Whenever I travel, I make a point of scheduling daily workouts to balance out my increased food intake- my recent trip to Boston was no exception. Booked a class online for this studio, first class was free. Arrived about a half hour before start time and staff were helpful, location is clean- I really like the welcoming, body positive atmosphere here. There are little notes and signage up about mental health awareness and eating disorders, and the class instructor made a point of emphasizing both correct form and incorporating the theme of confidence, which was cool. The workout was pretty solid. I do dislike that the bikes used in this studio are very basic and do not come equipped with any sort of tracker for distance or resistance. Also, both riders on either side of me had difficulty with setup because bike seats kept sliding despite adjustments. The instructor was friendly and the playlist was good, bike shoes are provided, would work out here again. Small location gets congested transitioning between classes, with no real area for changing clothes- bathroom has 2 stalls and 3 showers, little room to move around elsewhere, so plan ahead.

So I've taken plenty of spin classes in my day, but never at a boutique studio before! I'm a die hard Orangetheory gal and have been for almost 2 years, so I hadn't tried anything new in a while when I signed up for a class for charity at the Handle Bar. I LOVED it. Honestly-it felt like a club. The music was excellent, the lighting was captivating, and the coach was motivating and friendly! All of the spin classes I had taken before were at gyms, so basically you just adjust the resistance when the coach tells you to and maybe take your butt out of the seat a few times. This was not like that- all sorts of movement, crunches, and even a weight involved! Honestly I had no idea what I was doing but wasn't too embarrassed because it was too dark for anyone to see. I definitely plan on coming back! This class inspired me to take a class at handle bar and other fitness studios twice a month to switch it up from my usual routine. Thanks handle bar!

Great workout, amazing instructor. Only complaint is the space is very small and you're not provided your metrics from your ride.

Im not into running so being able to cycle for a more intensive cardio is such a great and fun option. The music, changing paces, various movements and weights keeps the class fun! To access the studio you enter through a door on the side of the building that says "FITROW" and go to the second floor. I knew I needed someone to tell me what to do at a workout, or I won't have the motivation to show up at all. I was introduced to CycleBar and they offered a free class for first timers so I went with my friend! I was absolutely hooked! I think it's my 5th month now and after trying out several instructors, I found my personal favorites! I highly recommend Britt, Nicole, and Leah, and Ali! I love that every instructor has their own style and they are so encouraging in class. The space is always clean and they have free shoes to use! There's also a water bubbler, and towels for use at the studio. After taking classes at CycleBar, I tried other spin classes around Boston. They were fun but I love how CycleBar sends you your stats after every class, which most studios (if not all) don't. This motivates me to push harder and try to improve from my previous classes. Parking is also free (if parked under 3 hours) in the garage, which is a HUGE plus for me.

Derek and Regan are my favorite instructors for different reasons. Derek is great at creating a class that mimics an outdoor ride. Whether we're modeling our workout after part of the Tour de France or just taking on a series of hills, I always feel like I left with a great workout. Regan always choose fun, upbeat music that helps you to power through her drills. I feel like sometimes a class can be repetitive, but the music and her attitude make the class go by pretty quickly. I also recently tried a Wednesday 6am bootcamp class that meets outside at Conway park. I'd never worked with the two instructors (with Sean + another instructor who I hadn't met before). I normally DESPISE bootcamps, and it can suck being the new person to a group. But the instructors had great attitudes, were really funny, and made the class enjoyable by changing up our activities frequently. It involved a lot of partner work, but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. AND--I felt twinges in my abs from all the planking for at least a week afterward. (Which means I should probably do this class more often.) The only downside to these classes is that I would really love another 6am spin class (although obviously not possible if the indoor space is already in use). I feel like a lot of people would do a Friday AM spin class if it were offered. I'm giving 4 stars mostly because I've only found the 6am spin class to be the one class that I really consistently attend, but the Training Room is an awesome place to take classes if you want a low stress, low-commitment trial with a new activity.

Depends if you're comfortable with that while you're in a 45-60 min class. - I love everything about this place except the location. I've attended classes at Flywheel, SoulCycle, TurnStyle, Ride NorthEnd, and Bspoke just to name a few so I do have a pretty good perspective on the local spin studio landscape. Charlestown Cycle is a small operation so I don't think it is right to compare them to the big studios as they obviously don't have the same budget and ability to draw talent as Flywheel or Soul. Keep in mind that the classes are about 1/2 the cost of the big studios. It's true, they don't have a dedicated receptionist and typically the instructor arrives 15-20 minutes before class to open up the studio. Every time I'm there the shades are drawn so no one can look in and they have switched the hand weights to barbells. The bottom line for me is that they are very friendly and conduct pretty good classes. My fav is 6am Monday or 6am Friday class with Alex. She's so peppy, funny and picks good music. I've also ridden with Sara, Colleen, Jenn and Allie and all are solid spin instructors. The space is clean, well maintained, and has a changing room/bathroom, no shower though. They have plenty of towels to help you mop up the sweat your will produce in their classes and a water cooler so you can stay hydrated. I'm usually there 1-2 times a week and keep coming back even though I have a monthly membership with another spin studio.

