Until this current school year, we were satisfied with our experience. In fact, we actively recommended them to other families. I can no longer do so in good conscience. Distance learning during a pandemic is difficult for all involved, both staff and students. My daughter began this school year doing distance learning. She was not doing well at all; she struggled. We requested extra help for her in the form of a detailed daily schedule to follow, since both parents are also working full time. The school instead gave her daily one-on-one time with the founder, Ms. Betty. Even with this daily help, our daughter was not completing her work, so her father and I were spending evenings checking on her assignments in Google Classroom. During this checking, we came across a story that had been assigned to my daughter's class for a reading comprehension assignment. This appalling story is shown in the pictures attached to this review. After a moment of "does that really say what I think it says?!?", my husband and I decided to email the school's administration and the classroom teacher. We were already very frustrated because of our daughter's distance learning issues, so my email was direct and to the point. This is racist. It is unacceptable. Why is your school using a 50 year old reading curriculum? What other overtly racist stories are in this curriculum? Why isn't the classroom teacher reading what she is assigning to students? I expected to receive an apology and a solution. What we got instead was the most unprofessional email I have ever seen to come from a school administrator. The administrator agreed to research a new reading program to purchase based on the age of the materials, but then told us that we had accused them personally of being racist and that that was offensive. No apologies for the content of the story. No "oh my goodness, I didn't realize that was in there". No admission that the story was unacceptable. Just defensiveness and blame-shifting. We requested to be released from our Spring tuition contract, and that request was granted. We withdrew our daughter and enrolled her in public school. We had paid our tuition in full through December, so we are out several thousand dollars, but felt that this was the right course of action given the circumstances. For the record, we do not accuse any individual of personally being racist. However, racist materials were clearly present in their curriculum and were distributed to students. We believe other parents should be aware of this incident when they are making decisions about how to educate their children.

The one upside of this school is the community and Ms.Matchett, she was the one teacher who actually helped with my missing assignments and wasn't rude to me when I'd lose focus during class. Another thing that can affect your decision to apply here is that once I had a science teacher who tried to fail me for no reason and almost kicked me out for moving my chair "too loud." They have both gone downhill and are failing classes here due to burnout from the overwhelming amount of homework given daily (and over weekends) and also the bullying going on here has gotten out of control. I know it's everywhere but I thought it would be better here where it's smaller. It did start out better but over the years, unfortunately, they don't do anything about it and all the good kids leave and all the bullies stay. Horrible experience with special Ed here. They were fake and trying to convince me that they cared dearly about my child and wanted what was in his best interest. Believing they were only trying to help him I agreed to everything they recommended which isolated him from friends and made his depression and anxiety worse. Believing they were on his side I made him stay longer making him endure even more harassment by staff as well as bullying by students. When he told staff about students harassing him he was ignored. When I brought it up I was told he was lying and making it up (NOT oh, we will look into it). When I told them he felt targeted by staff they said he's delusional. The staff would unnecessarily escalate him to create a situation or excuse to send him home every day so they wouldn't have to deal with him. (When over stimulated he would put his head down on the table and practice what his therapist taught him & the staff would touch him and shake his shoulder which we discussed in meetings not to do because it made things worse) They would call me at work and exaggerate what happened so I would come pick him up immediately, such as telling me he barricaded himself into a classroom and they were going to call the cops on him when it turns out he actually was standing outside the special Ed classroom door wanting to come in and they where standing on the other side not letting him open the door (his IEP stated he was able to leave regular class if he got overwhelmed and go to special ed room to reset). Or telling me he has stabbed himself with a pencil and is at the nurses station when he actually scratched his hand with a broken pencil during an anxiety attack because they wouldn't give him a break or stop touching him and they were purposely escalating it. Then they played dumb and said they didn't realize he was having anxiety attacks and thought he was just being disobedient and not following directions. Which I believed until they kept doing the same things over again the following week after having a meeting about it. When I questioned them for escalating him to the point of self harm and not giving him a break (which is in his IEP). They don't answer but redirect me to look at his pattern of behaviors (behaviors that only happen at school and not at home, behaviors caused by them escalating situations when he is having anxiety attacks). They want all of their students to fit into their perfect little box and my son doesn't fit, he requires a lot of extra patience. During one of my meetings with faculty, Mrs Audello (the principal) had the audacity to compare my son to a mass school shooter and said that's why they need to keep suspending him and do investigations before he can return (he has never made any threats towards the school or brought anything inappropriate to school and they search his backpack every morning when he arrives at school) I am happy to report I have pulled both of my kids out of GHLO and they are now both homeschooled online through Acellus Academy. My special ed son has done a complete 180, they both have all A's as well as my son has not been hospitalized for depression since leaving that school, he does go at a slower pace than my daughter who finishes her classes early in the school year as my son usually keeps working on school all through the summer.

My daughter loved her old school and was quite disappointed when we told her that she was going to a new school. However, after 4 months, she has acclimated well and have nothing but good things to say about her teachers and classmates. She finds the work challenging and exciting. The school has taught her and our family a new way to approach reading. They teach Latin and have poetry wars. They also have an after school program that is an extension to their education and not just babysitting. The after school teachers help with homework and pick up is until 6 pm. They also have after school clubs with nominal charge. What is most important to my family was the school's faculty and their program for kids with special needs. My son was diagnosed with a rare disorder in October, that affected him neurologically. Some of the staff from school and after school program visited him, including Mr. Brogran (assistant headmaster). We love his teacher Mrs. Laird. She is a smart, kind, and loving teacher. She visited him in the hospital twice. My son had missed 2 1/2 months of school from being sick. Ms. Ernest (teacher), has been so patient in teaching him at home. She has been an important part of his education. We drive to school at least an hour twice a day, sometimes longer. We decided to move closer to the school since our kids loved being there.

Safety is not a priority…read more While the curriculum is great the policies and staff seem to be subpar. We've had a few incidences while our child has been attending this school from first grade to third grade. One of which involded a non teacher (Mr. Koonce) photographing and recording students without authorization. On the contrary, we had requested that our child not be in any school photographs, other than the yearbook. However, Mr. Koonce and the school failed to uphold this request as only certain individuals are allowed to use school equipment to take photos and videos of the students for marketing purposes. The outcome of this was that our child was not in any of the photos/videos which we were glad to hear but we do not know if the other parents were informed. We were told that a training was in place to prevent this happening again. As for the second event that is currently taking place. Our child informed us that 3-4 girls ganged up on her to jump her while at recess. The 3 adults that were "watching" over the kids in a very small playground with virtually no obstructions did not notice a group of kids huddled around another. Upon contacting the school Ms. Tamiko informed us after talking to the kids they had concluded only one kick between our kid and another was exchanged. This was different from what our child had said so we pushed for the school to review the camera footage. We were then told that the cameras were for the safety of the building and the school was not able to review that footage. This is infuriating because with that footage, we would be able to get a clear story of what actually took place and who were the culprits and who did what. I want to clarify that me nor my wife wanted to see the footage we wanted it to be reviewed by an admin. We were told this is not possible which makes absolutely no sense because in the event there was a serious crime as a weapon on campus or a child being abducted you would imagine that footage would be reviewed immediately. And rightfully so however it doesn't seem that this school prioritizes the safety of their students whatsoever I understand policy is policy, but when dealing with kids, you would think that the policy would be catered to them. Please consider this before picking this school as there is no guarantee your child is safe nor the teachers are trained adequately.
