on. Beermageddon is held at the Stoke Prior Sports and Country Club (Posher than it sounds) in the village of er,Stoke Prior, just outside Bromsgrove in the W Midlands. It's only a small Festival mainly catering for the smaller or unsigned Metal bands, which is great for me as i'm a bit of a champion of the smaller acts. The Fest only holds a few hundred people, which makes it seem more like a 3 day party with friends than a Festival, which is great. The bands played inside the venue and we all camped on the playing fields just outside,we were camped and parked (yes you can park next to your tent) less than 100 yards from the club, meaning a very short stagger to and fro, which is always handy. The calibre of bands on offer this year were top notch as far as my tastes go (they were all from the more extreme end of the Metal spectrum) and the attendees were all awesome, some really good friends were made and contacts gathered, and because pretty much all the bands were small they were all camping too and not an ego in sight!! Jim Beerman, the organiser ,knows how to put on a Festival, and you can be pretty damn sure that we will be back to get battered, bruised, baked and blasted next year.....\,,/.....
