The Haven at Pismo is an amazing place. It has literally saved my life and helped me to get back on the right track. The staff here are excellent. They are loving, caring, helpful, supportive and very friendly. They have helped support me through my hardest moments and always are willing to work with me no matter what obstacle has come my way. Their homes are beautiful and comfortable. The therapists are so caring and really listen to what you have to say. I have been to a few treatment centers and of all I give this one the 5 stars it deserves. It amazes me this business can stay open. These people don't care about you, they just want your money and charge an incredible amount for their dog and pony show. Take a chance to read the reviews from ex employees, that will tell you a lot. Living there was a nightmare, the houses are ruled by the most dominant addict in the house. I could go on and on about some of the crazy things that I went through there but I'll leave that to other reviewer 's or maybe send in a part two. What made me reach out was receiving a bill from them for $400.00 six days before my one year anniversary of sobriety, a little anniversary present for me...so bad. The Haven is a wonderful inpatient program associated with the Dr. Ken Starr Addiction medicine practice. My son has gone through the inpatient program, and is now attending the outpatient group. The NAD therapy approach is a new compassionate treatment to detox from the substance being abused. The Haven's houseing is first class and well staffed by professionals. The team effort led by Dr. Starr and his amazing staff of counselors, house managers, and Julianne Bachitt the Clinical director is revolutionary in this field. They actually care. I highly recommend this facility to anyone seeking substance abuse treatment for themselves or a loved one. read more

Update: * The staff member at the female residential home who helped discharge me and the racist female client she favored ARE CONFIRMED OLD FRIENDS FROM THE TOWN SHE USED TO LIVE IN! * That staff members boyfriend who worked at the male residential home was let go (reasons unknown) * The detox staff member who fell asleep on the couch every shift was let go due to the complaint If you're reading this, good luck. We were pleased with the treatment portion of this program. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the administration. It's as if the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Being a new program, possibly they are experiencing some growing pains. Not very good at returning calls. More than once, when a progress letter from the case worker was needed for the court, re: treatment, it was not completed as promised. Had to be proactive and continually phone The Haven to get promised documentation. read more

We didnt even get admitted into the program. We were misled by the phone interviewer! Mistake perhaps. What really irritates me is the fact that they denied admittance to my wife and promised to give us some referrals... NOTHING! That's been several months ago! Look, stuff happens... but dont promise to help someone then just drop it! Crappy customer service! Honestly I dont think very many if any of these rehabs are in it for the right reason.. what does matter to them is $$$, not the human.. my opinion read more

The Haven has been a godsend for me. My stay at the detox home was the most pleasant and comfortable I have ever been detoxing off of opiates and methanphetamine. The staff here actually gives a fuck about the residents despite what the other people who have shared say. Seems like they are more but hurt about some personal issues with other residents and not getting "their way" like a kindergartner so they try to dump their anger out on a shitty Yelp review. Grow the fuck up. This institution carries out their mission just as they claim they do. I personally would refer them to anybody who's in need of a better life away from the poison that's ruining it. THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO! The one word that comes to mind when I try to sum up my experience with them in a whole would be COMFORT!! And when you're kicking dope that is the ONE AND ONLY thing that matters! The Haven has more comfort to offer than any of us need. So if someone says some bullshit about insurance and a 17k bill then it seems to me that's their fault for not making calls to verify what they were trying to do. But either way I'll bet that asshole had first class treatment and the most comfortable detox he ever could have imagined having. If you want SOBRIETY and you NEED your life back this is the "first tool" and the "best tool" you could have in your hand to start building your foundation! If group settings aren't your thing and you just won't make it another day in life if your Tighty Whitey underwear mysteriously go missing or somebody happens to use "your" conditioner in the shower then might as well keep getting loaded because no treatment centers do one on one everything and no residential rehabilitation centers offer you a private room and bathroom. So Grow the fuck up and look at the big picture....... SOBRIETY!!!!! Thanks for having me all you wonderful people that make the Haven happen! I did a three week stay at The Haven, and can honestly say it's a mix of positive and negative....some of the counselors and the psychiatrist are pretty subpar. Some of the counselors are outstanding, but the ones who do most of the groups in residential are unfortunately pretty lazy in my opinion (lots of YouTube videos, Ted Talks, repetitive games) but the AOD specialist and a few select others are beyond insightful and wonderful. The Peer Support Specialists (house mothers) are all FANTASTIC and provide a very comfortable and loving environment. All of them go above and beyond for the clients. The psychiatrist is also somewhat lazy in my opinion (prepare for weekly zoom meetings online rather than formal appointments). The rest of the staff (chef, yoga instructor, personal fitness trainer, etc.) are all very friendly and are a great addition to the staff. I can say that I definitely cherish my treatment and was able to recover from a horrible downfall in life. I recommend The Haven, but be sure to advocate for your own personal needs and speak up when you feel they aren't being met. Overall, great treatment center, especially compared to most, but could use a little working on, specifically in the psychiatry and group therapy aspects. read more

