Stokes croft chicken!
Sophie H.

Bristol is begging for a house music playing bar like the Love Inn. It's the perfect location, it's got a nice look outside and in and it's run by some people famous for great tuneage. I eagerly anticipated it opening and was hugely underwhelmed by the reality. I've tried it a few times on a Saturday night and just felt like it's got no soul; I can't put my finger on what's missing but something is. However, I went yesterday with 10 friends for a late afternoon roast dinner and we had a lovely time. The food was good, the crockery was on trend (blue and white dishes for the cauliflower cheese, a jar for the gravy, etc) and most importantly it felt cosy and buzzy in there. I had turbo island chicken and it was lovely. It came with a huge fatty patti type Yorkshire and loadsa veg, including the all important red cabbage. My friend had the beef and it looked yummy. I had proper food envy. Because we had eaten at 6ish, after we'd finished the evening turned into a bit of a party! It's called 'back to ours' and a great DJ came on, the lights were dimmed and the cocktails came out! I have a new love for the inn!

The Love Inn could be thee venue that most successfully epitomises Bristol culture: great food, chilled vibe, buzzin' atmosphere, hipsters and hangovers and some of the best music in the world! The Love Inn is run by Team Love! the guys behind Love Saves the Day festival, the WOW stage at Glastonbury Festival, The Garden Festival in Croatia and the almighty Futureboogie record label - pretty big credentials and clear that music is the heart of this bar! They have gigs every Friday and Saturday night that pull big crowds. Sundays weekly gig is called 'Back to Ours' which provides sunday grooves for those not ready to admit that the weekend is coming to an end. The focus for gigs is on House/Disco/Electronic music and they bring big international acts as well as well known local DJ's. Unfortunately I missed Neneh Cherry a few weeks ago which I was gutted about! You'd be forgiven for thinking a music venue wouldn't deliver when it comes to food, but by day and early evening The Love Inn's kitchen throws out some amazing diner-style burgers and pizzas. The burgers are served in baskets, cheese rolling down the sides and all held together by a cocktail stick so they don't fall over. They have several different burger options, my favorite so far is the Bacon Swiss. A few of us shared some pizzas a couple of weeks ago which were also really good. My favorite was the chicken one (cant remember the exact name though, sorry) Fancy a Rum Tickler? was the response I got when I asked if they sold cocktails. I love rum so this cocktail hit the spot. I cant remember what was in it (probably because I had 3) but it tasted amazing and was served in a large glass with handle - which is better than the poncey glasses you get in some places. The decor is casual diner-style with boothes and tables. The walls have really cool arty wooden paneling, kind of log cabin style, but not - if that makes any sense! I really like the fact that they have big green plants around and 2 on the DJ booth. As a lover of house music, great food and unpretentiousness - The Love Inn couldn't be more up my street! I cant wait to see what they have in-store for summer!

The funky look that greets you from the pavement.

Based in the middle of Gloucester road, it has a fair bit of competition. In fact, over the last few years there have been quite a few burgers restaurants open in Bristol, but Atomic Burger offer a really different, fun experience. First things first; the restaurant is comic book themed. Everything from the walls, floor, menu and windows is covered in marvel-style comic book pictures. That obviously makes it a great place to take kids, but you'll also find lots of couples, groups and students. It's probably not the best place for a business lunch. Me and my girlfriend went for the first time yesterday and it was great to sit outside and make the most of the sun. We sat on the same table as another couple and got chatting to them. They had been to Atomic Burger MANY times and were on a quest to try every burger on the menu. If you do then you get 20% off for 12 months. Just ask for a sticker after your meal and if you collect them all you get the life discount. The couple both had cocktails that had a bottle of Sol larger upside down in the glass - I didn't care what it was, I wanted one! After ordering "whatever they've got" it turned out to be a 'largerita' which was SO good! The Sol slowly tops up your margarita as you drink - genius! I'm a sucker for a gimmick! The menu is big and actually a little bit confusing. I went with the LLAP: beef burger, pulled chicken, blue cheese sauce, Louisiana hot sauce and spring onion. It was amazing! I had the garlic and chilli fries which were also really good. The best thing for me though, was the beavers jalapeño mustard. Mmmm, beavers jalapeño muuuustard!! A must try if you like spicy food. We left, met some friends at another bar, and then went back to Atomic Burger to show them the largeritas. I'm not sure if I'll eat there enough times to get the 20% life discount, but I'll definitely be back!

The food isn't exactly diet friendly, but who goes to a burger joint for salad? There's absolutely loads of choice so you can pretty much have anything you want on top of your burger, and you have the choice of chicken, beef or veggie. All the burgers are named after famous characters and the menu looks great. There's some crazy drinks on there too - from bacon milkshakes to lageritas (a personal fave!) My boyfriend ordered the hot chicken wings recently. He was warned they were extremely hot but he can handle spice so he went for it anyway! What followed was hilarious! One bite and he was sweating, dizzy, couldn't feel his lips and not feeling so clever anymore. We since found out they are made with three of the hottest chillies on earth! They had over a million Scoville units! They do takeaway if you don't want to sit in (or you've got someone you can send to pick it up and bring it to you in bed with a hangover!) They also do a mean hotdog! I had a hotdog with red onions, American cheese sauce and pulled pork the other day and it was yummy! It's quite a lot of money for what it is (£10ish a burger) but you get a naughty, messy meal that's delicious! I took my 12 year old nephew and he loved it because it's something a bit different! My 30 yr old mates also love it for the same reason.

