Imagine this: over 20 years ago a teenage Teagin Henderson applied for, and was selected to fill, a position we had for a receptionist and general office duties. She lived at Paddington with her parents, which was a bonus, as our office, Lape & Partners, was located in Petrie Terrace, about five minutes away. We loved Teagin's energy, warmth and genuine nature. Then, one day, she told of us her desire to be a dog trainer and was moving to Melbourne to pursue a course degree in it, with an optimal view of working with our border patrol and customs declarations. But, and there's always a but, that didn't quite work out and she relocated back to Brisbane opening a dog grooming salon in Bardon. And while I admired the move and success she was achieving, my wife was the one who chose the groomer for our Westies, until recently. With her away overseas, along with our usual groomer, and our Westie Pippa in need of serious stripping, I had the liberty of booking her in with Four Paw. And, so, it's become full circle. We had Pippa in today for a stripping and she looks fabulous. The amount of hair removed is quite remarkable and she looks sleeker and fitter than ever, which she was but hidden under a thick coat of fur. It's a pleasure to see someone truly achieving their goals and dreams and then to reconnect with them to experience it personally. It is truly a humbling and awesome feeling and to think we were there, at the inception of Teagin's future thinking, and then to experience it today, was a fulfilling experience few will ever have. Well-done!

In between groomers, our four-legged charge had nothing to loose. I was lucky to be able to get a free spot. Let it be know these guys are popular and are, for example, already booked out for December. I took that as the sign of a good dog groomer. The second sign was how happy the furball was when he was picked up. He'd been able to wander the salon while he waited for us to collect him, and the cut was one of the best I've seen him have. And when they ask you to re-book for 8 weeks take it - they book out mighty fast.

The Pet Pad is total luxury for your pets! We took my sister-in-laws dog there for a Full Clip,…read morewhich is a hydro bath, shampoo, blow dry and brush, cleaning the ears and trimming the nails. Lola (the dog) has been shedding fur like crazy all summer, so we also got her a de-moulting/de-shedding treatment. In total it cost $55 for all of this. The doggy spa is a big room out the back where all the dogs wait for their treatments, and then get spoilt rotten and pampered. Lola was a bit scared when we handed her leash to the girl, but when we returned an hour later, she was totally loving the staff and this place. There were lots of other dogs for her to play with too. The Pet Pad offers other services including Pawdicures (pedicure for the paws!), Pet Day Care (either a half or full day of toys, treats, games, soft beds, in-house movies and loads of snuggles, awwww), Dog walking, Pet sitting and even house calls! The owner Emma is a serious pet lover and offers a luxurious service for your pets. Lola came out smelling so clean and lovely!

Plus the hair that I think is so adorable falling over his eyes must really be annoying for him. A Google search for "dog groomer brisbane" led me to many a website but none of them quite made me feel comfortable in my decision to let them groom my dog as The Pet Pad. Knowing the suburb it operates in, I knew there'd be no way the pooches of New Farm and surrounds would continue to visit here if they weren't good at what they do. I dropped him off yesterday for a "feet, face and tail" grooming session and after showing the staff member a photo of past grooming disasters to demonstrate what I didn't want, I knew, from her facial expression, we were on the same page. Less than an hour later I was on my way back to pick him up. The grooming a success. He still looked like a dog and not an old man with mutton chops. But like Sun E said in her review, the price is so very reasonable for the service. I would have expected I'd be parting with a lot more for the quality of grooming he received. Plus he bounded out to the car happy as Larry. A win all round. See you in a few months, Pet Pad!

Finding Paddington Pups was the result of a google search and a telephone call where a pleasant young man on the other end told me, "If you can bring him in this morning we can see him." I'd been searching for a new groomer for our pampered pooch after a less than desirable cut just before Winter. All I wanted this visit was a general tidy up, wash and dry (his visits to the salon sound all too much like mine!). Paddington Pups were able to see Dutch that day and it worked out cheaper than our usual salon. Cheaper doesn't always equal better but upon being reunited with my pup a few hours later it sure was in this case. The groomer had heard everything I said and trimmed his face without making him look like a dog without any facial hair. His feet were tidied and there was no great length taken off the rest of his coat. And while I'm yet to make use of it, they also have doggy-day care on site as well as a small range of pet food and toys.

The staff are always really nice and they sell BARF (food) which is handy and it's cheaper here then the other two options I have near my home. Some people think it's strange that my dog goes to daycare but it's important for his socialisation being a young dog. Also when you buy bulk you get a discount which makes it more affordable.

Think a miniature zoo…read morefull of utterly sweet baby farm animals (calves, lambs, goats, ducklings, piglets, chickens etc) set up in your own backyard! For my nephew's first birthday party, recently, my brother got Barnyard Babies to set up a "petting zoo" out the back of their house. It took me all my strength not to push various excitable toddlers out of the road so I could get to my favourite baby goat. (I totally bonded with him after he tried to eat my dress - I figured he had good taste). Most of the baby animals are orphaned (all together now: "awwwwww") and have been hand reared, so they're really comfortable with human contact. Hence they're not even slightly bothered by a bunch of squealing toddlers, nor various cooing adults. They're happy to let you pat them, rub their ears, tickle their tummies, talk nonsense to them and pick them up for a cuddle. There was even a pony for the smaller kids to ride. And at the end of the two hour "zoo" experience, some of the lucky adults at the party got to carry an animal each out to the truck. So I got to hold my favourite darling baby goat - who immediately put his little head on my shoulder and fall asleep. Which is so damn cute, I feel a tiny bit sick. In a good way.

I've been lucky enough to have experienced their cuteness several times at a local childcare centre. The animals, apart from being completely lovable, are always totally unphased by a dozen or more children running around their sizable pen, grabbing them by the ears, the legs and various other parts of the body. They will out of their hands and placidly subject themselves to 'cuddles' that seem likely to squeeze the life out of them. The only animals to watch are the goats, who will occasionally try to eat some poor toddlers clothes off while he/she scream in terror. As well as providing hours of entertainment, the Barnyard Babies handlers clean up after themselves and there is never any residue or odour left when they pack up. They also do a fantastic programme for childcare centres and schools with chicken hatching. They provide an egg incubator, small see-through chicken pen and a dozen or so eggs that hatch within a couple of days to be seen by the kids. At the end of the several week period, families are able to buy the chickens to take home and raise or they go back to the Barnyard Babies home. It's a great way for the kids to see a life cycle in action and provide hands on learning.
