There is also a seperate decking area outside with wooden tables, benches and heaters to enable customers to sit outside on a sunny day or to smoke. It has the usual traits of a weatherspoons with cheap drinks and a 2 for 1 on main meals. Not all of the the meals are included in the 2 for 1. There is plenty of choice and they are always trying to improve the menu by including more vegetarian dishes and low fat options. The food isnt bad for what you pay, nice for a quick bit to eat or lunch. Staff are friendly. There is limited parking at the back of the building but there is also parking on the street and a free car park down the road.

When I finally made it a priority to visit, I was far from disappointed. As you whiz past it on the B5130 in Alford it always looks cosy and welcoming, grand and solid. Perfectly in keeping with the houses of Alford, most of which were built as a designed village in the mid-19th century by Sir Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster. The architect was John Douglas and the place has a very unique feel to it. As a side issue, Eaton Hall is just outside the village and can be partly seen from the road, on the left as you exit Alford towards Chester. It was reconstructed in 1874 by the Duke of Westminster and he built a large chapel with a bell tower that bears a stricking resemblance to the better known Big Ben clock tower. It is reported that There is no place like home was played on the bells each time the Duke approached the house. So back to the meat of this review With wonderful open fires, mismatched furniture, excellent beers and wines and a mouthwatering menu, this place is definitely worth a visit. It's a stones throw from the A41 and about a 15 minute de-tour from the M53. Personal recommendations include their delicious homemade beef burger (about £9) and divine bread and butter pudding (£5). It's at the upper end of the relaxed gastro-pub dining spectrum, and rightly so. If I had to be picky, the only down side about this fabulous pub is that someone has to drive to get there! The staff are welcoming and informative. You can sit in the slightly more formal conservatory or the bar area. And there is a lovely garden at the back, away from the road. Dogs are allowed, well welcomed in fact, in the front bar. I'm already looking forward to my next visit :o)

After 7pm there is security on the door and you will not be let in with trainers. A couple of people have tricked their way in by putting black socks over their trainers! But an easier way to get in is just to remember to wear shoes! Trainers are fine in the day. Inside the decor is nice and welcoming, everything is kept clean and staff are efficient at collecting glasses and cleaning tables. The food is quite nice, a bit more expensive that the other alternative pubs in the area but the surroundings are a lot nicer so its worth paying the extra. In the summer months they sometimes do barbeques outside which is a welcomed change and there are tables and chairs outside to sit in the sunshine. But beware on sunny days this bar does prove very popular and getting a seat outside can be near impossible as people tend to stay there all afternoon!

Sadly the food and the overall experience were disappointing. The food: For mains I ordered the spiced chickpea, aubergine & spinach burger and my partner ordered the roasted vegetable tart. When they arrived I must admit that we were both shocked! The burger was absolutely tiny as was the bread it was served on. 90% of my plate was completely empty except for an artistic smear of dairy-free pesto. Likewise the roasted vegetable tart sat in the middle of the plate without any accompaniment whatsoever. My burger was, at best, average. It was much like the sort of breadcrumbed frozen vegetable burger that you get at most supermarkets and the pesto and tomato dip, whilst quite tasty, did not do much to prevent my disappointment. The kale and cauliflower couscous salad that was served with it was also tiny, bland and if anything made the whole course even more dissatisfying. The roasted vegetable tart was tasty but, to repeat, it came without any accompaniment! Imagine ordering a pie at a restaurant and it arriving, sat in the middle of the plate, without anything other than a few smears of pesto and tomato. Both main courses were circa £11 each. The dessert was more impressive and we both ordered the apple pie (our first choice desserts had not been available). We asked if they could swap the raspberry coulis that it was meant to come with for coconut milk sorbet which was reluctantly agreed to. As I say, this course was much more enjoyable and the portion size was acceptable. Service: When we arrived we ordered drinks at the bar before being shown to our seats. During the course of our meal we weren't asked whether we wanted to order any further drinks and the service generally was poor to average. Very young staff who seemed a little out of their depth. Other Comments: When we walked into The Cheshire Cat there was a stool to the right of the doorway with a laptop on it. Clearly this was used to show bookings for both the restaurant and the hotel. I know this as the screen was on full view and I could see the name of everybody staying at the hotel, eating in the restaurant, checking-out that day etc etc. Not very professional and probably in breach of data protection laws! Prior to booking I noticed on the Vintage Inns website that 3 of their restaurants (2 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and 1 in Northumberland) were showing under North WEST England rather than North EAST England. Obviously they could be missing out on customers because of this so I emailed them to make them aware of the errors. They have now updated their website but I have not had any correspondence thanking me. Kind of sums up their service overall! Summary: Laughable portion sizes and average food. Disinterested service. Not recommended.

Along the side of the pub runs the Shropshire Canal so you can go for a nice walk after your lunch to help the digestion. Its dining room is very stylish with big mirrors and fireplaces.
