THIS REVIEW IS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE "RUSTIC" CABINS INSIDE THE PARK AND OWNED/OPERATED BY THE PA STATE PARK SYSTEM. THERE IS ANOTHER PRIVATE CABIN BUSINESS OUTSIDE THE PARK WITH A SIMILAR/IDENTICAL NAME We stayed in the rustic river cabins (R1 and R6) They are classic log cabins almost 100 years old built from American chestnut. We are not actually campers so two nights was probably enough for us. There are large front porches on each cabin of varying design. Some porches had roofs while others did not. There are multiple beds and bunkbeds in each bedroom. The kitchens are equipped with full refrigerators and full gas ranges and a microwave. You have to bring your own coffee pot. There is no internal plumbing at all. Water was accessible at a spigot outside of the cabin next to the porch, but I do not know if it was safe or drinkable. I recommend bringing along a few gallons of bottled water. There was no sort of a sink or drain either. So tasks like washing dishes, brushing teeth, etc were awkward even if you had water. I suppose it's because they don't have any sort of drainage system. ‍You really need to bring dishpans or buckets. We used paper products for pretty much everything. River cabin 6 had an outhouse a few feet away across a small parking lot. There was a larger running-water shower facility downhill from us (a five minute walk). Again, we were not experienced campers so the lack of running water was definitely something we couldn't get used to. Each porch and cabin came with internal and external picnic tables and benches, but you might want to bring your own folding/camping chairs. There weren't even logs to sit on around the fire ring. Firewood was readily available on site within the cabin area. Also highly recommend bringing along a fan as cabins can get quite warm on hot days. Did lose electric one day so as many rechargeable things as possible would be very advantageous. The park itself is beautifully maintained and really a great place to enjoy the Clarion river and hike in the hills of the surrounding Cook Forest with well-marked, well-established easy/moderate trails. We took the Longfellow trail into the forest area known as "The Cathedral" to see some of the oldest growth/uncut trees on the east coast, if not the entire US. Pale Whale activity rentals was a short walk/drive away where you could rent kayaks, canoes or floats. The river was very low when we were there, but we did the 2 mile float trip which was just about 2 1/2 hours and perfect for our group. ($15 pp) One of the units (R6) had a bat inside one night and the other unit's (R1) front porch was besieged by some kind of bee or yellow jacket which prohibited us from eating outdoors at that unit. That said we still managed to have a great time and ate very casually on site. We had intended to go out to eat at least one night at a local establishment, but that never panned out. Alcohol is strictly prohibited on site. I found little or no information or reviews about these cabins online prior to booking so felt we were really going in blind but still happy that we did it. To check availability or make a reservation click on the https://pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/ website. Choose Cook Forest State Park then choose "Rustic cabins" under the campsite type pull down. It's a very user UNfriendly website IMHO The cost was approximately $250 total per cabin for a two night weekend stay in August. As far as I could tell, none of the River cabins actually had a view of the river, although it was nearby brush and trees prohibited the view.

For miles. Tip #3: Don't over-pack. Riverside gives you almost everything you could possibly need and it's awesome - firewood, dishes, etc. DO pack dish soap, a dish sponge/scrubber, paper towels, bathroom soap and trash bags. We forgot. It was sad. Tip #4: Bring lots of grill-able food, s'mores ingredients and beer. We did and it was glorious. Tip #5: Plan to go tubing. Forget canoeing; the water is just too shallow for the most part. Tubing is AMAZING. The signs say "no alcohol," but I'll let you decide whether or not to obey that one... We took the 2.5 miles journey (approx. 2.5 hours), but could've stayed in the water for days, it was THAT wonderful. Bring as many beverages as you can possibly handle and maybe a snack or two. Tip #6: Don't plan on a great shower. The water pressure is, well, not great. But who cares? Don't shower at all and go primal. Tip #7: Bring great company. I went with 6 other friends and we had a totally memorable weekend. Have a dog? Bring it! The cabins are pet-friendly for a very nominal ($20 charge). Cashier Cindy from the Dry Goods Store gets 5 stars all by herself. We had a brief emergency situation during our stay and she could not possibly have been any more helpful. The staff is so welcoming, we can't wait to see them again next year!

Been coming here most of my life. I made an extremely disappointing discovery this weekend:…read more They have a partnership with Devil's BBQ in Brooksville Pa. I feel this is a very important piece of information for anyone who is deciding whether or not to spend their money here. When I saw the sign on the road I guess I thought it was just a generic bbq sign. I didn't recognize the logo. After walking around a bit it just seemed familiar but I couldn't place it. When I tried to engage with the clerk they definitely dodged all my questions. They don't operate the restaurant attached to the store/gas station/cabins. They just let them operate there. Definitely a big disappointment that they're sharing space. When I decide where to spend my money I take honestly and transparency into account. They're hoping the world forgot. They want to serve food at the location but not have to deal with the food service aspect. They want all the traffic that comes with that but none of the stain of the reputation. Nope. I will no longer book any cabins or make any other purchases at the store or gas station as long as they are leasing space and profiting from this other business. Any attempt to bully me to take this review down will only be taken to social media in a big way.

