This review is in regards to the microblading class I paid for and attended with Joi Mebane, owner of The Look By Joi. The class itself, I feel, was a total loss--loss of my money. She was completely unprepared, not as knowledgeable about the subjects covered, and wasn't as experienced in microblading as I had thought. The handbook was ill prepared, lots of misspelled words, no indication of what chapters would cover or where they began. I was thrown off by her unprofessionalism as she walked into a room of students, late, and greeting us all by cursing and smiling as if this behavior was ok & we were all her close friends. Throughout the class she even noted and mentioned aloud that she was unprepared. Our microblading kits were not worth the money she claimed them to be ($250)...she even offered to send us "brand new kits". I received mine and it was the exact same kits we received during class. I researched the exact same items and all items amounted to about $10 total. She wasn't able to give any information about the pigments in the kit, which is extremely important for clients in the event someone is allergic to the ingredients. She wouldn't tell us where it came from or what ingredients they contained. I figured she didn't know what they contained which made me even more skeptical. At the end of the class, most classes give students a product list of what they will need when stepping out on their own, and where they will need to purchase products and tools at wholesale prices. She told us that "she wasn't giving us her "plug" and that we should just contact her to order anything." I was disappointed for so many reasons after she said this...she couldn't tell us where the pigments come from but wants us to purchase something that could possibly be toxic to both me and my client. During her live model demo she failed to cover the most important step of all, the consultation. She should have at least role played this step and asked her client questions. In result, she she didn't and the client failed to mentioned that she had been drinking the day before and she bled heavily as she demonstrated her technique for the class.
After paying as much as I did for this course the students should have been set up to complete at least an additional 15 clients after class, but that wasn't the case. We didn't receive certificates immediately after class, & I personally had to hound her by email for 2 weeks to receive mine. When I did finally receive the certificate it was printed on plain white paper & the ink is clearly faded. I felt that after paying this much for this course and with her profiting as much as she did from the students we couldn't even have our certificates printed on a nicer, heavier paper worth at least a $1.00 a sheet? In addition to all of the cursing she spewed during the class, being late (over 30-40 mins late, may have been more; handbooks were being printed by an assistant as we sat in class waiting to begin), unprepared, not being able to relay pertinent information during the class--just plain not knowing and being able to teach the class subject, among other unprofessional things the class was a big loss of money.
Hopefully this review is received and changes are made for future students. I felt, including a few other students, this was one of her first classes and we were the test dummies. I paid $$$$ a big chunk of money only to feel like i didn't learn anything in the class. Until then I would not recommend this course to anyone. read more
