It's great there's a place under the cinemas for a pre or post-movie drink, but I could take or leave the food really. We've tried a few dishes there over a few visits and nothing had blown us away. It's all just fairly standard stuff. The pizza will fill a hole in your belly and the toppings were nice but the dough is pretty average and threatens to ruin it completely. Salmon was fine, just not up to the level we're used to for that dish. We've had an interesting salad from the specials board a while ago that I recall really liking, but you don't really want to hang your culinary hat on a salad I wouldn't think. Will be back for drinks and hot chips kind of snacks next time I think.

But despite the bigger premises, Trotters remains fairly cozy and still has the wine crate decorations that I love. If anything, the larger space has made for slightly quicker service - it's not like it could have gotten any slower, I suppose. The menu is unchanged and as basic but reliable as ever - the chorizo gnocchi or any of the breakfast items are always good. I guess there is nothing outstanding about Trotters, but it still beats most of the other cafes on Lygon Street that are often overpriced, touristy and completely lacking in style and flavour.

The food overall is good but nothing to write home about. The overarching memory on each occasion has been the extremely long wait for food and the service being somewhat lacking. They appear to employ a large number of backpackers/ people with limited waiting experience. Things go wrong and you end up finishing up and walking out of there with an enormous sense of MEH, two stars. This is of course only based on their breakfast because that's all I've had. The atmosphere of Trotters is pretty nice and the menu has some good options. But be warned about the service. And don't go there if you are in a rush.

Google maps kindly took me in the wrong direction for ages and I rocked up for my reservation 30 minutes late and the hostess was so lovely and kind and understanding and she seated us straight way. To (unintentionally) add insult to injury, we were also the last to leave and the wait staff were so polite and didn't try to usher us out before we were ready. So professional! The restaurant is directly on top of an underground car park so parking is convenient and plentiful! From personal experience and from what I've heard from friends, The Groove Train has a pretty good name for itself and this restaurant is definitely part of that good name.

The pizza crust was very thin, but had very little sauce and it was unevenly distributed. The flavor on the pizza was bland and I added a lot of salt and parmesan to try to get it to have some flavor. The ambiance of the place was nice, especially the outdoor seating.

To the point we had to ask for one back because there was still a slice of pizza left. It felt a little rushed which isn't good if you want a Cruisey Friday work lunch but the food is definitely worth it. Another noteworthy dish is the gnocchi. It uses the same tomato sauce that is on the pizza but with the most pillowy soft gnocchi you could imagine.

It's cheap, where happy hour (between 3pm-6pm daily) means $2 pots, $3 wines and $4.50 basic spirits, so any afternoon on a nice day is made even better with a cheap knock off! Food wise, it's mostly pizza and pasta where most of the menu is around $10 so is not expensive at all. Is it good? Hell yeah! Even the breakfast menu is cheap but high quality where you can have the cheeky French toast with toffee and pears and its still all under $10. IF I had to be picky over anything, it would be the pricing. I do think some items were really high, especially for things you can easily make at home. Also, no effort whatsoever to attempt any substitutions with things in a dish. With that said, I'd definitely come back again. It was also a really nice touch that they gave me a complimentary cupcake with sparkler for my birthday. It just made the whole experience that little nicer still.