I called about 2 or 3 weeks before the date we were to arrive to reserve a spot, and the staff was very friendly! I ended up calling back and asked to be moved to a different spot to be closer to everyone, and it was easily changed without question. We arrived late, around 930, and checked right in at the main office. Once again staff was very friendly and helpful. They went over the events for the weekend(it was Christmas In July) and mapped out how to get to our site. We made our way to our site and I will agree that the roads are pretty terrible. They have not been kept updated, but its a campground, so can I really be that upset? Streets do not have named clearly marked that I saw, which I thought was weird, but the map was easy enough to follow. Our site was close to the highway, and all the trees had been cut down so you could hear the highway traffic. The sound really was not terrible at all, but I wish they had lined the boundary with trees or something else to help make you feel more campy! Also had no shade the next day, which was terrible being it was 90 degrees. The way the sites were set up was a little weird as we were in a tent and didn't need hook ups, but our site was next to a camper with full hook ups and a swampy mess on the other side. Again, not a huge issue but the maps were not correct. Site was very level and clean though with a nice fire put and wooden table. The bathrooms were ok. They were cleanish, not very large, and not updated. There are 4 sinks but only 1 soap dispenser which I thought was strange. The showers were small as well. Only good thing is that 90% of the people here have facilities in their campers so the bathroom is never busy! I am guessing that is why they haven't really been updated, understandably so. There was also laundry in the same building as the bathrooms. The pool was very nice! It was crowed, but clean and they had 2-3 lifeguards on duty that I saw. There is adult swim every hour for 15 minutes where only adults, and kids under 3, can swim. Pool had a slide as well. The arcade was a fun little place, but it wasn't kept up very well and the games were expensive. We did get some food and ice cream at the cafe that was cheap, but yummy! Now to the worst part of this place - the GOLF CARTS! Oh my, how I wish to never see another golf cart in my life! This is not a camp ground for people who are staying for the weekend or a few days, this is a camp ground for campers who have permanent sites and are here all the time. I honestly feel like 90% of the sites here are like that. All day, every day, you have golf carts driving up and down the roads. Was there any reason for them to be down by where I was camping? NO, absolutely not. It is kids and teens joy riding, or adults trying to be nosy. Maybe they need to build a golf cart park so these kids have somewhere to burn of this need to drive around for no reason. It was so annoying. I would not recommend this campground for anyone who isn't going to stay a while. It is clearly a campground for full time campers. For that reason alone, I will not be coming back here.

Big Country campground is the worst campground I've ever stayed at!…read more The owners Bill and Mary are miserable. They just go around the campground yelling at the campers. You can tell that they enjoy yelling at people. They yell at campers coming in 2 min late or when young adults are driving their quads. Most of the time you can smell alcohol on them at night, when they are yelling at you. Unless you're in their friend group you can expect to be picked on. You never can depend on the bathroom/shower. They lock them all the time so they don't have to clean them. The water at the campground is unreliable. The campground runs out water often. They do not have well water only spring water. Because of the water problems the washers and dryers are turned off. The swimming pool has needed repairs for several years, and the owners are too cheap to fix it! There is only a few activities for the campers on select Saturdays. Except for the little kids playground there is nothing for the kids to do.

My wife & I had tent camped here a few times & stayed in a cabin once well over a decade ago, and it lived up to and surpassed the fond memories! We had a really nice warm welcoming basket with some treats & a note. I absolutely loved the view out of this cabin. All the amenities! The dog park was fantastic to let our girl run around. We all had fun in the game room, especially with the air hockey table and the ring game on the wall. The kids loved the pool, the Gaga Ball pit, & the hot tub. My son & I played the giant chess game. It was great to buy firewood right on site, the store is stocked up on everything you might forget, and the ice cream hit the spot! We did a lot of cooking over the campfire, but breakfast was great with the oven/stovetop and provided pots/pans/etc. We hope to be back soon & often! Came here to review & found my OLD one from March 24, 2013! (Full text below.) We've been to this campground a few times for tent camping over the summer, and we just stayed in a cabin for the first time this past weekend. We stayed in the Allegheny cabin, and it was awesome. Gambling that the first weekend in Spring would be good weather, we lost. The ground was snow-covered, but it certainly didn't put a damper on the weekend. The cabin was beautiful, cozy, warm, and incredibly clean. The kitchen area was well stocked with an assortment of cookware and utensils, and there was a great grill & fire ring outside. We made great use of the fire ring to make s'mores even though it was quite cold! The owners are extremely welcoming and friendly, and be on the lookout for one of the camp cats, Oliver, if you'd like to make a new furry friend!