I too have mixed feelings about The Haven. I would have loved to give it at least a 4, but some issues lowered my overall rating. First, you are initially swept in while in the pit of your addiction being assured that everything will be as presented. You are quickly encouraged to sign, and whisked away to a beautiful, safe detox house. This was an excellent aspect of the program, as detox can be extremely tough and scary. They give you appropriate medications to ease the withdrawal, provide meals, and you just rest for a few days. My stay in detox was 3 days, but this varies individually. Phase 2 is the residential portion, also a very nice house with up to 5 other women. Lunch and dinner are freshly prepared daily and groceries are supplied for breakfasts, snacks, etc. There is a pool and jacuzzi (sporadic heating), an exercise trainer and yoga instructor. Here, life is very structured and consists of morning chores then group meetings with DOA counselors and therapists throughout the day. Free time and exercise/yoga are in-between, and in the evening, outside meetings, such as AA and NA. There is always a "house mother" on staff who dispense meds, transport us to meetings/outings, and provide general support and assistance. My experiences with them were all excellent! My first jolt came early on when another client was being "moved on" after only 2 days! This was a shock to her and all of us there, and to this day I don't know what happened, as I never saw her again. I can only surmise that it may have been an insurance issue; which brings me to the sticky part of this program. I was under the impression that the inpatient portion would last 28 days, as many of us were told this. Once you're in, you quickly find out this is not the case, and it varies depending on your insurance. This was never explained upfront and left me feeling vulnerable and apprehensive not knowing how long I would be there. Most of us had less than 24 hours' notice when it was time to leave. My original paperwork stated that I was signing to an "agreed upon length of stay", but this was not the case and getting a direct answer out of anyone was nearly impossible. I was only told that it was up to our insurance. I was even told to exaggerate my symptoms if I wanted my insurance to authorize additional days. Basically, you don't know exactly how long your treatment will last, and this was my biggest point of contention. Between Phase 1 &2, I stayed three weeks, which I felt was adequate. At this point, you have the option of Phase 3 Inpatient or Outpatient. The inpatient is a sober living house which is not covered by insurance and for the women, it is a sub-par living facility. The cost was $1,500/month and the women's house was small and they seemed to cram as many people in as possible, so I opted out and chose to stay in my own living situation and attend outpatient meetings. Outpatient consisted of PHP, IOP, and weekly individual therapy sessions which were all great. PHP was daily group meetings from 9:30 to 3:30 and IOP was 3 times a week from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Again, how long you stay in this phase is determined by your insurance. I did 5 weeks of outpatient, and was approved for additional visits, but I chose to go end my program and move on to my own home and personal therapy. Here, they do seem to want you to stay as long as insurance will keep paying for it, but the sessions were becoming redundant and unproductive for me. I spoke with my case manager over the phone, and that was that. No formal discharge charge or plan for continuity of care, although there are weekly alumni meetings for life, which is nice. I never met with the medical director in person, only two brief Zoom meetings (mostly for medication), and I felt there should have been a better exit plan for such a life changing experience. On the positive side, life changing it was! Overall, I am very happy and grateful that I went through The Haven's program. I got a lot out of it including life tools and coping mechanisms that I will carry with me forever. I feel strong about my recovery and positive for the direction my life is going. I have been out now for 2 weeks and feel good, but basically on my own. There have been no follow up calls or emails, and that is disappointing. The Haven is relatively new, and they are still going through changes; I can only hope they are positive ones. They do not include any type of contingency program for relapse as some facilities do. and considering my insurance has paid out over $100,000, I think they could do a better job in being a facilitator of long term patient care. They are pretty much the only inpatient facility in town, so it's a good choice for many, just not the best for all. read more
