Drinks are moderately priced, there is plenty of street parking, and the decor rocks. There are limited bathroom stalls but the restrooms were VERY clean. There was toilet paper and soap all night long, I don't think I've ever been to a cleaner rock venue. So happy about that! Cons:The stage is at a bit on an angle, so my friend on her wheelchair had trouble seeing even from the front row, but we were very happy the venue was wheelchair friendly.

I'm gonna start this out by saying that it absolutely kills me not to give this place 5 stars. It…read moreis an absolutely awesome venue, with great bartenders and cheap beer, and is a staple in the metal and punk communities. The reason that I am writing this is SOLELY because of a serious sanitation issue at the Oceano show that was not properly addressed. Some guy broke his nose in the mosh pit, which obviously can happen and is just part of the risk of going to metal shows, but he chose to be an idiot about it and bled all over every inch of the bathroom instead of using his shirt to stop it. All over the hallway, the bathroom floor, the toilet, the sinks, and the countertops. Every surface was completely coverd in pools of blood. To make matters worse, someone plugged up the toilet and people continuted to use it, resulting in a river of urine throughout the entire bathroom. This mixed with the blood, and created an extreme safety concern. One of the Grog Shop staff went in the barhroom and noticed this, but instead of cleaning it up, he just put an "Out of Order" sticker on the stall. The blood and urine was never cleaned up. Don't get me wrong, I get that most music clubs are all pretty run-down and filthy and it's to be expected, but this is absolutely unacceptable. Everyone knows that there are health department standards about bodily fluid clean-up, and the serious health risks that these fluids pose to patrons. I literally had to throw my shoes away when I got home and wash my feet, because the waste on the floor was so deep that it reached the canvas parts of my shoes. This is absolutely disgusting. Please do better in the future.

On nights when I wanted to just hang and play casual pool- it was there. Stumbling in after fourth meal; a good dose of quarter beers was always the perfect serenade or secret recipe for a useful break from studying. I miss the days when the DJ was never too cool to play your requested song. I miss PBR. I miss smelling like it after some guy, in attempting to score, doused it all over me. I miss scoring beer as a freshman. Of being a senior and scoring it for the under 21's., I miss losing a million and half things at the sko. I miss the townies, that would purposely bump into you. I miss the cage. I miss the Ricks, the Johns, and the Brads. I miss seeing half naked people crammed into the Sko, corsets, and thigh-highs in abundance. I miss it all. The hang-overs, the spills, the come-ons, and the hook-ups. The Sko is also home to some of the best concerts I have seen in awhile. It hosted amazing acts and for stellar prices- that still have me kicking myself as I throw out 20 dollars to see Eek a Mouse or the Black Keys here in SF. It's an Oberlin landmark.

And the club's official name is The Dionysus Disco but everyone calls it the 'Sco, and when I first got here, I was rather confused. It has a nice bar, with many wooden stools, and gives you the best view of the stage (this club isn't very big, so even if you sit by the bar, you have a great view of the stage). I got here rather early (an hour before the show started), and was able to loiter by the bar, have a few beers, and chat with the locals. They have 3 beers on tap: PBR, Great Lakes Dortnunder, and Rogue Dead Guy Ale. Since I didn't know if I would be back in this neck of the woods again, I tried the GLD, and did not regret it. Beer the way I like it: on tap, light, flavourful! But what really impressed me was the $1 PBR. You really can't top that price! They also had a huge selection of bottled beers, and also big beers including Avery The Reverend. I had a sip and wow it had a great hopping aftertaste and a 10% ABV. Needless to say, by the end of the night. my friends were pretty drunk. If I had gone to college here, I would be a barfly at the 'Sco! http://www.averybrewing.com/ http://www.oberlin.edu/stuorg/sco/home.html

Only a five hundred or so people all there for the same purpose. With it being a smaller venue, the acoustics are loud. Lucky for me I got some fancy ear plugs for shows like this. You really can't be upset at loud bass drums at a rock show and venue. Getting there early, I wandered around a bit to get a better lay of the land. I went to the bar to get a bottle of water. The bartender was very sweet and did let me know of the free water jug with cups, but I would rather have the bottle. I will definitely keep my eyes peeled for other shows there. Fun venue!

Since the Roxy and Mahall's are connected and jointly owned, I want to be clear that this experience reflects on both venues. While my friends and I were trying to find a place to stand, one of my friends was confronted by a couple who were upset that someone was standing in front of them. Instead of simply expressing frustration, they escalated the situation by "transvestigating" her--accusing her (a cisgender woman) of being transgender--and making several derogatory, bigoted comments. It was completely inappropriate and deeply unsettling. Because I've always viewed the Roxy and Mahall's as safe and inclusive spaces, I immediately went to security. Both I and another person explained what happened, but the only response we received was that they would "keep an eye on the person." Knowing that someone was allowed to behave this way without being removed made me feel anxious and unsafe, especially as a transgender person myself. I'm cis‑passing and was fortunate not to be clocked, but the entire situation shook my sense of trust in venues I've always felt comfortable in. I truly hope the Roxy and Mahall's take incidents like this more seriously moving forward. Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected at shows, and bigoted harassment should never be tolerated.
