I have to say this would never have been my choice of where to eat in Morecambe, but it's a favourite haunt of, should we say, the 'older members' of my extended family so each December we return to The Grove for a family pre-Christmas meal.
It has a cosy charm in some ways, perfectly decorated for the coach-loads of OAPs who want to have a plate of traditionally English dishes somewhere close to but off the promenade. You won't find any continental options here.
Most of the roasted meats are on offer, most of the table went for beef, lamb or chicken. To be fair the portion sizes were very generous (even the child portions were massive), but it was a case of quantity over quality. The veg was over-cooked and there was far too much gravy on the plate (I'm a self-confessed gravy fiend, but I'd have liked to have poured my own).
It's food to fill you up, not to savour. It gets fully booked on Christmas Day though, so it's doing something to satisfy the masses. But it's not for me, thanks.
Tip: As mentioned above, ask for the gravy separately otherwise your plate will be a swimming pool of the stuff. read more
