This marker is to the east of the city of Bozeman and points out the history of the nearby pass…read more The marker reads, "Sacajawea, the Shoshone woman who guided portions of the Lewis and Clark Expedition led Captain Wm. Clark and his party of ten men over an old buffalo road through this pass on July 15, 1806. They were eastward bound and planned to explore the Yellowstone River to it mouth where they were to rejoin Captain Lewis and party who were returning via the Missouri River. "In the 1860s John M. Bozeman, an adventurous young Georgian, opened a trial from Fort Laramie, Wyoming, to Virginia City, Montana, across the hostile Indian country east of here. He brought his first party through in 1863 and the next year guided a large wagon trail of emigrants and gold-seekers over this pass, racing with an outfit in charge of Jim Bridger. Bridger used a pass north of here. These pioneer speed demons made as much as fifteen or twenty miles a day-some days. The outfits reach Virginia City within a few hours of each other. "In December 1883, the Northern Pacific Railway completed a 3,610 foot tunnel under the pass. By World War II, the old tunnel was badly deteriorated and couldn't handle the the bigger railroad cars of the time. The railroad began boring a new wider under the pass in February 1944, completing it during the summer of 1945. The new tunnel, which is still in use, is 3,015 feet in length." The road widens here so there is room to stop and read the marker. Just be wary of the trucks coming through here who need to check their brakes before continuing down towards Bozeman. The city of Bozeman should take pride in this place buy out all other business' in the plaza & make this an ACTUAL science center that's FUN for all ages. Ya'll should Google Orlando Science Center, follow their blueprint, & then you can charge what you charge. They geek out about the evolution of the tablet and how far computer memory and storage has come-and you can see some of the early iterations of computers here! It may not be the most interactive or hands-on museum, but it does help bring some of the textbook information to life, which is pretty cool. Even coming from a nerd.

They offer military and other discounts on their entrance fee The gift shop area includes information on local, current mining operations as well as merch. This is an outdoor museum so dress for the weather. If you want to take the under ground tour be sure you are wearing closed toed shoes. (Crocs not included, I don't know why) They also have above ground tours. Part of the property is set up like a western town. Something that would grow up around a mine. Post office, apothecary, carpenter, blacksmith, etc, etc. All these buildings are set up with window displays but most are not open to the public. You just peer thru the windows. There is a memorial garden to miners. A mine yard with pieces of heavy equipment. The motorized lift, miners locker room, light room, information and equipment used in dry and wet boring, 3D representations of mines and more with information posted on the displays. You can walk up into the mine head if you are so inclined to see how the ore chutes operated. We spent about two hours here without realizing it. Very interesting museum. Staff are very personable, answered questions and suggested reading material for more on the subject. Very good, family friendly stop.