I tried my first SoulCycle class this week because I've heard so much about it over the years and…read moreI've always wanted to try it out. For my class it was a Taylor Swift themed class, which I knew I was going to love. That I think really made the experience for me because the playlist was awesome and because I am comfortable in spin classes. I was able to just follow along and get a great workout in. I did enjoy how the class has dimmed lights, and you're able to just tune out and focus on you while kind of being lost in the sea of everyone around you. I guess that's the soul part. I also liked that they provide each bike a towel at the beginning of class. And they do have great amenities in the restroom for cleaning up and going about the rest of your day. Now a couple of things I personally wasn't a super fan of: 1) how loud the class was. The music was blasting, and while I was having a good time, I found myself having a hard time hearing both during the class, and I left the class with my ears ringing. So for me a tip for the next time we'll just be to wear earplugs. 2) you are very close to the people around you and you can't do anything about it. I didn't mind too much that the bikes are assigned to each person. It makes sense for classes that have 50+ people in them like SoulCycle does. However, you are very close to the people around you, so if you have any sort of space issues, this may not be the best class for you. It worked out for me but if you come in after a lot of people are set up and you're in the back you definitely have to do some maneuvering to get to your bike. 3) the cost. Was it the best cycling class I've ever taken? Honestly, no. The cycling experience for me was awesome from a workout standpoint and the class had great vibes. You have the ability to make the work out what you want from the resistance to taking your own modifications. That said, you can definitely find other cycling studios that will give you a great workout, great vibes, and a similar experience for half the cost. But SoulCycle offers a great option if you can afford it and there's one close to you. there is a hefty price tag on these classes and memberships. On top of that if you don't own your own pair of cycling shoes, you will have to rent one of their shoes for $3 each class. That excessive cost is personally a major qualm for me because I don't think fitness should be that inaccessible for the majority of people but that's for another day. 4) can be offputting for beginners. Again, my experience was pretty great but I have to say if I had not had years of cycling experience, this class would not have been very friendly or accommodating for beginners, who might be new to cycling. I'm not talking about level of fitness, but just the comfort around cycling. I got there and was confirmed at the front desk and even by the teacher that it was my first class at SoulCycle. I was not offered any instruction on how to set up my bike, or clip in or clip off. I was never even asked if these were things that I might have wanted help with. I actually wasn't even engaged with by anyone in the class or by the teacher outside of confirming that it was my first time when I checked. For me it wasn't a problem because I'm comfortable in a cycling setting and I would have made sure to ask if I was confused, but I recognize that that's not always the case for everyone. In other classes, I've been in outside of SoulCycle. Typically the instructor will walk around to make sure any newcomers are set up and comfortable with the equipment. I was very aware that if I didn't know how to set up my bike, or was maybe newer to cycling in general I would've felt very lost in this class and intimidated by the lack of attention given to the newcomers. Overall for me, I would probably go again if it works out for my schedule. I don't see myself paying for any of the super expensive memberships anytime soon but I'm glad I gave it a try. I also would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to give it a try. I just am sharing my experience and noting things that I wish I would've known going into it so that I could set my expectations a little bit better in terms of the actual experience.

I came to SoulCycle for a Friday afternoon class through ClassPass. I've been to a bunch of other…read morespin studios in the area and I thought this one was pretty much on par. The instructor was really energetic and I definitely got a great workout. The playlist was also really awesome. I appreciated some of the small touches around the studio, such as the candles and changes in lighting during the class. The bathroom was also stocked with various items you might need like razors and such. My one main issue was that after your first class, you have to pay to rent shoes. I haven't seen that at the other spin studios I've been to, so that was a bit of a disappointment. Otherwise, everything was clean and the staff was friendly, so I'd recommend for anyone looking to try a class!

