No one!! Mark Murphy's School of Music takes an entirely different approach and is a wonderful experience, where you or your kids will be excited to learn to play piano, drums or guitar (or sing) and actually WANT to go their lessons. It is truly a special place - all the instructors are young musicians who have a great ability to connect with the students. When you're waiting in the lobby, the place has such a cool and friendly vibe. Mark himself is always there greeting parents and kids with high fives and fist bumps, while the din of 5-10 simultaneous lessons can be heard all around the studio. Such an inspiring energy when the students hear their peers learning! And the kids get to choose any music they like to apply to what they're learning. MMM even forms rock bands for kids who want take it in that direction and help them get gigs around town. Can't say enough positive things about this place!

While this is fantastic, what struck me the most was in the initial evaluation of my daughter. The instructor pointed out certain personality traits, why they are important to know, and how to work with those traits to help her develop into the musician she can be, given WHO she is. In all the years I've been a parent, I've never seen anyone spend time on this component. Calderone had my daughter so spot on. Knowing this kind of information allows the teacher to better teach the student. WOW is the only thing I can say. - Jen Romano

Last October our son Matt enrolled in guitar lessons at the SOR in Somerville with very little experience but I noticed a lot of ability which was quickly obvious after a month with his guitar teacher Kylan who is absolutely incredible!!! After a month, in November he also enrolled in a band program there and due to his age landed him in the adult band program "The Barrikades" which just happened to be led and instructed by his teacher where the way we looked at it, the more time with Kylan the better! After just 3 rehearsals, Matt was able play and sit in on a few songs at a house show they did... after 4 months he was able to play another house show doing even more songs with them... and after just 6 months at a recent adult band house show, Kylan had the confidence in Matt to play most of the songs on his own and all The Barrikades did an awesome job for a great entertaining show! It really is hard to believe this all happened for our son in less than a year and although some may say maybe it's due to more the ability of an individual, it really doesn't happen without the instruction and confidence Matt got and gets from his teacher Kylan. Megan, Ally, Hailey and the whole staff at the SOR in Somerville have been fantastic and professional to deal with... in fact Matt as a lefty guitarist (where it not being so easy to walk in music stores and locate lefty guitars)... one of the owners John helped locate a great lefty Jackson electric guitar and then a beautiful lefty Fender acoustic guitar which we then easily purchased directly through the school. This SOR location is truly amazing... I can't sing enough praises!!! (yes, pun intended)

AVOID. THIS SCHOOL !!!…read more My wife and 9 year old son decided to take lessons. We started in May and had a planned vacation for a month in July . The school has a rule you must give a weeks notice to cancel the lesson or you will be charged, this rule is fair as they have to run a business . We gave Jose plenty of notice stating we will be away for the month of July, We told Jose we will start back up August 1st. On JULY 30TH I call the school to confirm everything is set up as my son whose 9 was eager to start lessons again . Unfortunately know one answered the phone so I left a message and waited for a return call . The day went by no return call, The next day I call 2 more times and again no answer or return phone call . I say to myself maybe they are closed for vacation even though the voice mail says they are open. I give them the benefit of doubt that possibly they forgot to change the answering machine . Days go by no return call, The following week I again call same thing answering machine and no return call. Now frustrated and aggravated I EMAIL the school because 10 days have passed we missed two lessons and have rental guitars we are paying for . Keep In mind like every parent we have 90 things going on and the last thing we should have to do is constantly call a music school we are paying and get zero response . Kelly, Joses wife send me an email three days later explaining we have not kept your spot and the only times available are 8:00 at night . My sons is 9 and goes to bed at 8:00 on school nights, so how is that even possible !! I then write back again even more aggravated and then get a response from Jose the owner Jose starts off very nice explaining its his fault he didn't tell his wife he saved spots for my wife and our son. I told Jose exactly what we were planning when we left for vacation. I hate confusion and am very thorough. Jose then goes on telling me that he's very busy with summer camps and hes short staffed so he couldn't return a call or email for 12 days ? This aggravated me even more as I have my own issues and he seems to think his problems are now my problems! I then write him back saying its his responsibility to make sure calls are returned and emails answered. More importantly we have been waiting 12 days for a simple guitar lesson with rented guitars we are paying for . We rented the guitars to make sure my son liked the lessons before purchasing a guitar . Jose then sends me an email back stating "Because of my tone " we shouldn't work together !! What owner screws up then tells a customer because of my tone we shouldn't work together . This guy doesn't answer calls or emails .His wife tells me we do not have a spot left and I shouldn't be aggravated ? I guess Jose feels he can do as he pleases and if the customers do not agree and he doesn't like their "TONE" he will just say "Dont come back" Keep in mind my wife is ok going somewhere else, But you do not do things like this to a 9 year old CHILD. YOU SCREWED UP JOSE SWALLOW YOUR PRIDE AND APOLOGIZE ... STAY AWAY FROM THIS SCHOOL THEY DO NOT DESERVE TO BE TRUSTED WITH YOUR CHILD
