The Independent existed in a print edition for thirty years, from 1986 until their final printed issue on March 26 2016. It now lives as an online edition. Between their app and the website, it has a monthly reach of nearly 23 million.
The Independent came to top of mind today when I got dinged by Facebook for posting a picture of one of their articles. Who remembers OBL? Back in 1993, Robert Fisk managed to interview him and the headline was "Anti-Soviet warrior puts his army on the road to peace." And there's something that sure didn't age very well at all.
You can usually find the Independent landing on the pro-market side of economy issues. Otherwise they are rated as left-center with medium credibility, per mediabiasfactcheck.com. The paper is owned by a former KGB officer with a 30% stake by a Saudi businessman since 2017. That may factor in to things, I don't know.
The Independent also features as a regular in the Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso thanks to actor James Lance who plays a journalist. The running gag is that he always introduces himself in the press room as "Trent Crimm, The Independent" who is critical of Ted's coaching but still remains a fan.
I'm not a regular reader of The Independent but their articles show up here and there as I research current events, seek other sources of information and alternative viewpoints.
