It is located in the town centre of Holt in an impressive building dating back to the 1630's. I love the food hall because it has so much to offer - it has your typical range of staple foods from great brands but also offers fancier and more specialist foods. There is a dedicated section for health foods; vitamins, specialist diet foods (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, etc.), a wonderful deli counter with a wide selection of fresh foods, a good range of teas, wines, coffees, organic food, baking produce. The list is huge! They're also very competitively priced. Other sections of the store include; homewares (a very large selection of kitchen goods, electrical appliances, lighting & decorative items), household goods (which stocks bulk products such as Ecover!), perfumes, make up & beauty, womenswear, underwear, menswear, a book store and a cafe. I believe they also stock building supplies (as Bakers is a builders merchants) but I have never had to use that so I cannot really comment! It is well laid out with two main front entrances - one dedicated to the groceries and the other in the homeware. I believe there is also a back entrance for the building department with access to a car park but we are usually on foot! Each department has it's own section with it's own counter & staff so most of the time you don't have to queue, and when you do it is not for long (unless it is the height of tourist season, when naturally most shops become a bit overwhelmed!) It is much nicer than visiting department stores in the city, and Holt is such a beautiful town!

Lots of fresh fish appetizers and main courses. All of the main courses are large and filling plates. Go for the main courses, but do not forget dessert. I had the brownie with ice cream. It was probably the best brownie I have ever had. Local's say Byfords is known for the brownie. I took their word for it and now I know why. There is also a great selection of beers and liqueur, we rounded our dinner out with some lovely Scotch. They Deli, is also amazing. Byfords is a delicatessen, restaurant, and a 'posh' bed and breakfast all rolled into one. We…read morestayed for a few nights in the B&B in February, tempted by the opulent rooms showcased on the Byfords website. Byfords is right in the centre of Holt, and as such car parking is at a premium. The car park only has space for eight cars, but has seventeen rooms, leading to a bit of scramble for a space, it can get quite competitive! Failing that there a few public car park spaces to the front of the deli, or a large public car park about 200 yards away. This factor over all others, disappointed us the most; for such an expensive B&B, it seems short sighted to have insufficient parking. The room itself was an interesting mix of old charm and modern decor. A comfortable bed flanked by low beams and a rather impressive television, leading onto a small study area was complemented by a modern wet room with underfloor heating. Let down slightly by a dripping shower. Complementary biscuits, still/sparkling water, and tea and coffee were a nice touch, but strangely never replaced from one day to the next. The staff at Byfords were very friendly and helpful in all parts of the enterprise; as we arrived we were given a complementary coffee and choice of cake in the restaurant, a nice touch. Breakfast was served to the rear of the restaurant, and was impressive fare, particularly the smoked salmon and scrambled egg. The menu for breakfast was fairly comprehensive, and included such diverse dishes as kippers, as well as the legendary Byfords cooked breakfast. The only disappointing thing about the breakfast was the fact the venue was integrated within an open restaurant; call me old fashioned but paying a premium for the B&B room should mean there is a separate enclosed room for guests. We had coffee and ate in the restaurant on several occasions. The coffee is their own blend and is an eloquent combination of strength and flavour; their cakes, pastries and hot snacks are also equally impressive: the moroccan lamb pasty being a particular triumph. The evening meals though were less consistent, the first night's calzone lacked flavour and was fairly disappointing, but the atmosphere of the Byfords restaurant has a rustic charm, which makes it a perfect romantic evening venue. However, the second's nights bubble and squeak with smoked haddock was almost perfect, what a difference! The last part of the triumvirate is the delicatessen, a bustling place selling all the pastries, pasties and sandwiches sold in the main restaurant, as well as takeaway coffees, olives, cold meats etc. This is the real hub of Byfords, selling thousands of scones per week. In summary, an experience that had plenty of pluses, but a few negatives, that reduced its overall star rating.

The location is set in a small village which is not the easiest place to find. There is some parking directly outside although as with most places this is limited. Expect the portions to be small (e.g. pea soup in a shot glass) however this is not too much of an issue as you will receive many of these small courses to fill you up. I find the quality of the food to be excellent although I would also say the price does not quite justify this kind of price of £40+ per person.

But if anyone is ever in these neck of woods, I highly recommend you bookmark this place and visit. The Eleveden farm estate has such rich history and as soon as you enter the grounds it really feels like it. There's an air of majesty about it that's evident from the off. The lush green lawns, the surrounding white mansions, the fresh country air and the trees that surround the grounds give it a heavenly vibe. The aristocrats of yesteryear who owned the estate over the centuries certainly made their mark. I was also astonished to find that it was originally owned by A Maharaja Runjeet Singh of Lahore. The farm shop and restaurant have only been around for 8 years but are already an established high class brand in their own right. A gorgeous courtyard is surrounded by the restaurant, farm shop and other which I'm certain is packed during the summer. All in all, this was a magical little visit to a hidden treasure in the glorious East England countryside. If you're ever lucky enough to be in these lush neck of woods, highly recommend it.

The city centre is monopolised by Costa, Starbucks and Nero and whilst I don't have as much against them as most people it is nice to find somewhere a bit different. Hence The Vanilla Bean House. It's a bit out of the centre on London Road heading towards Tombland. It's got a fairly large outdoor seating area in the middle of the street, some tall benches in the window and a more comfortable area upstairs, it's really quite tastefully designed and there's usually a copy of The Times or Guardian available. The coffee is good, I've only had lattés so I can't speak for it's pedigree but it tastes as good as Starbucks and when you drink in you get a little crispy straw thing which is a nice touch. There's also a good selection of other drinks, not only Coke and Fanta but also elderflower presse and that ilk. The sandwiches are certainly the best thing about this place. Whilst they may look a bit lacklustre, like something you'd make at home wrapped up like a packed lunch they are really good quality with lots of filling. The prawn and avocado sandwich was on a nice granary bread and they didn't go easy on either the prawns or avocado and I'm guessing they added a bit of Tabasco as it had a good kick to it. It's not cheap, cheap but it's not expensive. You can get a cold drink, packet of crisps and a decent sandwich for under £5 and the coffees are around the usual £1.90-£2.50 mark. Certainly worth a try for a quiet lunch or for people watching in the outside seating.