The only issue here was the fact that it's full of uni kids filling the room with either sounds of gender fluid dolphins or how drunk they were last night... The Burger Joint is amazing. You get to choose exactly what kind of burger you want with tick box sheets and pencils given to you as you sit down (think ordering breakfast to the room in a hotel and you get the idea) and it means there are literally thousands of different meal options available, something for everyone! The quality of the ingredients is superb and full of flavour and texture, I can honestly say it was one of the best burgers I've ever eaten and the sweet potato fries are to die for. The ambience is warm and the dimmed lighting makes it feel intimate and a great place for couples or groups of friends to relax and enjoy a good meal together. The service is attentive and relaxed, adding to the overall excellent experience.

Whoever invented these knew the perfect combination of flavors though, they were fantastic!! I also ordered the Rodeo burger (before I knew how big the fries were) and that was the best burger I've ever had, just amazing. We sat outside on a long picnic table because all the tables were full inside. There were already people sitting there and it was so nice to speak to people in the community and get to know them. And it's back with BIG food. Although pulled pork is 'in' at the moment, the Hobgoblin do it very well. Huge rolls filled with Mexican marinated pork with slaw and pickles on the side. As well as the big pulled pork rolls they do mountain sized burgers that look deliciously threatening; cheese rolling down the sides and buns shining from the grease. But the best thing on the menu is the 'Dirty, dirty fries' which were 'born out of a hangover'. The Dirty, dirty fries are a huge mix of fries, pulled pork, melted cheese and spicy sauces. They really are amazing! The Hobgoblin has a food challenge called 'The Kraken'. I can't remember everything that's on it but it involves lots of meat, dirty fries and chicken wings. I don't think anyone has completed it within the hour yet. Their pulled pork is smoked on site, burgers homemade and meat locally sourced from a Gloucester Road butcher. Probably bought with Bristol pounds and wrapped in an evening post, too! The decor is casual and the bar serves your normal lagers, beers, ciders, cocktails and shots. While the emphasis is on the food at the Hobgoblin, you'll still find a few groups just there for drinks. This isn't a first date place but it is a great place to meet mates and tuck into great, dirty food.

In the past few years my idea of a burger has been completely flipped, turned upside down! With the introduction of brioche buns and baconaise (what sweet sweet genius came up with that one) I have been outstanded. The location of Chomp is great, loads of parking around, especially if you know the tricks of the trade ;) it's a modern yet chilled interior which really really worked for me. The right light levels and music volume so you don't overhear other people's comments and you can spill and bit of food on yourself and no one will notice. That was a big bonus for me, especially if you sample their brilliant range of ciders, ales and lagers. Staff were very friendly, great waitress and chef was a friendly bloke! Prices were so reasonable, £10 for burger with fries and slaw (no idea what happened to Cole from coleslaw, poor bloke) and drinks were a fair price too. They also do promo nights where you can get burger, sides and a drink for £10 or something. They also do specials every now and again, the other night was a Stilton burger - sounded perfect. But for your first time you always have to go tradition, the house special. Your classic burger with only some onion rings on the side. Perfection. Would definitely recommend, I am really finding it hard to find bad places in Bristol lately, competition is tough but these guys have hit the nail on the head. Bye bye Gourmet burger Kitchen

Very cool interior - stripped back as you'd expect in a steak place. I love the simplicity of the menu - a few steaks, 2 burgers (3 if you count the veggie - which I never do) and a few classic cocktails, plus wine and beer. I went for my favourite cocktail - the classic old fashioned (shame they didn't have barrel aged, but hey that's just me being a pretentious d*ck). Perfectly mixed - a beautiful bourbon kick but not too overpowering, just the right amount of orange flavour and very refreshing. Starter was 3x black pudding beignets - and as a bit of a black pudding fiend, these sated my cravings very nicely indeed. Perfectly battered, not too heavy with a delicious garlic and chive mayo. Bliss. Having found out it was national burger day too late, I went for an 8oz fillet, with blue cheese sauce - obvs. The whole experience was world class. Steak was a perfect medium rare, with a beautiful char on the outside. The seasoning on the chips was exceptional. And the blue cheese sauce - oh man. Just phenomenal. Plus a delicious side of mushrooms and spinach. I couldn't resist hitting the bourbon tasting board - and I definitely don't regret it. 3 excellent drams, all of which had complex and very different flavours. A nice touch offering something a bit different to go with your steak (hic). The standout definitely being the Woodford Reserve Rye - mind blowingly delicious. The Bookers blew my tits off. 63.7%... WHAAAT. Accompanied by a 2/3 of the house IPA - perfect amount of hop and washed everything down nicely! Overall a superb experience and I will continue coming here at every possible opportunity when I'm in Bristol.
