Was so happy to get a chance to see the performance of As You Like It at the Van Aken Market…read moreDistrict by the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival. CSF has been putting on free outdoor performances for 26 years at various locations around Cleveland. This year the 2 plays being produced are As You Like It and Measure for Measure. The production of As You Like It is edited to about 1 hour 45 minutes without intermission, and has modern costuming and touches including cell phones and recent songs. The real twist is that a number of the roles have been gender swapped; especially interesting since Shakespeare provides characters that were swapping genders already and all roles were played by men and boys. Overall the production was fun, had nice energy and was just simple and casual enough to make it work with the outdoor setting. The actors were energetic and personable. The leads were especially good and members of the company played multiple roles. Even though they use Shakespeare's words, they manage to make it easy to follow the show and understand what is going on; they are especially good at hitting the jokes and generating crowd interaction. I would recommend giving the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival a visit for a lovely way to spend a Summer evening outdoors soaking in some entertaining theater. The price is right (FREE!) and the performances are a great way to be introduced to Shakespeare or to see one of your favorites. Check out their schedule and stop by when they are near you.

I showed up about 20 minutes before showtime and was able to easily find a parking space in their lot. Compared to a place like Playhouse Square, this place is a lot tinier, which makes the whole experience feel a lot more intimate. I'd love to come back and see another show!

Stopped by to check out the Comedy Jam on Sunday Nights at Coffee Phix in South Euclid from 7:30pm…read moreto 9:00pm. It was a nice friendly group of local performers doing a number of improv games and then a couple of longer form pieces. Coffee Phix is a relaxed space with a neighborhood feel. The performance takes place in the front of storefront. The performers are a bunch of people of various ages and levels of improv who really seem to be enjoying themselves. For those who know improv games, the night I was there they did Challenge, Change, Song and a couple of others. Some of the bits well quite funny, others were a little rough, but all of the performers brought quite a bit of energy and enthusiasm. They did offer to let me join if I wanted, so I will probably go back and give it a try. There were only a couple of people watching and this is an event that would be helped by having more people show up to either watch or participate. If you are a comedy or improv fan here is a chance to see local people who are practicing their craft. Give it a try, after all its free plus you can enjoy yourself and encourage the local improv scene. You can get more information at https://www.facebook.com/ClevelandImprovJam/

"A change is on the way, I can feel it for you." -- BKYLN: The Musical…read more I visited for the first time on the 17th of February 2024 to watch BKYLN: The Musical. The play was wonderful with many young, talented actors. It was about a young girl, Brooklyn, who is trying to make it as a singer living in New York City while searching for her father but living without her mother who died young in Paris. Brooklyn has to compete in a music competition with a rival and more scandalous singer and that's when the fun of everything begins. If you enjoy live singing and dancing then you would have loved this musical. I didn't get a chance to walk around the theatre after the play but I later read online that there is a cafe there incase you want something to eat or drink. I love that this theatre has a "Pay What You Can" payment structure to ensure that theatre is available for everyone. Thus, when you pay for your ticket, you can pay any amount that you feel comfortable paying or that you can afford. The theatre provides recommended payment amounts on their website to help you decide what to pay if you are unsure. I will certainly be back here to watch another play. **** GOAL of 150 reviews in 2024 - 12/150 total reviews in 2024 - 662 total overall Yelp reviews - Reviewed on 16 March 2024

Hey Yelpers, Here…read moreare the TOP SIX things you need to know about Something Data: 1.) Local improv can sometimes be sad but these guys were pretty funny and I definitely had a good time. 2.) I should put the emphasis on *guys* as there was only one woman performer when I went. The show would have been better with more diversity. 3.) About half of the audience is made up of those who have attended the show with friends and family of the performers being a large constituent. I'm not sure if this matters but I think it affects the vibe some. 4.) When I visited a local band called Vanity Crash played during intermission. They weren't all that great and were somewhat awkward to watch. Thankfully they only played 2 songs. 5.) The show takes place in the Studio Theatre in the Beck Arts Center where It can probably seat around 60 people. Everyone should be able to get a good view. 6.) It was $12 for 2 hours of live entertainment. A pretty good value in my opinion. I can't say I'll be going to every show but I would definitely check them out again if I had a free night. Sincerely, Neal

Local improv can be so hit or miss. I've seen maybe a half dozen Something Dada shows and in those…read moreexperiences it's been more of a hit than a miss. You never know what you're going to get and a lot of it has to do with the audience, not the performers. My husband and I were there on Saturday night. It was the smallest crowd we've ever seen at the Beck with maybe 20 people at most. There was a group of 4 high schoolers in the front row. They seemed to know the cast. Their suggestions were super annoying and my husband and I would roll our eyes every time they'd say something. So, I took matters into my own hand and started yelling out suggestions and they seemed to really run with that and appreciate my input. This group has been around for 20 years and in October they're celebrating their anniversary. It's been nice to see them grow into a location such as the Beck Center. It's convenient and it gives them a more professional environment to work in. Give them a chance on a Saturday night. For $12/ticket...we'll be back!
