Upon entering the door my heart must have sank looking at the old house. I though this is going to be a long night. The welcome was warm and friendly and John was funny. Which was a relief. He showed us the bedroom which seemed older. But as we settled we came to grips that this must be a century home. The hardwood floors, the ceiling, the crown moulding, the railings outside, the bathroom. It can be a museum. The bed was OK, but the room had character. Overlooking the river and some side small rooms also rented by the same folks. Please refer to the pictures to believe it. The living room (parlour then) was amazing. They have pictures of the original owners. The house built more than 130 years ago!! We also told the host that we were vegetarian no eggs and a vegan. The host still made amazing breakfast for us. Blueberry Scones or biscuits were the best I have ever had. I could just pay them to eat those biscuits. Again the hosts were amazing. Newfoundlanders in Nova Scotia exceptional hospitality

My family stayed in a unit in the house so I can only speak for it, but it was so adorable! The floors were a little creaky and I don't think soundproofing was fantastic, but the furnishings were old-school and very cute. The slanted ceiling, old wooden wardrobe, pictures and quilts, lacy curtains, and the washroom (with a shower and a separate old-style bathtub) had an adorable antique vibe. The size of the room was standard, but the washroom was quite roomy. I personally loved it! I believe it was a heritage house. It also had an amazing view of the harbour. Unfortunately we got in late and it faced west so we couldn't see sunrise, but I imagine sunset would've been spectacular! We also had breakfast there. If you're looking for fast grab-and-go this probably isn't the place (although I'm sure you can make arrangements), since there was just a couple as staff. However, the service was great and they were super attentive. The food was home-style and made on the spot to order, and coffee is freshly ground coffee beans pressed. It was a relaxing meal overlooking the beautiful view of the water. Would recommend a stay here :)

It is well set back and elevated from the main road, which in any case is never busy. There is ample free parking and it is entirely smoke-free. If you like rugged coastlines and fishing villages, this is the place for you (although there is beach nearby). Many rooms/units have a view of the bay. The proprietor grew up in the community, moved away, and returned, and is well-connected with the community. She lives in the Inn and is only a phone call away. She knows all the special places to explore. When we visited, breakfast was a satisfying continental buffet, with cereal, fruit, pastries, boiled eggs, yoghurt, toast, etc. There is no other regular meal service, but everyone recommends the Groundswell pub in nearby D'Escouse, a relaxing 10-minute drive away (at night, drive slowly and watch out for deer!). Although the building is old, the inn rooms are fresh and comfortable with all the conveniences. Each room has independent heat (no A/C but you would rarely need it--the screened windows open easily for fresh ocean breezes). You could not find a better place to stay in Isle Madame. If you are looking for a spot to host a family reunion or hold a small conference in a rural setting, this is the place!

Guysborough is a pretty village on the shores of Chedabucto Bay. Water sports abound! But I digress. Pepperlane is a block off the middle of downtown, so once you arrive, park your car and walk. There's a lovely patio for reading, contemplating, and snoozing. The lobby is simple and the breakfast room is off to the right. All of the guest rooms are upstairs and they are not accessible by wheelchair. Your welcoming committee could consist of the lovely Cali and Edgar, cousin Airedales, and most definitely will include either Elaine or Greg, your human hosts. The inn is a complete remodel. The staircase is wide, the halls are wide, and the walls straight, despite the building being over 100 years old. There's one suite with a dining area, fridge and microwave, and a private bathroom; two rooms with private bathrooms; and two rooms that share a bathroom. There's also a communal fridge and microwave for all guests to use, as well as an assortment of wine glasses. The shared bathroom has a tub; the rest have showers. TV, Internet, and bottled water are included. The bed was very comfortable and it's so quiet in Guysborough that getting to sleep isn't a problem. You pre-arrange your breakfast time when you check in. Don't be late! Your breakfast is ready for you when you said you wanted it, not a moment later. We had yoghurt, fruit, a lovely omelette with cheese and veggies, wheat toast, and lots of coffee. Elaine and Greg are great boosters of Guysborough and have a wealth of information about the town to help you get the most out of your visit. If I'm ever back in Guysborough, I'll stay at the Pepperlane.

The hosts are delightful and clearly enjoy conversation with all their guests. Our room was excellent with plenty of windows for fresh air and a very effective A/C unit when things got hot. The entire property is well appointed and the bed was very comfortable. We had a great night's sleep. Take the time to explore the old barn which is also a nursery. The old wood structure is quite beautiful and interesting. My one downer during our stay was that hordes of mosquitoes seemed to love the ceiling right outside our room (6). I'm very tall and have a bald head ... so I was not thrilled about that. However, I'm not sure quite what the hosts could have done about it. I didn't bring it up because it may have just been a singular occurrence with the high heat and humidity that evening. Bottom line? This place is a first class winner. Book here with complete peace of mind.
