This review is solely based on my recent phone conversation with The Healthy Chef. By no means is this review a reflection of the quality of food The Healthy Chef provides (as I did not order from them), but only my feelings towards the poor level of customer service and business management this business executes.
I am in the process of hosting an office grand opening for my family, and as it is my first time doing so, I was in the process of calling different caterers to receive a quote and food selection plan. As I was assigned this task last minute, being that the event would to occur in the next 4 days, I wanted to first make sure that the caterer I spoke to had the availability to accommodate.
I had called 2 other caterers prior to calling The Healthy Chef, and received caring responses to my slight nervousness of putting together an event in short notice. One kept the conversation shorter, only taking down the necessary details, in order to pass it along to the catering coordinator so that they could get in touch with me later in the day. The other, who was already the coordinator, asked me more detailed questions (ie. date, location of service, # of people, food allergies, particular food preferences, and etc.). She made me feel taken care of and ended the call off with a reassurance that she would be able to put together a plan first with a few menu selections that she feels are the best fit, and we could work from there through email.
When I had called The Healthy Chef, they picked up and I explained the same spiel and was met with a cold response "you need to check our website." To which I responded, "the website healthychef.ca on Yelp leads me to an unclaimed domain." He then says, "well that's from Yelp. It's wrong. It's thehealthychef.ca."
uhh...there would have been other ways of saying it nicely? The tone in which he said it, made me, the prospective client, feel like I WASN'T doing MY homework, which in reality, if there was a mistake with how Yelp portrays the business, the owner should actively have the corrections amended.
Further to that, I asked him if it was possible for him to email me a menu selection plan if I could give him some details about preferences, # of people, etc., as I wanted to make a decision today once I compared the catering options. He then said, "well, I don't know what you want. Everything is on the website. I think you should go with the other caterers as we don't do that."
umm... so as an "expert in the catering field," if you are not in the business of asking the prospective client questions on their event to help them with their planning, why should they choose YOU?
With that response, I thanked him for his time and that I would look elsewhere and hung up.
My concluding thoughts from this conversation would be:
1) The business needs to understand that they are not only a food provider, but the business also crosses paths with customer service and and logistics planning. They need to improve on these aspects.
2) Tone of voice. Yes, how the food tastes is a make or break situation for repeat business. But equally important, is the way you treat prospectives. This client is pro-actively looking to give you business, you should try to earn it. It's all about developing a relationship with your clients as they would then be inclined to recommend you or hire you again for future. read more