Lots of class options at different times and a good variety of music and themed classes. The coach (Alexander) was great. The workout was well-structured and had a lot of options to modify and challenge yourself during the workout. The inside of the gym was clean and they have complimentary shoe rentals that you can wear if you don't have your own cycling shoes. I really appreciated this, unlike other cycling places that charge ridiculous fees for them. I loved that there were smaller class sizes (like 20 people) compared to other cycling classes I have been to that cram 40-50 into the room. The smaller class helped me feel more connected and present. The instructor can actually see everyone in the room too, so it helps feel more friendly in my opinion. I really enjoyed my experience here and would come back to Handle Bar over other cycling classes in the area. Definitely a fantastic cardio option in Fenway! My first class was a Sunday morning class, and along with the sensory experience of the music and the light changes, the energy of the instructor and the class goers was CRAZY - definitely woke me up! I was surprised at how full the studio was (only 3 empty bikes). The 45 min class is choreo style, meaning you have a leading leg, ride to the beat of the music, and there's movements (e.g. 4 corners, tap backs), with about 5 minutes of arms using a weighted bar (it seems like everyone has the same bar) and stretching that begins 1.5 min until the end. The bikes don't have a monitor on it, nor a numeric number for resistance, so you follow the instructor's cues for how many turns to add on / go by feel. Pros: - Some of the most hype instructors I've seen recently! A++++ - The studio provides the cycling shoes! A++++ - Every bike has a towel on it! - Riders don't have to wipe down their equipment after (I think the staff does this), so it makes it easier to leave the studio. - Water fountain, ear plugs, hair ties, bobby pins, etc available Cons (minor): - For first-timers, it was hard to flag down a staff to help with setting up the bike because the studio was so packed and busy. - The studio is sort of small - the bikes are very much packed against each other and the hallway where people change their shoes and put stuff into lockers is narrow and gets very crowded. - Only two classes on Saturday and Sunday. Note: masks optional but vaccination required, so ride at your own risk

This yelp is for Matt and Maggie at The Handle Bar South End location…read more I hate cardio. Kind of always have. I took a class at the suggestion of a friend and I'm so glad I did. As I've gotten older (40 in 9 months but whos counting) I've been more into mobility exercises like barre and yoga. All with higher reps with lighter weights or body weight. Cardio but not really cardio. Long story long, what was working isn't fully addressing my current needs. I needed a shakeup and this foots the bill. I have loved Matt's and Maggie's classes. I love the loud music, and honestly choose my classes based on it and which if these two are teaching. I love how dark it gets in there so I can "recover" at my own pace between songs and I swear no one is looking at me, half the time I'm not sure I can see anything to my left or right...they do play with the lights (as motivation I assume), you're really only up against yourself. These two are so energetic and postive they really have changed my headspace...especially about cardio lol. My literal starting heart rate/zone was red/180+ on average. Not my Apple Watch telling me to calm down haha. My current heart rate/ zone is around orange/160+ on average after 2-3 classes over the last 3 weeks each...which in itself says a lot. And I burn 650-750 active calories which is about 700-850 calories per class. And it delivers the right amount of kumbaya for my taste. Not one for niceties but love a good..."if you're ready to stop you're doing great, stay in there, you can do anything for ...." That kind of kumbaya feels authentic and motivating. Matt and Maggie also have these infectious laughs and little anecdotes that making you stay in it. I love the indirect ways these two instructors curate their classes for what feels personally done for me...half personal introspection and half taking the piss. Like, they feel like friends...but the kind you call at the 13th hour to hide a body, you know, the best kind of friends. It can't be easy making a new playlist and new spin routine every single class. They deserve more than just this yelp review. Music 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5 Instructors 6/5 PSA: Because I'm new to the spin world, here's some helpful hints: You can get clip-in bike shoes there for no extra charge, so I walk in with socks and slippers. They give you a towel to wipe away sweat (also kinda nice to throw over your handlebars for extra grip). I like the higher numbered bikes, I can see the instructors better and I feel tucked away just enough. If you're looking to switch it up, spin has been wildly fun and effective. I love these two instructors. Take their classes specifically but I'm biased. Trust the process, it's been cathartic and beautiful. Thank you Matt and Maggie...for everything big and little you do. There was, however, the most equipment I had to get for the Sculpt class that I've ever had to get (a resistance band, ankle weights, a mat cover, a towel, and 2 sets of light and medium weights) which took up a lot of space. The class was also totally full on Sunday morning, so the room felt rather cramped. As a taller person, I had to stagger when extending my arms, and the mats were a bit short for me, so part of my body was off the mat, encroaching another row. The exercises were great, and I really liked the class overall, the energy, and the instructor, but the space was too crowded, and it might be nice to simplify the amount of equipment needed or not have to switch so much between putting on/taking off the equipment.
